Eye Candy Friday: Lincoln Mathis from Someone Like You by Lauren Layne

This week’s Eye Candy Friday man is a character that is near and dear to my heart. He’s a guy that hid his pain from the world for a long time. He was a good friend to those he held close to his heart and he was a devoted partner. I was intrigued with him before his book was released and going into his story, I had loads of questions and Lauren Layne did a phenomenal job of answering those questions at the same time meeting and surpassing all of the hype I had leading up to Someone Like You’s release.

Lincoln Mathis is one hell of a compelling character and to know him, is to love him. Behind that ready smile and the witty quips hid a loneliness that was threatening to overwhelm him and boy was I glad that Daisy Sinclair came along when she did. She brought Lincoln back into the life of the living and he completely blossomed with her.

Here is it his book information:

Lincoln Mathis from Someone Like You by Lauren Layne.

Series: Oxford #3
Release Date: December 6, 2016
Genres: Contemporary, Romance
Publisher: Random House, Loveswept
Pages: 228

Lauren Layne’s bestselling Oxford Series continues with the poignant, heartwarming story of New York’s most eligible bachelor, Lincoln Mathis, a man who’s living a lie—until his dream woman takes away the pain.

Lincoln Mathis doesn’t hide his reputation as Manhattan’s ultimate playboy. In fact, he cultivates it. But behind every flirtatious smile, each provocative quip, there’s a secret that Lincoln’s hiding from even his closest friends—a tragedy from his past that holds his heart quietly captive. Lincoln knows what he wants: someone like Daisy Sinclair, the sassy, off-limits bridesmaid he can’t take his eyes off at his best friend’s wedding. He also knows that she’s everything he can never have.

After a devastating divorce, Daisy doesn’t need anyone to warn her off the charming best man at her sister’s wedding. One look at the breathtakingly hot Lincoln Mathis and she knows that he’s exactly the type of man she should avoid. But when Daisy stumbles upon Lincoln’s secret, she realizes there’s more to the charming playboy than meets the eye. And suddenly Daisy and Lincoln find their lives helplessly entwined in a journey that will either heal their damaged souls . . . or destroy them forever.

Here are some quotes that showcase why I love Lincoln so much. He’s not your normal contemporary hero. To me, he was so much more.

Lincoln’s dark brown hair fell in boyish waves over his forehead, but the broad shoulders and strong jawline were all man. His blue eyes were as playful as they were secretive. He was quick to laugh, even quicker to smile, and as far as she could see, never without the perfect one-liner.

Such a looker, our Lincoln is.

Emma Sinclair, soon to be Emma Cassidy as of this time tomorrow, lifted one elegantly manicured fingernail and flicked his chest. “Promise, Lincoln. No hitting on Daisy.”

“I don’t hit on women.”

Emma gave him a look.

He held up his free hand in surrender. “I don’t. They come to me. I’m like the stamen.”

Emma stared at him with wide, slightly accusatory brown eyes. “The what?”

“The stamen. The pollen-producing part of a flower, Sinclair. Don’t you watch the Discovery Channel? Animal Planet? I just saw a fascinating documentary on bees. See, when the bees land on a flower, their little feet pick up pollen from the stamen—”

“Mathis. Are you talking to my fiancée about semen?” Alex Cassidy asked, coming up beside Emma and setting a possessive hand on her waist.

“Stamen,” Lincoln clarified. “Not semen.

Honestly, is sex all you people think about?”

Ha, only Lincoln can talk about stamen and have me hanging on his every word. Haha.

“I think not. Tell me, Daisy Sinclair, what are your thoughts on New York City?”

She wrinkled her nose. “It’s . . . busy.”

He made a buzzing noise. “The word you were looking for was energetic. Go on.”

“Noisy?” she supplied.

“Lively. Next.”

“Expensive.”

“Yeah okay,” he admitted. “You’ve got me there. But it’s only expensive because everyone wants to be here.”

“I don’t.”

“Mission accepted.”

This rapid fire exchange showcases how perfect these two are for each other and Lincoln’s personality really shines in these kinds of exchanges. These are just small parts of why I loved him so much but I promise, there are so many more reasons that you should check him out for yourself. I promise you won’t regret it.

Here’s what he looks like in my head:

See? Perfection…that’s our Lincoln. Check out his book for yourself, it’s part of a fabulous series that starts with Irresistibly Yours. It’s fun, contemporary, hip and pretty steamy. It’ll heat up your e-readers for sure.

Meet the men of Oxford magazine! In the first captivating spin-off of Lauren Layne’s Sex, Love & Stiletto series, a not-so-friendly battle of the sexes turns into a scorching office romance.

Hotshot sports editor Cole Sharpe has been freelancing for Oxford for years, so when he hears about a staff position opening up, he figures he’s got the inside track. Then his boss drops a bombshell: Cole has competition. Female competition, in the form of a fresh-faced tomboy who can hang with the dudes—and write circles around them, too. Cole usually likes his women flirty and curvy, but he takes a special interest in his skinny, sassy rival, if only to keep an eye on her. And soon, he can’t take his eyes off her.

Penelope Pope knows all too well that she comes off as just one of the guys. Since she’s learned that wanting more usually leads to disappointment, Penelope’s resigned to sitting on the sidelines when it comes to love. So why does Cole make her want to get back in the game? The man is as arrogant as he is handsome. He probably sees her as nothing more than a barrier to his dream job. But when an unexpected kiss turns into a night of irresistible passion, Penelope has to figure out whether they’re just fooling around—or starting something real.  Includes a special message from the editor, as well as an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

With Someone Like You releasing just next month, I did some re-reading of the first two books in the Oxford series because I’m not ready to say goodbye to these guys. I also did the re-reading because I was slumping big time and needed something to dig me out. This book did the trick because I’ve been reading non-stop ever since.

So this book follows Cole Sharpe, a freelance writer for Oxford Magazine, as he battles for a permanent position at the magazine with Penelope Pope. Penelope Pope is moving to New York from Chicago and she’s basically running away from some drama that went down back there. She wanted a fresh start and thinks that Oxford is the place for all of that. When she interviews for the Oxford position, she feels good about it and she’s pretty excited to hopefully be a part of this team. When she meets Cole, she doesn’t think he’ll see her as anything other than a friend so she immediately friend zones herself even though she is crushing big time.

Pen’s experience with guys are…they friend zone her every single time. She’s a tomboy, she knows entirely too much about every sport there is and she can spout of sports stats like a freaking machine. The last guy that she dated ended up doing her dirty so she’s going to steer clear from men for the time being.

She strikes up a friendship with Cole and things are going great. Even though they’re competing for the same position at Oxford, they can’t stop hanging out with each other. Cole didn’t plan on getting buddy buddy with his competition but Penelope is fun. She’s cute and he wants to pick her brain so they become friends and they plant themselves into each others lives and I just really, really enjoyed their friendship that turns into more story.

Both Cole and Penelope are great characters who are great apart but better together. Lauren Layne really shines with writing characters that readers will cheer for and relate to. This was a fun contemporary romance that isn’t to be missed so if you haven’t read this book…fix that cause it’s fun!

Mini Review Round Up (4)I Wish You Were Mine
by Lauren Layne
Series: Oxford #2

Perfect for fans of Alice Clayton and Emma Chase, Lauren Layne’s Oxford series heats up in this story of forbidden desire as a brooding jock hoping for a comeback falls for a woman who’s strictly off-limits.

A year ago, Jackson Burke was married to the love of his life and playing quarterback for the Texas Redhawks. Now he’s retired, courtesy of the car accident that ruined his career—and single, after a nasty scandal torpedoed his marriage. Just as he’s starting to get used to his new life as a health and fitness columnist for Oxford magazine, his unpredictable ex shows up on his doorstep in Manhattan. Jackson should be thrilled. But he can’t stop thinking about the one person who’s always been there for him, the one girl he could never have: her younger sister.

Mollie Carrington can’t say no to Madison. After all, her older sister practically raised her. So when Madison begs for help in winning her ex-husband back, Mollie’s just glad she got over her own crush on Jackson ages ago—or so she thought. Because as Mollie reconnects with Jackson, she quickly forgets all her reasons to stay loyal to her sister. Tempted by Jackson’s mellow drawl and cowboy good looks, Mollie is sick and tired of coming in second place. But she can’t win if she doesn’t play the game.

I Wish You Were Mine is the second book in the Oxford Series and it’s a book that isn’t as popular as Layne’s other books but me? I loved it! I liked getting to know the new guy at Oxford and seeing him form attachments he didn’t even want to begin with.

I’m not normally a sister’s ex romance kind of reader but I was a fan of both Jackson and Mollie. I thought their story was sweet the first time I read this book but I loved them just as much the second time around.

Jackson Burke is a big time football player from Texas that has retired from the NFL. He was in a car accident that injured him and now he’s sidelined from the job he loved and is now working as a fitness writer for Oxford Magazine that is in New York, not Texas. He doesn’t know anyone in New York except his ex-wife’s sister, Mollie and even though they used to be close, they’re not so close anymore and Jackson is sorry about that because he misses her.

Mollie Carrington is over her long ago crush on her ex-brother in law (yes, you read that right) so she can definitely catch up with him over drinks and not fall in love with him all over again. She can totally do it.

Wrong. The more time they spend together, the harder they fall and…I loved them. I loved Jackson. I loved Mollie. I loved seeing them become eachothers champions and I really loved how each of them became home to the other. Their romance wasn’t an easy one, it’s another one of those friendships to lovers type of romances and I enjoy those so much. Lauren Layne hit me in my feels at every turn in this book because the romance wasn’t easy. These two were connected before and it was a messy connection but when all is said and done, you can’t help who you love and I loved that these two let go of what they should feel and went with how they really felt because *swoon* I just adored them together.

This was another fabulous contemporary romance by Lauren Layne and everyone should read and fall in love with them too. 🙂

Top 5 Wednesday: Gateway Books to Your Favorite Genre

Posted September 28, 2016 by Rowena in Features | 12 Comments

Top 5 Wednesday was created by Lainey at Ginger Reads Lainey but is hosted by Sam at Thoughts on Tomes. You can read more about this meme on the Goodreads Group here.

This weeks topic is:

September 28: Gateway Books to Your Favorite Genre

–What books do you think are good to introduce people to your favorite genre? If you have more than one favorite genre, feel free to split it up to cover both.

My favorite genre is contemporary romance. It doesn’t really matter if it’s Young Adult, New Adult or Adult. I just love contemporary romances so this was pretty easy for me. Here are the books I would place on my starter kits to introduce new readers to my favorite genre.

1. The Deal by Elle Kennedy (New Adult).

She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…

Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.

…and it’s going to be oh so good

All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

Is it really a surprise that this book is in my contemporary romance starter kit? I mean, I feel like I talk about this book every week. I would apologize to you guys but…eff it, I love this book and it belongs in my starter kit. I’ve started my friends off on their reading journey with this book and I haven’t had any complaints yet. Lots of love for this book, author and series.

2. Just the Sexiest Man Alive by Julie James (Adult).

No woman could resist him—except the one he wanted most…

Cool, Calm, Collected…

Nothing fazes Taylor Donovan. In the courtroom she never lets the opposition see her sweat. In her personal life, she never lets any man rattle her—not even her cheating ex-fiancé. So when she’s assigned to coach People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for his role in his next big legal thriller, she refuses to fall for the Hollywood heartthrob’s charms. Even if he is the Jason Andrews.

Confident, Famous, Irresistible…

Jason Andrews is used to having women fall at his feet. When Taylor Donovan gives him the cold shoulder, he’s thrown for a loop. She’s unlike any other woman he’s ever met: uninterested in the limelight, seemingly immune to his advances, and shockingly capable of saying no to him. She’s the perfect challenge. And the more she rejects him, the more he begins to realize she may just be his perfect match.

This is a good choice for new to romance readers. Some people that love romantic comedy movies but don’t really know how they’d like those steamy sexy time scenes. This will introduce them to the character development that we love so much in romance novels without all of the steamy scenes. Some people need to work themselves up to that stuff and this works out perfectly for those guys.

3. The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen (Young Adult).

There are alternate cover editions for this ISBN here and here.

A long, hot summer…

That’s what Macy has to look forward to while her boyfriend, Jason, is away at Brain Camp. Days will be spent at a boring job in the library, evenings will be filled with vocabulary drills for the SATs, and spare time will be passed with her mother, the two of them sharing a silent grief at the traumatic loss of Macy’s father.

But sometimes, unexpected things can happen—things such as the catering job at Wish, with its fun-loving, chaotic crew. Or her sister’s project of renovating the neglected beach house, awakening long-buried memories. Things such as meeting Wes, a boy with a past, a taste for Truth-telling, and an amazing artistic talent, the kind of boy who could turn any girl’s world upside down. As Macy ventures out of her shell, she begins to question her sheltered life.

Is it really always better to be safe than sorry?

This book hits me in the feels every single time that I read it because it’s a character driven book that has a cute romance that gets me every time. It also makes me want to read more of the same every time I re-read it so it’s a favorite of mine to recommend because I’m always hopeful that others will love and want to read more books like it.

4. After the Kiss by Lauren Layne (Adult).

Lauren Layne kicks off her Sex, Love & Stiletto series with a delightful short novel! In After the Kiss, the star columnist of Stiletto magazine will do anything for a story. Anything . . . except fall in love.

Julie Greene loves flings. Loves steamy first dates, sizzling first kisses, and every now and then, that first sexy romp between the sheets. Comfy pants, sleepy Sundays, movie nights on the couch? Shudder. But when Julie gets assigned the hardest story of her career—a first-person account of that magical shift between dating and “I do”—she’ll need a man brave enough to give a total commitment-phobe a chance at more.

Normally, Mitchell Forbes would be exactly that man. A devastatingly hot workaholic who tends to stay in relationships for far too long, he should be the perfect subject for Julie’s “research.” But what Julie doesn’t know is that Mitchell is looking to cut loose for once in his life. And the leggy journalist notorious for avoiding love is exactly the type of no-strings fling he’s looking for. In other words, Mitchell is the polar opposite of what Julie needs right now. And, at the same time, he’s exactly what she wants.

Lauren Layne is an author that needs to be read by everyone interested in contemporary romances with compelling characters, strong friendships and all around great romance. She is one of my favoritest authors ever and she contemporary romance game stays strong with every new release. After the Kiss is a great place to start anyone Lauren Layne’s reading adventure.

5. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (Young Adult).

Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris–until she meets Étienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, beautiful, Étienne has it all…including a serious girlfriend.

But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true. Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?

This is another fabulous contemporary romance for young readers that I fell in absolute love with. I highly recommend this book for any of you guys who wants a cute young love romance to read. So good!

What books would make it on to your gateway to your favorite genres list?

Week in Books v2

..and I’m back! I read 4 books this week and I’m still in my reading groove right now. So stinkin’ excited to be reading again.

The highlight of this week was Brenna’s senior pictures. Here’s a picture that I snapped during her photo shoot. I thought she did great but I’m biased. 🙂

Now her senior year is officially under way. Basketball fundraising has started, off-season conditioning has started and I just want everything to slow down.

The Viscount and the Vixen (Hellions of Havisham #3) by Lorraine Heath.

Love begets madness. Viscount Locksley watched it happen to his father after his cherished wife’s death. But when his sire arranges to marry flame-haired fortune hunter Portia Gadstone, Locke is compelled to take drastic measures to stop the stunning beauty from taking advantage of the marquess. A marriage of mutual pleasure could be convenient, indeed… as long as inconvenient feelings don’t interfere.

Desperation forced Portia to agree to marry a madman. The arrangement will offer the protection she needs. Or so she believes until the marquess’s distractingly handsome son peruses the fine print… and takes his father’s place!

Now the sedate—and, more importantly, secure—union Portia planned has been tossed in favor of one simmering with wicked temptation and potential heartbreak. Because as she begins to fall for her devilishly seductive husband, her dark secrets surface and threaten to ruin them both—unless Locke is willing to risk all and open his heart to love.

It’s Locke time. 🙂

Read

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins | 3.5 out of 5
The Boy is Back (Boy #4) by Meg Cabot | 4 out of 5
To Love and to Cherish (Wedding Belles #3) by Lauren Layne | 4.5 out of 5
The Billionaire Next Door (Billionaire Bad Boys #2) by Jessica Lemmon | 4 out of 5

My favorite read of the week was To Love and to Cherish (Wedding Belles #3) by Lauren Layne. I was looking forward to reading Alexis and Logan’s story and Lauren Layne nailed their romance. It was just as great as the other books and I adored both Alexis and Logan. It was so much fun.

My least favorite read of the week goes to The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. Rachel, Megan and even Anna got on my hot damn nerves throughout the entire book but I still ended up liking the book. I couldn’t put the book down even though I was mad as hell at everyone and everything going on. The mystery was nailed though because as soon as I figured it out, I was shocked as shit and before I could lurch up in bed, my iPad fell on my face. Ha! So while I liked the book, it just wasn’t my favorite of the week.

Book Boyfriend

Logan Harris from To Love and to Cherish (Wedding Belles #3) by Lauren Layne.

He smiled down at her, his hands cupping her face. “Ask me again. Ask me the reason.”

Logan was everything that I was hoping he’d be from the previous books in this series and I finished his book with a great big smile on my face. Loved him.
