The Weekly Recap (113)

Posted December 3, 2018 by Rowena in Books, Features | 2 Comments

This week was a pretty busy one for me at work, though it was a quiet one at home. I’m spring cleaning the hell out of our office to get it ready for our Christmas party this week. I’ve been getting rid of old electronics that nobody uses, trash that people thought they’d need but haven’t touched in years. It’s been nice to come into a clean office every day and I’m happy with the progress that I’ve made. At home, Brenna and Kenna are busy with basketball. As is Meghan. Meghan’s last first conference game was this past weekend and her team won big so I’m happy for her. She’s playing well and I’m going to miss seeing her play. Bren is still out of commission from playing but after this week, we’re hopeful that she’ll be back on the court all healed up. Kenna is holding it down on the court though, playing well and just smart basketball. I’m glad for her. Caiden went home on Thursday and I miss him something fierce. He’s been busy since he got back home though. His Grandma Blanche and Graunty Delene were in town with him for the weekend so he was enjoying some time with them, they went and got their Christmas tree on Saturday and put it together that night and it looked so pretty. Nicely lit, beautiful decorations and then they went to Church on Sunday and came home to find their beautiful tree knocked over with ornaments all over the place, haha. What poor luck. Bren and Ken FaceTimed them last night and they were putting the house back together after the mess the tree left from falling over. All is well again…and it’ll be well again in L.A. because Caiden will be coming back this weekend with Chloe to go to Disneyland with Chloe and her best friend so that means more Caiden time for us. Yay!! Now, onto the books…

How hard would you fight for the one you love? Taryn Landry was there that awful night fourteen years ago when Long Acre changed from the name of a town to the title of a national tragedy. Everyone knows she lost her younger sister. No one knows it was her fault. Since then, psychology professor Taryn has dedicated her life's work to preventing something like that from ever happening again. Falling in love was never part of the plan...

Shaw Miller has spent more than a decade dealing with the fallout of his brother's horrific actions. After losing everything―his chance at Olympic gold, his family, almost his sanity―he's changed his name, his look, and he's finally starting a new life. As long as he keeps a low profile and his identity secret, everything will be okay, right?

When the world and everyone you know defines you by one catastrophic tragedy...How do you find your happy ending?

I started reading this book last night because it’s back to my review pile for me. I took a short break from it so that I can get some books on my Kindle Unlimited and TBR pile read but December has kicked off and I have hella January review books that need to be read and reviewed so this is the first book off of that pile. So far, this is okay. Not much is going on right now but the hero and the heroine did meet and there’s going to be hella drama, I’m sure since the hero is the brother of the shooter that killed the heroine’s sister. Yikes.

The Weekly Recap (112)

Posted November 26, 2018 by Rowena in Books, Features | 2 Comments

I had a really busy week with family activities, family in town for Thanksgiving, and work obligations but I survived and all is well. We celebrated birthdays (mine included), we played fugitive (which is the most fun I’ve had playing a game in such a long time), there was karaoke, surrey rides, rollerskating and just a whole lot of family togetherness this week and I loved every minute. I’m also completely exhausted and ready to get back to my boring life, haha. Here’s our birthday green wall picture for Ahbrey, myself and my nephew Markus (Caiden’s Dad). I had some alone time with Caiden this week and that was probably the highlight of my week. There’s so many of us that it’s hard to always get to spend time with him because normally, he’s annoyed that everyone was to hug him and hold him and the little guy just wants to be left alone but on Friday night, I was able to hang out with him while everyone else went and did things and it was great. After he played in the bath for the longest time ever, we watched Tarzan and snuggled until everyone came home and he fell asleep. He’ll be here in L.A. until Thursday so I’m glad that I’ll get some more time with the little guy. He’s such a cutie!! Now, onto the books…

By the New York Times bestselling author who “hilariously depicts modern dating” (Us Weekly), My Favorite Half-Night Stand is a laugh-out-loud romp through online dating and its many, many fails.

Millie Morris has always been one of the guys. A UC Santa Barbara professor, she’s a female-serial-killer expert who’s quick with a deflection joke and terrible at getting personal. And she, just like her four best guy friends and fellow professors, is perma-single.

So when a routine university function turns into a black tie gala, Mille and her circle make a pact that they’ll join an online dating service to find plus-ones for the event. There’s only one hitch: after making the pact, Millie and one of the guys, Reid Campbell, secretly spend the sexiest half-night of their lives together, but mutually decide the friendship would be better off strictly platonic.

But online dating isn’t for the faint of heart. While the guys are inundated with quality matches and potential dates, Millie’s first profile attempt garners nothing but dick pics and creepers. Enter “Catherine”—Millie’s fictional profile persona, in whose make-believe shoes she can be more vulnerable than she’s ever been in person. Soon “Catherine” and Reid strike up a digital pen-pal-ship...but Millie can’t resist temptation in real life, either. Soon, Millie will have to face her worst fear—intimacy—or risk losing her best friend, forever.

Perfect for fans of Roxanne and She’s the Man, Christina Lauren’s latest romantic comedy is full of mistaken identities, hijinks, and a classic love story with a modern twist. Funny and fresh, you’ll want to swipe right on My Favorite Half-Night Stand.

I really need to pick up my reading again because I can’t be taking weeks off of regular reading if I’m going to stay on top of my reading goals and review pile. I’m going to pick this book up today and hopefully like it. Wish me luck! 🙂
What I Read
Save the Date by Carrie Aarons | 2 out of 5
I’ve been wanting to read this book for ages now and finally got around to trying out this author last week. This book was a bit of a snoozefest for me. I mean, it does pick up but I didn’t exactly enjoy this book. The heroine pissed me off and so did the hero. The heroine’s reasons for not wanting to get married didn’t make sense, her personality was trash and the hero basically forces the heroine to be his woman. Sure, they’re best friends but ehhh, I just didn’t really enjoy this one. I did like the heroine’s sister and her little storyline. But that’s pretty much it. Meh.

The Weekly Recap (106)

Posted October 8, 2018 by Rowena in Books, Features | 2 Comments

It’s playoff time for baseball and right now, my Dodgers are leading their series against the Atlanta Braves 2-1. We lost last night and play again at 1:30 PM our time today to hopefully shut down the Braves for the rest of the postseason. I’m a giant ball of anxiety right now. I have faith but I’m still scared as all get out. Gah. I went to the game on Friday night with Bren, Ken and my brother Pete. We had the best time, cheered with all of the Dodger fans around us and lost our car in the parking lot. It legit took us about 45 minutes to find our car because we all swore it was somewhere that it wasn’t. You would have thought that we were all drunk but nope. We were all just airheads. LOL. I had zero reception at the stadium so I didn’t get many pictures at all but it was an amazing game and I was living more in the moment than playing on my phone so sorry guys. So Clayton Kershaw (our star pitcher) pitched 8 full innings and when he came out to warm up before the start of the ninth inning, the entire stadium erupted in cheers for him that turned to boo’s when the team manager Dave Roberts came out to wave him into the dugout to make room for our closer, Kenley Jansen but wow, can you imagine if Kershaw pitched all nine innings of a game? That would have been history right there. What a fun game and I don’t care what anyone says, Dodgers fans are nice dammit. Everyone that we sat next to were happy to be there and happy to cheer on our team. There were lots of strangers hugging and high fiving each other after great plays and at bats. I loved the atmosphere. Now, onto the books…

Knox of Iviland, the most ruthless warrior in All War history, has spent his life fighting others to the death, winning new realms for his king. Now the stakes are higher than ever. If he prevails in the battle for Earth, his slave bands will be removed. Victory is his sole focus…until he meets her.

On an arctic getaway with her foster sister, street tough but vulnerable Vale London is shocked to stumble upon a cave filled with ancient gods waging epic combat. When she is inadvertently drawn into their war, she is forced to team up with an unlikely ally—the sexy god who makes her burn with desire.

Though Vale is his enemy, Knox is consumed with lust and a fierce need to protect her. But only one combatant can triumph, and he will have to choose: live for freedom, or die for love.

I’m seriously hoping that this book picks up soon because right now, I’m mostly bored by what’s going on and waiting to feel something for the hero and the heroine. Pray for me.

This week’s book is part of a series that I’m really enjoying right now. It’s the third book in the The Ones that Got Away series by Roni Loren and I cannot wait to read it. It comes out next year and I’m pretty anxious to dig in because the synopsis paints this to be such an interesting one. I can’t imagine falling in love with someone closely related to the person that plays such a huge part in the biggest nightmare of my life. It sounds like all kinds of drama and I’m so here for it. Mark your calendars if you’re interested in this one because it comes out on January 1, 2019 and if it’s as good as the other books in this series, then we’re in for a treat. You can read my reviews for the first two books here, The Ones that Got Away and The One You Can’t Forget.

The Weekly Recap (105)

Posted October 1, 2018 by Rowena in Books, Features | 2 Comments

Happy first day of October, everyone! Can you believe that there are only three more months left in the year 2018? On one hand, I’m ready to say goodbye to this messed up year but on the other hand, I’m not ready for a new year. Not yet anyway. Maybe I’ll be ready in December. Fingers crossed. Anyway, this last week was for celebrating baby Jax’s first birthday. It was also for celebrating my North High Saxons defeating Jax’s Grandpa’s Torrance High Tartars. Haha. So as you can see, it was a damn good day in my North High household. Haha, it gave us loads to discuss at Jax’s birthday party. 🙂 Jax’s birthday party was adorable. It was a Lumberjack party theme and Jax was dressed up as Lumberjax. It was too cute! Brenna and Makenna also had their first pre-season tournament for their school basketball team in Ventura and that is about an hour away from us, I wasn’t feeling good so my brother Pete went to support them. Their team isn’t that good this year but Makenna’s Mom said they’re not as bad as we were thinking. Pete told them that depending on how well they play, will determine where they ate afterward, when he texted me during the game, he said, “It’s looking like we’re eating at McDonalds” so they sucked right alongside their teammates. SMH. It’s just pre-season so hopefully, they’ll get better. Speaking of pre-season, NBA BASKETALL is back which means that Lebron James played in his first game as a Laker and I was super stoked about that. We lost to the dratted Denver Nuggets but I saw a lot of good stuff from our team so I’m hopeful that they’ll iron out all of the kinks soon and that we’ll be a true contending team soon. Fingers crossed. Today at 1pm, I’ll be glued to my work TV watching as my Dodgers battle the Colorado Rockies (boo!) for the National League Division title. I’m sending all of my good vibes to our boys in blue, especially Walker Buehller who will be pitching today. I hope our bats show up. GO BLUE! Now, onto the books…

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh continues her Hard Play series with a sweet, sexy romance featuring big, fat, OTT weddings, a meddling grandma, and a too-serious hero who needs to be unbuttoned…

Nayna Sharma agreed to an arranged marriage in the hope it would heal the fractures in her beloved family… only to realize too late that a traditional marriage is her personal nightmare. Panicked, she throws caution to the winds, puts on the tiniest dress she can find, and ends up in the arms of a tall, rough-edged hunk of a man who has abs of steel—and who she manages to mortally insult between one kiss and the next.

Abandoned as a child, then adopted into a loving family, Raj Sen believes in tradition, in continuity. Some might call him stiff and old-fashioned, but he knows what he wants—and it’s a life defined by rules… yet he can’t stop thinking about the infuriating and sexy woman who kissed him in the moonlight then disappeared. When his parents spring an introduction on him, the last woman he expects is her. Beautiful. Maddening. A rulebreaker in the making.

He’s all wrong for her. She’s all wrong for him. And love is about to make rebels of them both.

I started this book on Friday but never actually got any reading done since I’m still on Chapter 2 and it’s Monday. I didn’t read at all this weekend but I’m hoping to get some reading in today and knock this one out. Wish me luck!

My favorite read of the week goes to Never Love a Highlander by Maya Banks because hot damn, that was a damn good book. I adored grumpy ass Caelen and Rionna. They were a perfect match for each other. I didn’t have a least favorite read of the week. I enjoyed all of the books that I read.
