Iron Man (2008) Starring: Robert Downing Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, Leslie Bibb, Clark Gregg Director: Jon Favreau Release Date: 2 May 2008 Rating: PG-13 Run Time: 2:06 Movie Type: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Tony Stark. Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. Son of legendary inventor and weapons contractor Howard Stark. When Tony Stark is assigned to give a weapons presentation to an Iraqi unit led by Lt. Col. James Rhodes, he’s given a ride on enemy lines. That ride ends badly when Stark’s Humvee that he’s riding in is attacked by enemy combatants. He survives – barely – with a chest full of shrapnel and a car battery attached to his heart. In order to survive, he comes up with a way to miniaturize the battery and figures out that the battery can power something else. Thus Iron Man is born. He uses the primitive device to escape from the cave in Iraq. Once back home, he then begins work on perfecting the Iron Man suit. But the man who was put in charge of Stark Industries has plans of his own to take over Tony’s technology for other matters.
It’s been years since I’ve watched this movie so because I couldn’t remember a damn thing about it, I re-watched it to kick start my Marvel Movies Project and while I enjoyed it, the Iron Man portion of the Marvel movies will never be my favorite. The movie starts off with Tony Stark living it up and not having a care in the world. He’s a rich party boy who cares only about what’s in front of him and not much else. He’s also a genius that makes high power military grade weapons and sells them so he’s got fans but he’s also got haters. Things take a turn for Tony when he’s getting ready to speak at a weapons presentation and he’s attacked and wakes up in enemy lands with a car battery attached to his heart. Seriously. This is probably only the second time that I’ve watched this movie and I’ve got to say that I enjoyed the movie a lot more this time around than I did the first time. Tony Stark and Pepper Potts were a lot more fun this time around and seeing Tony trying to do right by everyone was so rewarding when he finally got into that Iron Man suit and started doing what he was meant to be doing. The actual story for Iron Man isn’t that original but Robert Downing Jr. did the role justice. He was the perfect Tony Stark and his humor brought a lot of enjoyment to my viewing of this one. I enjoyed the slight romance between him and Pepper and I enjoyed seeing him take the bad guys down so I’m glad that I went back and watched this one. I liked this movie fine but I just like the other movies more. Now, I’m even more excited to watch the rest of the movies.

Movie Review: Black Panther

Posted March 29, 2018 by Rowena in Reviews | 0 Comments

Black Panther (2018) Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o Director: Ryan Coogler Release Date: 16 February 2018 Rating: PG-13 Run Time: 2:14 Movie Type: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.
I’m not going to lie, Michael B. Jordan is the main reason that I went to see this movie. I love that guy and have since he played Vince on Friday Night Lights, so I try to support anything that he comes out with and so I planned to watch this movie with my daughter Brenna. So the week that this movie came out, I went with Brenna, my 15-year-old nephew Chase and my 8-year-old nephew Luke. Chase, Brenna and I didn’t know much about Black Panther, what the movie was about but it was getting a lot of hype so we were game for whatever. At the theater, we sat in this order: Brenna, Luke, Me, Chase. In the beginning of the movie, Brenna was confused on who was who and what was happening and she didn’t know how to ask me without bothering Luke, who was all into the movie. So there we are, watching the movie and Brenna is trying to get my attention. She wants to ask me questions about what is going on. Taking pity on her, Luke leans over and begins to fill her in. This is what I hear of their whispered conversation:
Luke: “You see that guy? He’s Black Panther. He’s the main character and the protector of Wakanda. There’s where he lives and the boy you and your Mom like? He’s gonna find out who he really is and he’s gonna turn bad.” Brenna: “Oh, how do you know this?” Luke: “Because I like this stuff!”
Ha! I will say that by the end of the movie, our whole group was lit. The movie was fantastic. The story, the characters, there wasn’t a part of the movie that we didn’t love. Killmonger’s story low key broke my heart because, goodness, had he known the truth or if anyone had come back for him, how different would his life have been? Gah, still…this movie was so freaking good. The acting was phenomenal, the casting was oustanding and the story itself was well written. There’s much to recommend this movie and if you haven’t seen it yet, fix that pronto because this is the best movie that I’ve seen in a while. Can I also mention the perfection that is Lupita Nyongo’s skin? I remember whispering my awww at how flawless her skin was and Lukey responded next to me, “I know, right? She has no pimples!” Haha, I seriously love that kid.
