Eye Candy Friday: Garrett Daniel from Getting Schooled by Emma Chase

Posted January 18, 2019 by Rowena in Books, Features | 14 Comments

As I mentioned last week, I’m making certain changes (or returning to my older ways) to the features that I want to track and do each week. Going back to Eye Candy Friday instead of Book Boyfriends will let me feature other boyfriends that I’m loving and wanting to spotlight right now. So this is the first of those posts. I promise, no more changing. This is it! Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Head of the class...

Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out.

The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and "cool" teacher in the hometown where he's not just a golden boy—he's platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle.

Then...Callie Carpenter comes home.

And knocks him right on his tight end zone.

Back to school...

Callie has a pretty sweet life herself...on the other side of the country. But circumstances—that she'd prefer to never speak of again—have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school.

Now she's facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore...and that's just the teachers.

Just like old times...

When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance—and then has to stop herself from jumping him.

Good friends are all they can ever be.

Or...these teachers just might end up getting schooled—hard—by love.

Today’s boyfriend is Garrett Daniels from Emma Chase’s Getting Schooled, the first book in her Getting Some series. Garrett Daniels is a high school football coach, who is teaching and coaching at his old high school and living his best life. He’s considered the best thing since sliced bread in his hometown and has created a pretty decent life for himself there. He’s happy, or at least as happy as he lets himself be until the one that got away, comes back home…and shakes up his life.

Garrett has a lot of Coach Taylor from Friday Night Lights qualities to him and I freaking loved the hell out of him. I loved seeing him as a coach, a teacher and then as a man falling in love again with the girl that left him behind to chase her dreams.

There wasn’t a complicated past or even anything super extra about Garrett. He was just a regular man who lived his life the way that he wanted, did what he thought was right and did right by those he loved and cared about. Callie, the girl that broke his heart, was included in that…even after all of these years.

Here are some quotes from Garrett’s book that showcase just why I adored him so much. It’ll paint a better picture of just how awesome Garrett is.

“You were always my girl, Callie. Even after you weren’t anymore.”

“I have feelings for him. I always have … But these aren’t just leftover echoes of a sweet first love. This is something new. A throbbing, breathless attraction to the amazing man he’s become. I want to be near him, to know him, inside and out all over again.

And he feels the same way. Garret wants this version of me as much as he always did. Maybe even more.”

“What is this to you? What are we doing? What do you want?”

Garrett smiles that easy smile that makes me want to lick every single inch of his skin.

“This is you and me. The reboot. We’ll talk and laugh and fuck until we can’t move, and probably fight at some point, too. And we’ll… be.”

I reach for him. He releases my arms and rolls us to the side, my hands around his neck, my leg draped across his hip.

“As for what I want. I want you, Callie. For as long as you’re here. For as long as you’ll let me have you. I want all of you.”

"Passion, pleasure, and princely responsibilities make this sexy fairy tale a real page turner." —Audrey Carlan, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Calendar Girl

Nicholas Arthur Frederick Edward Pembrook, Crowned Prince of Wessco, aka “His Royal Hotness,” is wickedly charming, devastatingly handsome, and unabashedly arrogant―hard not to be when people are constantly bowing down to you.

Then, one snowy night in Manhattan, the prince meets a dark haired beauty who doesn’t bow down. Instead, she throws a pie in his face.

Nicholas wants to find out if she tastes as good as her pie, and this heir apparent is used to getting what he wants.

Dating a prince isn’t what waitress Olivia Hammond ever imagined it would be. There’s a disapproving queen, a wildly inappropriate spare heir, relentless paparazzi, and brutal public scrutiny. While they’ve traded in horse drawn carriages for Rolls Royces and haven’t chopped anyone’s head off lately―the royals are far from accepting of this commoner.

But to Olivia―Nicholas is worth it.

Nicholas grew up with the whole world watching, and now Marriage Watch is in full force. In the end, Nicholas has to decide who he is and, more importantly, who he wants to be: a King... or the man who gets to love Olivia forever.

Rowena: Our August buddy read is Royally Screwed by Emma Chase and it’s a book that both of us have been eager to read. I’ve been meaning to read this book for ages and was super glad when Ames agreed to buddy review it with me.

Prince Nicholas Pembrook is used to living his life for his country. He’s the heir to the throne and his life is dedicated to serving his country and performing duty after duty because that’s what a Prince does. Princes do not complain about their duty. They don’t conduct their lives in a way that would embarrass the crown so when Nicholas’ grandmother, the Queen, tells him that it’s time for him to pick a wife, Nicholas isn’t happy but knows that he will be getting married at the end of summer.

When Nicholas is sent to New York to bring his rowdy younger brother home, on top of performing some duties for the crown, Nicholas is not at all happy. He’s got no time for chasing his brother around to bring him to heel but a Prince does what a Prince has to do. When he meets Olivia Hammond, his plans for the future are thrown into madness.

With his duty to marry coming right around the corner, how is he going to walk away from Olivia for good?

Alright, Ames…what did you think of this book? Thumbs up or down?

Ames: I have to give Royally Screwed a thumbs up! At first, I didn’t like Nicholas. The way he thought about women at the beginning of the story gave me pause. And he was definitely an ass. LOL But Olivia was someone who didn’t have time for his crap and she definitely gave it to him straight. I really ended up enjoying their story.

What did you think?

Rowena: Same. I really enjoyed this one. Asshole hero and all. I gave him a bit of a slide since he’s a Prince and that just seems like the way that a Prince would act so his redemption arc over the course of the book worked for me.

Olivia was a great heroine. Strong, smart and caring. The way that she lived her life to make sure that her family was taken care of after her mother passed away, that shows a strong personality who did whatever it took to take care of her loved ones. She didn’t pretend to be anything that she wasn’t and I loved that it didn’t change when Nicholas came into her life. It’s so easy to fall in with your new rich boyfriend and take, take, take but Olivia wasn’t like that.

What did you think about the romance?

I really enjoyed their romance. It was fun and it was passionate. They banged like a bunch of rabbits and I can’t even blame her. My legs probably would have stayed open for Nicholas too. LMAO!

Ames: I agree about Olivia. She took care of her family and she was compassionate but strong willed as well. I like how she saw the real Nicholas under all his public persona/royalty crap that he had to deal with.

Nicholas did grow on me too. Yes, he was a jerk at the beginning but he really came to care about Olivia. I like how open he and Olivia were together. And he was really all about duty and responsibility so I like that Olivia gave him some fun times too. Despite the short time frame for their relationship to develop, I believed in it.

HOWEVER, I predicted what Nicholas was going to do in the end. I was happy that he did it but I could see it coming. LOL

I liked the range of characters we were introduced to as well. I liked Nicholas’ younger brother, his bodyguards and Olivia’s sister. Even the little dog was a hoot with the way it was described.

What did you think of the Queen? I liked her! Even though she was laying down the law for Nicholas, I could see where she was coming from.

Rowena: I’m really looking forward to continuing this series with Henry and then Logan’s book. I liked their characters and want more of them. I already know that I’m going to love Henry’s heroine because she’s a book nerd just like us and in my head? Henry is Prince Harry and umm…YUM! I haven’t figured out yet who will be Logan in my head but I’m sure it’ll be someone fantastic.

As for the Queen. I did like her. I loved seeing how important her duty to their country is and how she instilled that in the boys and was trying her damnedest to get them to take their duties seriously. I loved that she traded quips with both boys and that it was apparent that she loved them as a grandmother is supposed to love them and she wasn’t this ice queen who cared only about the crown. They weren’t just Princes to her, they were her grandsons and I loved their royal family. I can’t wait to see her be all up in Henry’s business in the next book.

Do you know if this is a three book series or will there be more? I’m really happy about Ellie and Logan getting together. Yippy skippy…what about you?

Ames: I have no idea if there are further books planned in the series. But I thought of Prince Harry as well! Especially with the antics, the fictional Henry was getting up to. LOL!

I’m more looking forward to Logan’s book – that plot is my catnip.

Overall, I really enjoyed Royally Screwed. I’m glad I stuck with it past the hero’s antics at the beginning. I liked the cast of characters the author introduced us to. This wasn’t a superficial love story. I like how both characters grew and were better people when they were together. Besides a minor complaint about the predictability at the end, I have no problems recommending this book. Any complaints, Ween?

Rowena: I hear you about Logan’s book. My friend Tasha just finished reading it and she loved it so I’m looking forward to that one too. Gah. So much goodness to look forward to. Emma Chase is such a great author for the male POV. She does it so well and I thought she did it well with Nicholas.

I really enjoyed it and don’t have any complaints. My complaints had more to do with both Olivia and Nicholas taking turns getting on my nerves but in the end, I loved the hell out of both of them so I wouldn’t have any trouble recommending this book to anyone looking for a good, royal read. I’m giving this book a 4 out of 5, you?

Ames: Emma Chase does do a great job of writing from the male POV!

Royally Screwed gets a 4 out of 5 from me as well. I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the next one.
