Top 5 Wednesday: Gateway Books to Your Favorite Genre

Posted September 28, 2016 by Rowena in Features | 12 Comments

T5W Top 5 Wednesday was created by Lainey at Ginger Reads Lainey but is hosted by Sam at Thoughts on Tomes. You can read more about this meme on the Goodreads Group here. This weeks topic is:
September 28: Gateway Books to Your Favorite Genre –What books do you think are good to introduce people to your favorite genre? If you have more than one favorite genre, feel free to split it up to cover both.
My favorite genre is contemporary romance. It doesn’t really matter if it’s Young Adult, New Adult or Adult. I just love contemporary romances so this was pretty easy for me. Here are the books I would place on my starter kits to introduce new readers to my favorite genre. 1. The Deal by Elle Kennedy (New Adult).
She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy… Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date. …and it’s going to be oh so good All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.
Is it really a surprise that this book is in my contemporary romance starter kit? I mean, I feel like I talk about this book every week. I would apologize to you guys but…eff it, I love this book and it belongs in my starter kit. I’ve started my friends off on their reading journey with this book and I haven’t had any complaints yet. Lots of love for this book, author and series. 2. Just the Sexiest Man Alive by Julie James (Adult).
No woman could resist him—except the one he wanted most… Cool, Calm, Collected… Nothing fazes Taylor Donovan. In the courtroom she never lets the opposition see her sweat. In her personal life, she never lets any man rattle her—not even her cheating ex-fiancé. So when she’s assigned to coach People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for his role in his next big legal thriller, she refuses to fall for the Hollywood heartthrob’s charms. Even if he is the Jason Andrews. Confident, Famous, Irresistible… Jason Andrews is used to having women fall at his feet. When Taylor Donovan gives him the cold shoulder, he’s thrown for a loop. She’s unlike any other woman he’s ever met: uninterested in the limelight, seemingly immune to his advances, and shockingly capable of saying no to him. She’s the perfect challenge. And the more she rejects him, the more he begins to realize she may just be his perfect match.
This is a good choice for new to romance readers. Some people that love romantic comedy movies but don’t really know how they’d like those steamy sexy time scenes. This will introduce them to the character development that we love so much in romance novels without all of the steamy scenes. Some people need to work themselves up to that stuff and this works out perfectly for those guys. 3. The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen (Young Adult).
There are alternate cover editions for this ISBN here and here. A long, hot summer… That’s what Macy has to look forward to while her boyfriend, Jason, is away at Brain Camp. Days will be spent at a boring job in the library, evenings will be filled with vocabulary drills for the SATs, and spare time will be passed with her mother, the two of them sharing a silent grief at the traumatic loss of Macy’s father. But sometimes, unexpected things can happen—things such as the catering job at Wish, with its fun-loving, chaotic crew. Or her sister’s project of renovating the neglected beach house, awakening long-buried memories. Things such as meeting Wes, a boy with a past, a taste for Truth-telling, and an amazing artistic talent, the kind of boy who could turn any girl’s world upside down. As Macy ventures out of her shell, she begins to question her sheltered life. Is it really always better to be safe than sorry?
This book hits me in the feels every single time that I read it because it’s a character driven book that has a cute romance that gets me every time. It also makes me want to read more of the same every time I re-read it so it’s a favorite of mine to recommend because I’m always hopeful that others will love and want to read more books like it. 4. After the Kiss by Lauren Layne (Adult).
Lauren Layne kicks off her Sex, Love & Stiletto series with a delightful short novel! In After the Kiss, the star columnist of Stiletto magazine will do anything for a story. Anything . . . except fall in love. Julie Greene loves flings. Loves steamy first dates, sizzling first kisses, and every now and then, that first sexy romp between the sheets. Comfy pants, sleepy Sundays, movie nights on the couch? Shudder. But when Julie gets assigned the hardest story of her career—a first-person account of that magical shift between dating and “I do”—she’ll need a man brave enough to give a total commitment-phobe a chance at more. Normally, Mitchell Forbes would be exactly that man. A devastatingly hot workaholic who tends to stay in relationships for far too long, he should be the perfect subject for Julie’s “research.” But what Julie doesn’t know is that Mitchell is looking to cut loose for once in his life. And the leggy journalist notorious for avoiding love is exactly the type of no-strings fling he’s looking for. In other words, Mitchell is the polar opposite of what Julie needs right now. And, at the same time, he’s exactly what she wants.
Lauren Layne is an author that needs to be read by everyone interested in contemporary romances with compelling characters, strong friendships and all around great romance. She is one of my favoritest authors ever and she contemporary romance game stays strong with every new release. After the Kiss is a great place to start anyone Lauren Layne’s reading adventure. 5. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (Young Adult).
Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris–until she meets Étienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, beautiful, Étienne has it all…including a serious girlfriend. But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true. Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?
This is another fabulous contemporary romance for young readers that I fell in absolute love with. I highly recommend this book for any of you guys who wants a cute young love romance to read. So good! What books would make it on to your gateway to your favorite genres list?

Eye Candy Friday: Garrett Graham from The Deal by Elle Kennedy

Posted September 16, 2016 by Rowena in Features | 8 Comments

ECF This week’s Eye Candy Friday guy is Garret Graham from The Deal by Elle Kennedy. Oh man, this guy. I loved him. Adored him. Wanted to marry him, I loved him so much. He was my kind of love interest because he was everything in this book.

His book information:

The Deal
She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…

Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on.

…and it’s going to be oh so good

All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for.
Garrett was a cocky athlete who knew what he wanted and went after it. In the beginning, he was a hockey player who needed to pass a class in order to keep being eligible to play his sport for his school but the one girl who aced the test nobody else did; wanted nothing to do with him. He was blown away that there was a girl on the planet that was immune to his hotness and celebrity status on campus.

He said things like this:

“Just out of curiosity,” she says, “After you wake up in the morning, do you admire yourself in the mirror for one hour or two?”

“Two,” I reply cheerfully.

“Do you high five yourself?”

“Of course not.” I smirk. “I kiss each of my biceps and then point to the ceiling and thank the big man upstairs for creating such a perfect male specimen.”
He could not get Hannah Wells to change her mind about tutoring him. Nothing worked on her but he didn’t give up. He found out what she wanted most and offered an exchange. For her help in class, he would help her land the guy she wanted. The more time they spent together, the more time he wanted to spend with her. When his help turns physical, he completely won me over.

“I clench my teeth. “I’m not a virgin, Garrett.”

“You’re not a puck bunny either.”

“So that means I’m not allowed to sleep with a guy I’m attracted to?”

He rakes both hands over his scalp now, looking equally aggravated. Then he takes a breath, exhales slowly, and meets my eyes. “Okay, here’s the deal. I believe you’re attracted to me. I mean—one, who isn’t? And two, you moan like crazy whenever my tongue’s in your mouth.”

I bristle. “I do not.”

“Agree to disagree.”
On the surface, Garrett was this college playboy who loved hockey. He didn’t take much seriously (except hockey) and he lived his life in the fast lane. He partied, he practiced and he had fun with the ladies. That all started changing when Hannah came into his life. She changed him and she made him better. The stuff that he did to help Hannah went above and beyond what he signed up for but he never once looked back because once he decided he was all in. He was. I loved him to pieces…and that is why he’s this week’s book boyfriend.

“How did I go so long without noticing you, damn it? Why did it take seeing a stupid A on your midterm to make me notice?”

He sounds so genuinely upset that I scoot closer and kiss him. “It doesn’t matter. You know me now.”

“I do,” he says fiercely.”
*sigh* If you haven’t read his book, you should fix that because OMG, it’s so good. Here’s who I pictured as Garrett.

Top 5 Wednesday: Authors I’m Waiting on Another Book From

Posted August 10, 2016 by Rowena in Features | 8 Comments

T5W So, I saw this on A Mismatched Reader today and it looks like something completely doable and fun to bring to the blog so I’m going to start participating in this (let’s see how long this lasts, ha!). It’s actually hosted by Booktuber Sam at Thoughts on Tomes and you can read more about this meme on the Goodreads Group here. This week’s topic discusses authors we’re waiting on more books from. It was super easy for me since there are a lot of authors and books that I’m looking forward to.
1. Julie James.
Julie James writes smart contemporary romances with strong heroines and swoon-worthy heroes and she’s taking a lot longer writing her next book that was supposed to come out this year but got pushed back to next year and got a new title. That book is The Thing about Love and it’s the next book in her FBI/US Attorney’s series and I’m super stoked about it. I just know that it’s going to be a great one.
2. Jen Frederick.
I love Jen Frederick’s books. I’m completely addicted to them and I’m super anxious for the next book in both her Woodlands series (Adam!) and her Gridiron series (Ace ??!!@#@#$%@) We’ve got a few months before either of those books come out and I’m counting down the days, hours and minutes until they do. I’m mighty curious to see the redemption of Asshole Ace from Jock Blocked and I’m super excited to meet Knox’s twin brother Ty and see him in his element at his school. On the Woodlands side, Adam! Super sexy, bad boy tattooed Adam. I want! *swoon*
3. Elle Kennedy.
There are quite a few books that I’m waiting on from Elle Kennedy. The Goal is one, the last book in the Killer Instincts series (*sob*), the next book in the Outlaws series and that’s not even counting the book that I’m so thirsty for that she co-wrote with Jen Frederick, Twisted Palace. I love me some Elle Kennedy and I need to know what went down with Tucker…and Sabrina. I need their story like yesterday and I think it’s probably one of the most anticipated books by me this year. I love this series and I already know that I’m going to love it (I mean, come on…it’s an Elle Kennedy book)…I just need it to be on my kindle app already.
4. Lauren Layne.
Someone Like You is the last book in the Oxford series and I’m looking forward to it because…LINCOLN!! It’s freaking Lincoln Mathis’ book. The guy that we’ve been swooning over ever since the Sex, Love & Stiletto’s books. Or, actually since his best friend Cole’s book (Irresistibly Yours, Oxford #1). He’s the extremely good looking bachelor that bangs all the girls and stays friends with them afterward. There’s always someone new and there’s a reason why Lincoln won’t commit to anyone and in freaking December, we’ll finally find out why. Yippy skippy!
5. Cora Carmack.
It’s been a year since All Played Out came out and I have been super anxious to get my hands on Stella’s book because Stella! OMG Stella! I need to know that she’s okay, that she ends up with someone deserving of her greatness and I really need to see everyone else from this series that I have grown to care for and love the hell out of. I can honestly go on and on about this topic, list at least 6-7 more authors off the top of my head but this is a Top 5 not a Top 20 so I’ll cut it out but seriously, these authors are my go to authors. I love their stuff so I’m really looking forward to their books. I just wish they wrote faster. 🙂 Are there any authors that you’re waiting on books from? What books are you waiting on?

Book Club: The Off-Campus Series by Elle Kennedy

Posted February 10, 2016 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

Book Bunch 1 Our first actual book club meeting of the year kicked off this week and I couldn’t have been more excited. We were discussing three books since all three of us read them all and I was in charge of the discussion. This month, we were discussing the Off Campus series by Elle Kennedy.
The Deal by Elle Kennedy The Mistake by Elle Kennedy The Score by Elle Kennedy
I came prepared to discuss the delicious-ness of the heroes of all three books but we were able to have an in depth discussion of what worked for us and what didn’t work for us. It was great! This was probably my favorite book club meeting that we’ve had in a long time. We laughed, we ate and we talked books. We went to a sports bar and grill (Buffalo Wild Wings at the Carson Mall) to keep in theme with our books and while the setting was great, the food freaking sucked. My boneless wings were dry af, our french fries were cold and so was our dessert that we all shared. Nothing about my eating experience that night made me want to return to that place so I probably won’t ever go back. Here are some awards we gave out last night:
Most Bangable Hero: Dean DiLaurentis from The Score Favorite Hero: Garrett Graham from The Deal Favorite Heroine: Allie Hayes from The Score Favorite Book: The Deal (2), The Score (1)
Most Memorable Scene from The Deal: Graham waits Hannah out at the diner (1), Graham helps Hannah overcome personal issue (1) and when Hannah finds out what Graham did to all the guys on the campus while they were on a break (1). Most Memorable Scene from The Mistake: Grace’s I Love You scene (1), Logan’s I Love You Scene (1) and the cafeteria scene when Logan kisses Grace in front of everyone (1). Most Memorable Scene from The Score: The bathtub scene, the scene in New York where Dean and Allie thought Beau was sleeping and when Hannah and Garrett find out about Dean and Allie (after Sean left). All in all, we had a great night and if Brenna had come with me to my book club meeting this time around, she wouldn’t have said, “Mom, you guys didn’t have talk about the book!” Haha. 022016 Book Club
Excuse the fuzziness of the picture but well, here’s our book bunch!
Next month’s book discussion will be on Once and Always by Judith McNaught. Once and Always
Across the vast ocean sailed Victoria Seaton, a free-spirited American beauty left suddenly orphaned and alone. Eager to claim her long-lost heritage, she was amazed at the formal elegance of Wakefield, the sumptuous English estate of her distant cousin…the notorious Lord Jason Fielding. Sought after at plays, operas, and balls by London’s most fashionable ladies, Jason remained a mystery to Victoria. Bewildered by his arrogant demeanor, yet drawn to his panther-like grace, she came to sense the searingly painful memories that smoldered in the depths of his jade-green eyes. Unable to resist her spitfire charm, Jason gathered her at last into his powerful arms, ravishing her lips with his kisses, arousing in her a sweet, insistent hunger. Wed in desire, they were enfolded in a fierce, consuming joy, free at last from the past’s cruel grasp. Then, in a moment of blinding anguish, Victoria discovered the shocking treachery that lay at the heart of their love…a love she had dreamed would triumph…Once And Always.
Should be interesting…and I can’t wait!
