The Monthly Recap: December 2022

Posted January 3, 2023 by Rowena in Features | 2 Comments

The Monthly Recap posts are a way for me to take a look back and reflect on my previous month in Korean dramas. I always lose track of what I want to watch and I need these posts to keep me honest with my damn self because I be forgetting shit.

December was a busy month for me personally but I was able to get some quality k-drama watching in and that always makes me happy. So let’s start this recap, shall we?

Monthly Stats

Dramas Watched: 12 | Dramas Completed: 4 | Dramas Dropped: 4 | Dramas Still Watching: 4
Dramas Reviewed: 9 | Boyfriend of the Month: Kim Tae Hee
Favorite Drama: May I Help You? | Least Favorite Drama: Behind Every Star

Dramas I Completed

Behind Every Star | 3 out of 5
Revenge of Others | 3.5 out of 5
May I Help You | 4 out of 5
Reborn Rich | 3.5 out of 5

These were all solid dramas but Behind Every Star was probably my least favorite of the bunch. I did enjoy the others and while I LOVE May I Help You, I don’t think any of the remaining dramas listed will make my favorite shows of the year list.

Dramas I Dropped

Extraordinary You
The First Responders

Like I said above, December was a busy month for me personally so I had to drop a couple of shows that I do hope to get back to soon(ish). It’s not that I wasn’t enjoying these, I just had a lot of stuff going on and haven’t gotten back to them. I’m hoping to finish them out this month. Wish me luck on that.

Dramas I’m Still Watching

Alchemy of Souls 2: Light and Shadow
The Forbidden Marriage
The Interest of Love
Unlock My Boss
Island, Season 1

I’m going to be so sad this coming weekend because the final season of Alchemy of Souls comes to an end. It’s my favorite show of the year so far and I’m not ready to say goodbye to Jang Uk and Naksu and the rest of the gang. The other shows are great too…I hope that they stay that way.

Dramas I Reviewed

Blind | 4.5 out of 5
Love in Contract | 4 out of 5
Extraordinary Attorney Woo | 4.5 out of 5
Alchemy of Souls | 5 out of 5
Hotel Del Luna | 4 out of 5

Gaus Electronics | 4.5 out of 5
Bad Prosecutor | 4 out of 5
Little Women | 4 out of 5
Weak Hero, Class 1 | 4.5 out of 5

Actors that Stood Out

Lee Jun Young: Lee Jun Young as Kim Tae Hee was the bomb. I’ve seen him in a few other things but this role is my favorite of his. I watched a lot of episodes of May I Help You multiple times because he’s so easy on the eyes. Gotta love the eye candy but I also really enjoyed the way that he made Kim Tae Hee shine.

Seo Ji Hoon: I don’t remember ever seeing Seo Ji Hoon in any other drama before but I really liked what he brought to Seok Jae Beom character. He was so great that I looked him up and made note of everything else he’s been in and has coming up, I’m a supporter of his now.

Steven Noh: Jane was my favorite part of the show, Behind Every Star but Lee Sang Wook was a very close second. He was so fine that I had an attitude whenever he didn’t pop on the show enough to suit me. I didn’t know who he was before but I know him now…:)

How was your month, in all the things? Did you read or watch anything good (or bad)? Share in the comments, I’d love to catch up!

Review: Gaus Electronics

Posted December 20, 2022 by Rowena in Reviews | 0 Comments

Gaus Electronics

Starring: Kwak Dong Yeon, Go Sung Hee, Bae Hyun Sung, Kang Min Ah, Baek Hyun Jin, Heo Jung Do
Year Released: 2022
Number of Episodes: Drama, Business, Comedy, Life, Romance
Country: South Korea
Director: Park Joon Soo
Where I Watched It: Viki
Who I Watched It For: Kwak Dong Yeon

Stress is no stranger to the members of Marketing Team 3 of the home appliance department at the Gaus Electronics HQ. The firm is a busy, multinational company, but this is a team that most workers dream of getting out of – and where chaos is no stranger!

Some 10 employees make up the team. These include Lee Sang Sik, a man with a positive personality who often misjudges his coworkers’ moods, causing trouble as a result! There is also Cha Na Rae, the hot-tempered assistant manager! Also among their number is Baek Ma Tan, the heir of the owners of Gaus Electronics’ fiercest rival – Power Group. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and has never known hardship. But he shocked his entire family when he decided to join Gaus as a junior employee! His polar opposite is Geon Gang Mi, who comes from more modest origins and has always tried to pull herself up by her bootstraps – pushing herself to succeed at every step (although she does have a tendency to change when she drinks alcohol!).

While they seem to have very little in common at first, they slowly begin to form a bond, with possible sparks of romance in the air! Will any of the marketing team succeed in escaping? Or will they eventually find a way to quell the workplace chaos?

I’ve become a fan of Kwak Dong Yeon so when I saw that he was coming out with a new comedy, I was interested in starting it and I’m so glad that I did. I wasn’t expecting The Office when I started this one but I’m not mad at all that this was the kind of drama that I got. I’ve watched a few comedy office dramas before but I didn’t enjoy them as much as I enjoyed this one so I was a little scared that I wouldn’t like this one as well but that was not the case. I completely adored this show.

The Story

This drama follows a marketing team for a corporate office. They’re not the most popular marketing team but for me, they were a unique bunch that had me tuning in every single week, ready, with a smile on my face. They are the goofiest bunch that had me laughing out loud many different times but they were also a hard-working bunch as well. They tackled each project they were handled with determination and they handled rejection and anything that came their way with a grace that wasn’t at all graceful but fun all the same.

Main Male Lead

Our main male lead, Lee Sang Shik is one of the goofiest of the marketing team 3 bunch. When we first meet him, he’s clumsy, he’s goofy, but he’s also passionate about doing a good job. I loved that he was at the bottom of the totem pole at the office but where he and his lady love was concerned, he was the top dawg. He didn’t see her as a woman until long after it was obvious that she saw him as a man. Seeing him live his life and try his best in all parts of his life made this show just that much more entertaining for me and I really liked seeing him in a main role since I don’t think I’ve seen him in one yet.

Sang Shik is such a fantastic character. He thinks he’s so much cooler than he actually is and the shit that he got himself into, the stuff that he believed about himself just had me cracking up every week. He was a highlight of the year for me, for sure.

Main Female Lead

I’ve enjoyed seeing this actress in a few dramas so I was looking forward to seeing her again. While this character wasn’t my favorite of hers, I still enjoyed getting to know her and seeing her get her man that she pretended to hate every single week. I liked that her love for Sang Shik wasn’t perfect. My girl kept getting injured every time she was with or around Sang Shik so I understood why she was the way that she was with him and I liked it even more that she was annoyed that she liked him.

She was such a confident woman at work but seeing her struggle with her personal life made me love her character all the more. She was a lot of fun and I enjoyed her a lot.

The Cast

I absolutely adored this cast. From the main characters to the supporting characters, they were all fantastic. The boss had me cracking up in every single episode and the banter and the chemistry was so much fun. I can’t explain how much I enjoyed all of the characters, I just did. Every single character was different and unique and brought a different flavor to a colorful drama that was a big highlight of my week. My favorite storyline had to be the rich son of the competing company, going undercover to learn how the less fortunate live. Seeing him fall in love with his coworker that kept turning him down was another bright spot for me.

They hit all of their jokes, and delivered their characters to us on a gold platter and I ate it up every week. I also liked the guy that was there every week but nobody paid any attention to.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this was such a delightful show and I can’t recommend it enough. If you’re in the mood for something light, funny, and just a whole lot of fun, check this one out. There’s much to enjoy and a whole to recommend. The cast, the commercials for the projects that team three worked on during the show, the romances, and just the commeraderie between everyone on the team. I laughed a lot, I happy sighed a lot, and I enjoyed this one a lot. It was a nice break from the gloom and doom of all the other shows that I was watching at the same time that I was watching this one. Loved it.

The Monthly Recap: November 2022

Posted December 6, 2022 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

The Monthly Recap posts are a way for me to take a look back and reflect on my previous month in Korean dramas. I always lose track of what I want to watch and I need these posts to keep me honest with my damn self because I be forgetting shit.

You guys, we are 6 days into the last month of 2022. Where has the time gone? Shitballs. 2022 has been a doozy of a year and while there have certainly been a whole lot of ups, the year wasn’t without some pretty big downs as well. November, I didn’t get everything that I wanted to watch, watched but that’s okay…I’m still excited for what December brings.

I spent Thanksgiving with my family in California and while that was great, my sister was sick and missed Thanksgiving with the rest of the family so that was a bummer. She’s better now though so I’m glad. So let’s start this recap, shall we?

Monthly Stats

Dramas Watched: 12 | Dramas Dropped: 3 | Dramas Still Watching: 6
Dramas Reviewed: 7 | Boyfriend of the Month:
Favorite Drama: Weak Hero, Class 1 | Least Favorite Drama: Love is for Suckers

Dramas I Completed

Blind | 4.5 out of 5
Gaus Electronics | 4.5 out of 5
Love in Contract | 4 out of 5
One Oridinary Day | 4.5 out of 5
Rookie Cops | 4 out of 5

Weak Hero, Class 1 | 5 out of 5
Bad Prosecutor | 4.5 out of 5
Fan Letter, Please | 4 out of 5
When the Weather’s Fine | 3.5 out of 5

Dramas I Dropped

Love is for Suckers
Curtain Call
Grid

I quit the first two dramas because I just wasn’t into them. The main leads in Love is for Suckers drove me up the wall and I lost count of how many times I wanted to fight the female lead. She was such a shitty friend to the male lead and no matter how many times the male lead showed up for her, she instead only used him for her damn job.

Grid wasn’t a bad drama, I just wasn’t in the mood for a sci-fi kind of drama so though I dropped it, I’m planning on picking that one up again at a later time.

Dramas I’m Still Watching

May I Help You?
Behind Every Star
Revenge of Others
The First Responders
Reborn Rich

Dramas I Reviewed

Again My Life | 4 out of 5
Money Heist Korea: Joint Economic Area, Part 1 | 4 out of 5
Shootings Stars | 3.5 out of 5
Why Her? | 3 out of 5

Yumi’s Cells 2 | 3.5 out of 5
Soundtrack #1 | 4.5 out of 5
Love All Play | 4 out of 5

Actors that Stood Out

Choi Hyun Wook: I adored his character in Weak Hero, Class 1 and I need the second season of that show to come out so that we can catch up with his character. I’m pretty anxious about how his character will fit into the next season. Please, please, please be okay!

Do Kyung Soo: Jin Jung was such a great character. I loved how his moral compass was on tighter than a bowstring. He did what he felt was right even when it was hard and he made things fun as well. I adored the heck out of him and miss him now that the drama is over.

Yoon Park: I’m a sucker for a single dad trope and I really adored Bang Jung Seok in Fan Letter, Please. He was one of the last main leads that I loved since I watched his drama at the end of the month but he’s definitely a memorable one. I adored him and am already waiting for his next project.

How was your month, in all the things? Did you read or watch anything good (or bad)? Share in the comments, I’d love to catch up!

The Wednesday Five: K-Drama Male Besties

Posted November 16, 2022 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

I’m a list person. I have a list for every single thing in my life from a to-do list, a list of books that I want to read, a running shopping list, and in the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing different k-entertainment lists that I’ve been keeping track of. You’ll be seeing my top 5 lists of stuff like my current celebrity crushes, my favorite k-drama female protagonists, my favorite k-drama male protagonists, my to-be-watched k-dramas, and you know, stuff like that.

This week’s Wednesday Five will feature the five k-drama male characters that I want to be besties with. These are male characters that will round up my bestie squad quite nicely, I think.

1. Jo Eun Seob from The King: Eternal Monarch

I can’t remember much about this drama, which sucks because it’s a Kim Go Eun drama but you know what I do remember? Jo Eun Seob. I remember how much I loved him. In every single scene, he was such a delight. No matter which world he was in, he stole the show. Every single time. I would have the best time with him. We would laugh so much and I know that he would have my back no matter what cause he was loyal to the soil. He’d make a great bestie and I would never forget to tell him how handsome he is, haha.

2. Ryu Dong Ryong from Reply 1988

Life would be so much fun with Ryu Dong Ryong as your best friend. He’s one of the funniest characters I’ve ever watched but more than how silly he is, there were moments in Reply 1988 where he was also very insightful and gave some of the best advice to his friends. He was loyal and an all around fun character so why wouldn’t I want to be his best friend? He can also sing the hell out of Stevie Wonder’s I Just Called to Say I Love You.

3. Kim Ju Meok from Crash Landing On You

Kim Ju Meok from Crash Landing on You is me. We would be such great friends. We already have so much in common. We love South Korean dramas and we rope everything in our lives to a Korean Drama plot point and when he meets his K-Drama favorite actress?? I about died because he is all of us. I want to be his bestie because we’d spend our days eating jjajangmyeon, watching k-dramas and spinning wild conspiracy theories about our favorite dramas. It would be great!

4. Lee Sang Sik from Gaus Electronics

This guy is a riot. He’s also extremely unlucky and I want to befriend his ol’ goofy ass all the same. He’s such an optimistic person, and the way that he kept pissing everyone at the office off with his personality and the way that he’s a bit of an airhead would round out my friendship circle for the better. I would love to tease him about his love story with Cha Na Rae and it would be a whole lot of fun to hang out with him, Na Rae, and Aziz.

5. Woo Gwang Nam from Love in Contract

Gwang Nam’s a great best friend to Sang Eun that I know that we would be great besties as well. I’m pretty mean in real life so I would slay all of his dragons for him while he beats everyone up for me because he’s a jiu jitsu teacher. Everyone needs a champion in their lives just like Gwang Nam. I would slay all of his dragons because he is precious. So yeah, we need to be besties.

Who are some male k-drama characters that you want to be besties with?

The Weekly Recap (182)

Posted November 7, 2022 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

This year was my first Halloween here in Vegas. I moved here after Halloween in 2020 and then I was in L.A. last Halloween saying bye to my nephews that were leaving on their missions. So it was the first year that I prepared to have my very own Halloween at home. I went to the store, stocked up on candy, and I turned my porch light on and stayed near the front door so I didn’t miss any kids and this is how I looked the entire freaking night…

via GIPHY

Not one damn kid was out trick or treating and not one damn person came to my damn door. NOT ONE. I got ZERO trick-or-treaters. ZERO!!!! Who the hell is gonna eat all of this candy? Sigh. anyway, I’m back on my regular schedule and because it’s getting cold out here, I don’t want to do shit but watch k-dramas and drink hot drinks. It’s soup season so I’m looking forward to eating a whole lot of soups.

Now, let’s get into all of the things that I did last week…

What I Watched

The Policeman’s Lineage | 3 out of 5
Soundtrack #1 | 4 out of 5
Double Patty | 3.5 out of 5
The Bros | 3.5 out of 5

I watched a lot of movies this week and while I liked them, I didn’t LOVE any of them. Oh well. I also re-watched Soundtrack #1 again and really enjoyed that one. I just wish it was longer. Still, Park Hyung Shik is fine as shit and it’s always nice to remember that.

Bad Prosecutor: This is that show. I am loving every little thing about this show. The suspense portion of it, D.O’s acting, and all of the action. Every week, this show just keeps getting better and better and this week wasn’t an exception. This one is so good.

Blind: This show ended this week and it was wild ride from beginning to end. The plot twists were twisting and I was here for it all. All the way up until the end, I had no clue where the story was leading us but that ending? Yeah, that ending was great.

Curtain Call: This is the newest drama to my weekly line up and the first two episodes were a little slow moving but I’m curious enough about where this show takes us that I’ll continue on for the time being. It’s good to see Kang Ha Neul in a new drama though so there’s that.

Gaus Electronics: This show was so damn good and I was sad to say goodbye to it. This cast of characters had me cracking up (out loud) every single week. This show was the right amount of cute, interesting, and silly to catch and keep my attention and I’m going to miss all of these guys.

Love in Contract: Holy cow this drama is so good! I am in love with Jung Ji Ho. He is the perfect imperfect boyfriend and I adore him to pieces. I am also LOVING Kang Hae Jin. Everything that he’s doing to turn his family business around is making me happy swoon all over the place. I can’t wait to see how this show wraps up. It’s been a fun ride.
