The Layover (2017)

Starring: Kate Upton, Alexandra Daddario, Matt Barr Director: William H. Macy Release Date: August 3, 2017 Rating: R Run Time: 1:28 Movie Type: Comedy
Two friends on a road trip compete for the affections of a handsome man when their flight is redirected due to a hurricane.
I’m not going to lie, I watched this movie because I like Matt Barr. Ever since he was Psycho Derek on One Tree Hill, I’ve liked him. He doesn’t come on a lot of things I’m interested in watching so whenever something catches my eye of his, I watch. I’m not quite sure where, to begin with, this movie. It’s about two best friends who need to shake up their lives a bit so they take a trip to Florida to take a time out from their lives. One best friend, Kate, is the more serious of the two and she desperately needs to unwind and live a little while Meg, the other best friend, is more flighty and needs to get away to ground herself so that she can decide what to do with her life. What’s the best way to kick off a girls trip? Bump into a hot guy that you want to bang three ways to Sunday…and if that hot guy happens to be the same guy that your best friend wants to bang her worries away then, of course, a competition for his attention is in order, right? I’ll admit that there were some funny moments in this movie and I did laugh but for the most part, I thought it was dumb. All of the bickering that these two besties went through over one freaking guy? Come on now and some of the things that these two did were downright mean. Meg locked Kate in the grossest gas station bathroom and Kate came out of there drenched in other people’s shit. Seriously, why would you do this to your best friend? Who needs enemies with friends like this? Kate got her digs in too and I spent a huge chunk of the movie wondering how their friendship was going to survive them being so awful to each other and then we get to the end and find out the guy they were fighting over, his story? OMG. I almost stopped watching it by then. I was glad when they finally stopped fighting and started mending their relationship because, in the end, they were a lot stronger together than they were apart so that’s something. I did enjoy the ending portion of the movie and I was low key shipping Kate with the guy that they were fighting over, I think his name was Ryan but not after they get to Florida so the romance lover in me was a bit disappointed on that front. Overall, I just couldn’t like this movie though I thought the acting was great. None of the lines were delivered in a manner where I could tell they were reading from a script, it all felt real if a bit shallow and dumb. So kudos to the actors on that. Would I recommend this? Not really.
