Throwback Thursday (23)

Posted November 2, 2017 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

When Mormon kids are in high school, they attend early morning bible and BOM study that we call Seminary. It’s a pretty big deal because if you wanted to go out with your friends on the weekend, you better not miss any days of Seminary or you can count your weekend plans out. At least that’s how it was when I was growing up and it was the same deal with Brenna. It’s especially hard to want to go to Seminary because class starts every morning at 5:55AM and lets out at 6:45AM. What teenager do you know that wants to get up that early every morning to read the scriptures?

Brenna graduated from high school this past year and I was cleaning out my emails when I came across an old email from her Seminary teacher. Here’s what it said.

Hi parents. I have a couple of quick questions for you that will help with our lesson tomorrow. Is there a specific meaning to your child’s name? And, was there a specific reason you chose your child’s name?

So, of course, I had to forward that email to all of my friends and my sisters while I pondered how I was going to tell Brenna’s Seminary teacher that Brenna was named after a heroine in one of my romance novels.

The heroine from this book in particular:

The Wedding (Laird’s Fiancee’s #2) by Julie Garwood

It’s a classic plot: a marriage of convenience that lays the groundwork for true love.

1119. Journeying from England to Scotland to wed a highlander, Lady Brenna had resigned herself to the arranged match. But when a band of fierce, painted warriors captured her en route, she fearlessly met their demand to marry their leader — the quick-tempered laird Connor MacAlister. She couldn’t know that her capture was merely the first act of vengeance against her betrothed, Connor’s sworn enemy.

Brenna harbored no illusions that her husband was in love with her; after a hasty forest wedding, MacAlister assured her she could return home once she had borne him a son. But she could not deny that she had once proposed to MacAlister — ten years ago, when she was just a child, and the visitor to her father’s castle charmed her with his dazzling, unexpected smile. Now, as she sets out to win the brave chieftain whom she has come to adore, a legacy of revenge ensnares Brenna in a furious clan war — and only her faith in her gallant hero can save her….

Hahaha, can you imagine what was going through Brenna’s Seminary teacher’s head as I told her that I named my daughter after a girl in one of my smutty romance novels?

The exact romance where my most memorable scene is this one:

She let him know how much she liked what he was doing by scoring his back with her nails and crying out with pleasure.

“Oh, God.”

“Nay, lass. Connor.”

Hahahaha, I had a good laugh at that. Oh, the good ol’ days.

Monthly Recap: June & July 2017

Posted August 23, 2017 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

I have been sorely lacking in getting any posts written for this blog. I’ve been busy, lazy, not in the mood…you name it, I was it. I’m slowly starting to get back in the thick of things so wish me luck. I missed my June monthly recap so I’ll just add the jist of things here. It’s not like I have much to report, book wise for June anyway.

What I Did

Bren, Ken, & Cher graduated from High School and Makaela was promoted from middle school to High School. Bren and Ken will be attending our local junior college while Cher leaves for Utah this coming Friday to start her freshman year of college at BYU, Provo. Makaela has joined the North High Volleyball team and I’m sure she’s going to do great things.

We met Lakers rookie Kyle Kuzma in Las Vegas. In July, we traveled to Las Vegas for the girls last Club tournament with the Mustangs. It was hot as hell and the girls played game after game after game and on our first night of games, we had dinner at Raising Caines and one of the newest Lakers ate right next to us so of course we welcomed him to Los Angeles and got a picture with him. Fun times!

Graduations, Vegas & Future Planning

Posted July 13, 2017 by Rowena in Personal | 0 Comments

As of June 21st, my kid is a high school graduate.

It’s so weird to have registered for her college classes for the fall and to be dealing with grown folks business where she’s concerned because she’s my baby and yet this week, we’ve knocked out some pretty big things to get her ready for school next month. She’s off to Colorado for a few weeks to live it up until she has to come back home and buckle down. She’s got plans and I’m glad to see that she’s taking her future a lot more serious than I did when I was her age. Her to-do list is a mile long but she’s making it work. I’m doing a lot of hand-holding but I don’t mind because this is all new to her.

Her graduation was nice, short and simple with not a lot of speakers that spoke for days and it kicked off with her Principal being a complete savage, making me laugh. He opened up the ceremony with, “For those of you who brought big balloons after we told you not to, tuck them in and keep them out of the way.” LOL!

There was a good turnout, as always and I’m fortunate to have such a great family surrounding Brenna with such love and support, no matter how long we go without seeing each other. It’s always love when we’re together.

Here’s a bunch of pictures from Bren’s graduation…

My Graduate

Team Wilson Gang

Bren, Me and Brenna’s boyfriend RJ

My biggest headaches J Hong, Bren and Yusei (missing Kenna)

So Cal Mustangs Crew

The cutest little girls, Logan, Genna and Hunter

Brenna, all lei’d up

On top of Brenna’s graduation, we had her cousins Kenna’s graduation from Redondo Union and her other cousin Makaela’s 8th grade promotion. So we were hecka busy making candy lei’s and trying not to lose any kids…ha! We did eat lots of tacos that week.

This past weekend, we played in our final club team basketball tournament and while I was thrilled that we went undefeated in the tournament, a small part of me found the whole thing bittersweet because I didn’t want the weekend to end. The end of the weekend meant that we played in our last tournament as Mustangs. I’m still low key sad over that.

Here are some pictures from our mini vacation for basketball purposes:

Ran into Lakers Rookie Kyle Kuzma at dinner on Friday night. Here’s the girls picture with him.

Kainoa wanted in on this action so here’s his picture with Mr. Kuzma, who was in Vegas playing in the NBA Summer League

Ran into some family in Vegas right after Kuzma left. Here we are with Jacob!

Right before the Colorado crew went home after spending two weeks in California with us

Turn up picture!

Our last team picture together before everyone goes off to college. We finished out strong as only Mustangs can.

I’m going to miss this team. Brenna played for the same club since she first started playing basketball seriously. Only 5 girls from our original team played in this tournament but we’re planning on getting together one last time before the girls head off in different directions in the fall. Our coach was emotional at our team dinner Saturday night at the M Buffet (so good but so expensive) and it was just a lot of fun reminiscing over days long gone. Remembering games and players and practices and seeing the girls laugh and have fun playing the game they chose to play as kids. A lot of the girls had issues during their time playing for their high schools and this tournament was a reminder tournament for them. A tournament that gave them back the love of the game that was missing in the last four years, playing for different schools and different coaches.

It was so good to see Brenna having fun playing basketball with her friends again. It was great to visit with old friends and chat with them over our kids future. Of the bunch that came to Vegas, only 3 are playing basketball in college. Some are going out of state to universities, some are going to state schools and hoping to walk on at their schools while some are staying home, attending the community college with plans to transfer. Brenna’s plans include playing basketball at the community college and then serving a mission when she turns 19.

Ugh, I’m so freaking old.

Week in Review (58)

Posted June 5, 2017 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

If you’re visiting today, you’ll see that things look a little different around here. I needed a change and thought that changing the blog look up a bit was the way to go so I did it. I’m happy with it so it’ll stick for the next little while.

This week was for prom prepping and CIF Championship softball games and hanging with my besties in Temecula, at the prettiest wineries that I’ve ever been to. I’m so glad that I made the drive out (it’s an hour and a half drive for me) to see my Book Binge gals, Casee and Holly because the last time we were all together in the same place was back in 2005. That’s more than 10 years. Sheesh. Still, we came together like no time has passed and we laughed the day away and enjoyed eachother’s company. So much fun!

What I’m Currently Reading

Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Dear Reader,

Being trapped in a bedroom with a woman is a grand thing. Being trapped in hundreds of bedrooms over two thousand years isn’t. And being cursed into a book as a love-slave for eternity can ruin even a Spartan warrior’s day.

As a love-slave, I know everything about women. How to touch them, how to savor them, and most of all, how to pleasure them. But when I was summoned to fulfill Grace Alexander’s sexual fantasies, I found the first woman in history who saw me as a man with a tormented past. She alone bothered to take me out of the bedroom and onto the world. She taught me to love again.

But I was not born to love. I was cursed to walk eternity alone. As a general, I had long ago accepted my sentence. Yet now I have found Grace–the one thing my wounded heart cannot survive without. Sure, love can heal all wounds, but can it break a two-thousand-year-old curse?

Julian of Macedon

My book club is reading this sexy book for our June discussion and it’s been so long since I’ve read this book that it’s reading like a first time read. I forgot how sexy Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters series is and how compelling the world was. I also forgot the synopsis of this book and reading it again, a lot older than I was the first time I read it, it’s a different experience and one that I’m not yet sure how I feel. I’m not mad but I’m not much of anything else right now either. We’ll see how it pans out. I should be done with this book by tomorrow but haha, I’m having fun reaquainting myself with Julian of Macedonia…haha.

What I Read

Revenge by Lexi Blake | 4.25 out of 5
Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh (Re-read) | 4.5 out of 5
The Impossible Vastness of Us by Samantha Young | 4 out of 5
The Day of the Duchess by Sarah MacLean | 5 out of 5

My favorite read of the week is hands down The Day of the Duchess by Sarah MacLean. Holy smokes that book was good. So stinkin’ good. Gah. I can’t even put into words how much that book wrecked me. *sigh* Malcolm was everything and going into this book, I never would have said that. Sarah MacLean’s redeem game is strong.

I liked all of the books that I read so I’m not going to pick a least favorite. 🙂

Book Boyfriend of the Week

Marcus Bevingstoke, Duke of Haven from The Day of the Duchess by Sarah MacLean

I honestly thought that this week’s book boyfriend would go to Drew Lawless from Revenge by Lexi Blake. I adored the hell out of him and loved the fierceness with which he loved his family and his heroine, Shelby but then I read The Day of the Duchess and was reunited with the punk ass dick head who broke Sera’s heart from A Rogue Less Taken and holy cow, I wasn’t prepared for Marcus. I wasn’t prepared for his story, for his history and for his reasons for acting the way that he did but most importantly, I wasn’t prepared for the scene at the end when everything comes to a head. I wasn’t prepared for all of the tears that I shed for him, for his love for Sera and for the sorrow he felt at their past. OMG, I’m tearing up again. Well done, Sarah MacLean. Well freaking done.

What I Watched on TV

I’ve been watching random episodes of Friends before bed and cracking up every single time. Brenna has taken to watching episodes with me and she had no idea that it was such a funny show. Before she had no interest but I’m glad to see that’s changing. I love and miss these guys!

What Movies I Watched

John Wick (2014) | 4 out of 5
The Art of Us (2017) | DNF

I watched John Wick again with my nephew Chance. Don’t mess with John’s dog. 🙂

I think I’m all burnt out on Hallmark movies because the last couple of movies I watched, I didn’t finish because I was bored. The guy in The Art of Us is hot stuff but even he couldn’t save my interest while watching that movie.

Week in Review (57)

Posted May 30, 2017 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

This post is coming to you guys a little late because I’ve been wrapped up in a bunch of things lately.

I disappeared for a week because I was in a car accident last week Friday and this jerk ran into my car and tried to say that I was 30% at fault. Ummm, the front of his car hit the back of mine and he was turning right from the outside lane (he had to pass me to get into the parking lot on the other side of my car). I was going straight in the inside lane. How the hell he thought I had any blame in that accident is beyond me. So I’ve been in car insurance hell for the last week. I didn’t read a lot because I was dealing with that nonsense.

Aside from that, I’ve been prom dress shopping and witnessing the cutest promposal ever. Brenna’s boyfriend sent her 13 little notes, giving her reasons why he wanted to go to prom with her then he showed up at our house with a huge sign that said THIRTEEN REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD GO TO PROM WITH ME? Lots of thought and preparation went into the promposal and I thought it was adorable. She picked a good one, my kid and I’m thrilled for her.

Here’s what the poster looked like and my brother’s thoughts on the whole thing (haha):

My only gripe with the whole thing was that he waited until 10:50PM to do it but still, it was cute and Brenna was happy so I let the lateness of his promposal slide. LOL.

Anyway, on with the post…

Always and Forever, Lara Jean (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before #3) by Jenny Han

Lara Jean’s letter-writing days aren’t over in this surprise follow-up to the New York Times bestselling To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and P.S. I Still Love You.

Lara Jean is having the best senior year a girl could ever hope for. She is head over heels in love with her boyfriend, Peter; her dad’s finally getting remarried to their next door neighbor, Ms. Rothschild; and Margot’s coming home for the summer just in time for the wedding.

But change is looming on the horizon. And while Lara Jean is having fun and keeping busy helping plan her father’s wedding, she can’t ignore the big life decisions she has to make. Most pressingly, where she wants to go to college and what that means for her relationship with Peter. She watched her sister Margot go through these growing pains. Now Lara Jean’s the one who’ll be graduating high school and leaving for college and leaving her family—and possibly the boy she loves—behind.

When your heart and your head are saying two different things, which one should you listen to?

I’ve been pretty anxious to read this book because I loved the first two books in this series. Lara Jean did a lot of growing up in this series and I’m pretty stoked to finish out her story. I can’t wait to see where her and Peter are these days and what her plans for the future are. I also want to see what her peeps are up to these days. I have a lot of catching up to do with this one so I’ll be digging into it today.

I’ve been hearing good things about this book so that makes me happy.
