The Wednesday Five: Squad Goals

Posted December 14, 2022 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

I’m a list person. I have a list for every single thing in my life from a to-do list, a list of books that I want to read, a running shopping list, and in the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing different k-entertainment lists that I’ve been keeping track of. You’ll be seeing my top 5 lists of stuff like my current celebrity crushes, my favorite k-drama female protagonists, my favorite k-drama male protagonists, my to-be-watched k-dramas, and you know, stuff like that.

This week’s Wednesday Five will feature my favorite friendships, or squad goals. These are my favorite friendship circles from all of the k-dramas that I’ve watched up to date. I laughed, I cried, I happy sighed, with each of these squads and I just adored their dynamic, their love for each other and just them. Period.

1. Reply 1988

Where to Watch: Netflix
Starring: Park Bo Gum, Lee Hyeri, Ryu Joon Yeol

These five are at the very top of my favorite squad goals list. They were everything. Their friendship was crazy and it was fun but they were also very loyal to one another. The way that two of the boys were in love with the one girl in the group and were considerate of each other warmed my heart but I also loved just how silly they were with each other. The way that they looked forward to Taek winning his tournaments so he would buy them all food, the way that they all took turns teaching Taek bad words, how to be a normal kid, and the way that they reacted to each other (especially when they found out that Sun Woo was dating Deok Sun’s sister, haha) and just…everything. These guys were everything.

2. Twenty Five, Twenty One

Where to Watch: Netflix
Starring: Nam Joo Hyuk, Kim Tae Ri, Choi Hyun Wook

These guys were another fantastic friend group. I loved how supportive they were of each other, even when it was hard for them to do so. Hee Do and Yurim’s friendship came a long way but once they became friends, they were tight as hell and I really liked their friendship. Each of them had their own relationship with each other but I really liked the scenes in which they were all together. I mean, it’s hard to top the friendship between Ji Woong and Seung Wan but I thought their collective friendship between the five of them was pretty special and I really enjoyed seeing them.

3. Dear My Friends

Where to Watch: Netflix
Starring: Kim Hye Ja, Na Moon Hee, Go Doo Shim

I watched this show and couldn’t help but hope that my own squad would be just as tight as this squad was in this drama. They were damn near 80 years old, still getting in trouble but close as ever. I loved how they kept showing up for each other, even when it meant that they would get in trouble from kids. I know that I’m going to be giving Brenna fits when I’m older and I’m low key excited about that. I adored the friendship between all of these old ladies, so much so that I want that for myself.

4. Fight for My Way

Where to Watch: Viki
Starring: Park Seo Joon, Kim Ji Won, Ahn Jae Hong

These four were a lot of fun. They were also extremely loyal to each other even through the downs of a couple going through it. I loved how they each knew their place in the friendship and the girls stuck with the girls while the boys did the same. I also loved how supportive they were of each other. Love, love, love these guys!

5. Crash Landing On You

Where to Watch: Netflix
Starring: Hyun Bin, Son Ye Jin, Seo Ji Hye

This squad holds a special place in my heart. I love how loyal they were to their boss and how that loyalty extended to his lady love. These guys were such a joy to watch and seeing them struggle, stumble, and then get back up to try again had me super happy. Adored these guys.

What are some of your favorite k-drama squad goals?

The Wednesday Five: K-Drama Male Besties

Posted November 16, 2022 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

I’m a list person. I have a list for every single thing in my life from a to-do list, a list of books that I want to read, a running shopping list, and in the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing different k-entertainment lists that I’ve been keeping track of. You’ll be seeing my top 5 lists of stuff like my current celebrity crushes, my favorite k-drama female protagonists, my favorite k-drama male protagonists, my to-be-watched k-dramas, and you know, stuff like that.

This week’s Wednesday Five will feature the five k-drama male characters that I want to be besties with. These are male characters that will round up my bestie squad quite nicely, I think.

1. Jo Eun Seob from The King: Eternal Monarch

I can’t remember much about this drama, which sucks because it’s a Kim Go Eun drama but you know what I do remember? Jo Eun Seob. I remember how much I loved him. In every single scene, he was such a delight. No matter which world he was in, he stole the show. Every single time. I would have the best time with him. We would laugh so much and I know that he would have my back no matter what cause he was loyal to the soil. He’d make a great bestie and I would never forget to tell him how handsome he is, haha.

2. Ryu Dong Ryong from Reply 1988

Life would be so much fun with Ryu Dong Ryong as your best friend. He’s one of the funniest characters I’ve ever watched but more than how silly he is, there were moments in Reply 1988 where he was also very insightful and gave some of the best advice to his friends. He was loyal and an all around fun character so why wouldn’t I want to be his best friend? He can also sing the hell out of Stevie Wonder’s I Just Called to Say I Love You.

3. Kim Ju Meok from Crash Landing On You

Kim Ju Meok from Crash Landing on You is me. We would be such great friends. We already have so much in common. We love South Korean dramas and we rope everything in our lives to a Korean Drama plot point and when he meets his K-Drama favorite actress?? I about died because he is all of us. I want to be his bestie because we’d spend our days eating jjajangmyeon, watching k-dramas and spinning wild conspiracy theories about our favorite dramas. It would be great!

4. Lee Sang Sik from Gaus Electronics

This guy is a riot. He’s also extremely unlucky and I want to befriend his ol’ goofy ass all the same. He’s such an optimistic person, and the way that he kept pissing everyone at the office off with his personality and the way that he’s a bit of an airhead would round out my friendship circle for the better. I would love to tease him about his love story with Cha Na Rae and it would be a whole lot of fun to hang out with him, Na Rae, and Aziz.

5. Woo Gwang Nam from Love in Contract

Gwang Nam’s a great best friend to Sang Eun that I know that we would be great besties as well. I’m pretty mean in real life so I would slay all of his dragons for him while he beats everyone up for me because he’s a jiu jitsu teacher. Everyone needs a champion in their lives just like Gwang Nam. I would slay all of his dragons because he is precious. So yeah, we need to be besties.

Who are some male k-drama characters that you want to be besties with?

Eye Candy Friday: Ri Jung Hyuk

Posted October 16, 2020 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

Eye Candy Friday is something that I’ve been doing since I first started my personal blog way back in 2003. That first personal blog is long gone but I’ve never really grown out of the eye candy phase. I’m always up for some eye candy. Whether it’s a character from a book (male or female, I don’t discriminate), a character from a movie or TV Show, if I loved them and want to gush about how much I loved them, you’ll find them here. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

This week, I’m featuring Hyun Bin as Ri Jung Hyuk in the Korean drama, Crash Landing on You. Man, here’s another example of that get you a man that loves you the way that Ri Jung Hyuk loved him some Yoon Se Ri. She literally crash-landed on him while paragliding. She went up in the air in South Korea, got caught up in a hurricane thing and landed on Ri Jung Hyuk in North Korea. LOL, only in K-Dramas.

I fell head over heels in love with Ri over the course of the show because he really did try everything under the sun to sneak Se Ri back into South Korea. He hid her in his house, protected her from his nosy neighbors and got shot trying to protect her from those that wanted to harm her. He also searched for her when she got lost at the market and I cried during that scene. There are many reasons to love Ri Jung Hyuk and that’s why he’s this week’s Eye Candy Friday. It didn’t hurt at all that he was very easy on the eyes, as you can see from the pictures above. Haha, Happy Friday!

Until next week…enjoy!

Review: Crash Landing on You

Crash Landing on You

Male Lead: Hyun Bin
Female Lead: Son Ye Jin
Secondary Lead: Seo Ji Hye, Jung Kyung Ho
Also Starring: Kim Soo Hyun, Lee Shin Young, Choi Ji Woo, Yang Kyung Won, Yoo Soo Bin, Tang Joon Sang, Kim Yeong Min
Year Released: 2019
Genre: Contemporary, Fantasy, Romance
Country: Korea
Where I Watched It: Netflix
Recommended By: Nobody

Yoon Se-Ri (Son Ye-Jin) is an heiress to a conglomerate in South Korea. One day, while paragliding, an accident caused by strong winds leads Yoon Se-Ri to make an emergency landing in North Korea. There, she meets Ri Jeong-Hyeok (Hyun-Bin), who is a North Korean army officer. He tries to protect her and hide her. Soon, Ri Jeong-Hyeok falls in love with Yoon Se-Ri.

Crash Landing on You is the second Korean drama that I watched during quarantine. I was riding high on my love of all things Itaewon Class that I wanted something else to watch immediately and Chase came again with another clutch recommendation in this one. I started it and though it took me a couple of episodes to get into this show, once I got into it, I was all the way into it. I have to say that though I loved the hell out of the romance between Ri Jung Hyuk and Yoon Se Ri (a super swoony slow-burn romance), it was these guys that totally made me fall head over heels in love with this show. These guys are serious squad goals.

Squad Goals

So this show centers on Yoon Se Ri and the North Korean army guy who risks his life so many times to try to get Se Ri safely back to her home in South Korea. You see, Yoon Se Ri is a South Korean heiress who is also the CEO of her own bestselling beauty products company. She’s got quite the colorful family and when a paragliding accident lands her in North Korea (yeah, she really did leave South Korea on a paraglider and landed all the way in North Korea, haha), she is spotted by Ri Jung Hyuk. Ri is part of the North Korean Army and he is FOINE. Check him out…

So Se Ri and Ri try so many different ways to sneak Se Ri back into South Korea without the North Korean government finding out. It takes them quite a while to finally get it right and throughout it all, they’re growing closer and closer. Not only are the two of them growing closer but Ri engages his friends to help him get Se Ri back home safe and sound and Se Ri gets close to them as well. There are so many different things going on in this show and it took me a while to untangle all of the threads to make sense of everything but things do unravel and they do make sense and I thought the writing was pretty darn great. I laughed a lot, I cried quite a bit and I adored so many of the characters. So many squad goals here from Ri’s boys to Se Ri’s old lady crew in North Korea. They were all super great characters that added life to a pretty colorful story.

I did feel bad for the secondary love story here because damn, they deserved better than they got but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment too much. This is a fabulous show that will stay near and dear to your heart long after you finish it. I highly recommend this one.

Listen to the OST

This OST is bomb as hell. There are so many songs that I adored while watching the show and all these months later, I’m still enjoying this soundtrack. It’s a good one so have yourself a listen.

Final Rating

4.5 out of 5
