Week in Books (50)

Posted February 20, 2017 by Rowena in Books, Features | 16 Comments

Week in Books v2 Happy President’s Day to all of my American friends. I hope you guys are enjoying your day off if you’ve got it off (like me). This week was the first round of Playoffs for my girls. Kenna had a bye this week so she automatically advanced to the second round. Brenna, on the other hand went up against Vista Murrieta on Thursday and her team lost so they’re out of the running for a CIF ring. Kenna faced off against Corona Centennial on Saturday and her team put in swift work on that team. It wasn’t even a contest. Corona Centennial didn’t have an answer for anything Redondo (Kenna’s team) put to them and Kenna’s team came out victorious. They advanced to the third round and will face off against St. Anthony’s out of Long Beach on Wednesday. Should be a good game so I’ll be there to cheer my girl on. My other niece Meghan’s team won the championships for their conference but they might have to share the title with the team that owns their one and only loss even though their team have two losses under their belt. The other team they lost to is rumored to have been playing with some illegal players so that loss will probably go away and they’ll have only one loss. They beat Meg’s team by 2 points on the second round of play but Meg’s team beat them by way more than 2 points in the first round so if you ask me, they shouldn’t be sharing shit. Still, Meg’s team deserved the win after all the hard work they’ve put in this season. Go Warriors! I finally had a girls lunch with my friends. Last year, we didn’t get together for the last half of the year. We kept in touch strictly through text messages or a couple of us would get together but the others wouldn’t. we’re trying to do better this year and so far, we’ve gotten together in both January and February. I love hanging with my gals. I tried Popbar (a trendy popsicle place) and that was good but not something that I’d be dying to try out on a weekly basis or anything. All in all, it was a good week in life for me but not really a good week in books. So let’s get on with the books, shall we?

Currently Reading

Silver Silence (Psy-Changelings Trinity #1) by Nalini Singh.
New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh introduces a bold new chapter in her extraordinary paranormal romance saga with the Psy-Changeling Trinity series. Wild passion will encounter the darkest of betrayal… Control. Precision. Family. These are the principles that drive Silver Mercant. At a time when the fledgling Trinity Accord seeks to unite a divided world, with Silver playing a crucial role as director of a worldwide emergency response network, wildness and chaos are the last things she needs in her life. But that’s exactly what Valentin Nikolaev, alpha of the StoneWater Bears, brings with him. Valentin has never met a more fascinating woman. Though Silver is ruled by Silence—her mind clear of all emotion—Valentin senses a whisper of fire around her. That’s what keeps him climbing apartment buildings to be near her. But when a shadow assassin almost succeeds in poisoning Silver, the stakes become deadly serious…and Silver finds herself in the heart of a powerful bear clan. Her would-be assassin has no idea what their poison has unleashed…
I’m supposed to be reading Archangel’s Kiss by Nalini Singh for a buddy review with my friend Holly but I got this book for review. How in the world am I supposed to concentrate on Archangel’s Kiss when Silver’s story is calling my name? I couldn’t so I put it down and have dug into Silver Silence. This freaking book.

I adored Good Boy by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy but was bored with Faking It by Jennifer Crusie so I put that down, only to start a book that I put down too because well…Silver Silence. I tried to finish Archangel’s Kiss before jumping into Silver Silence but I couldn’t do it. I just…couldn’t.

Kaleo is a Savage

Posted September 8, 2016 by Rowena in Miscellaneous | 4 Comments

MegHan My niece Meghan tore one ACL during her sophomore year and the other ACL during her senior year in high school, playing basketball. She has flat feet and has struggled with her feet for most of her life. That didn’t stop her from playing basketball. Meghan is passionate about basketball the same way that I am passionate about books. She missed a lot of family time because she was in the gym or at some camp, playing. When high school started, she was ready. She prepared to make Varsity and start her freshman year and was able to check both of those off her bucket list. She’s a damn good player. She’s a stand out player that all the coaches she’s played against have prepared for because she had nights like this more than once. Two ACL breaks didn’t stop her from pursuing her dream of playing college basketball. After she got hurt the second time, a lot of the colleges that were interested in her disappeared but instead of letting that get her down, she went the community college route and got Co Player of the Year for her conference as a freshman. She’s doing really well and is preparing for her sophomore year of college. My nephew Kaleo is no stranger to injuries. He was born with clubbed feet and lived with his own fair share of feet problems. He made national headlines when (at age 13) he decided to amputate both of his feet for a chance at a pain free life. He’s almost 16 now and he’s got his driver’s license and he’s still the same, fun loving, loud mouth crazy kid. I don’t think there’s anyone funnier than Kaleo in our family because he stays cracking jokes. When he’s in town for the summer, you will hear every single adult yell, “SHUT UP KALEO!” more than once because not only does he crack jokes all the time, he also talks really loud. He’s our family jokester. I was scrolling through Facebook the other day when I came across this: Kaleo LOL! Zero damns given. That’s our Kaleo…responding to Meghan’s post from 3 years ago and being a complete savage too. P.S. Kaleo’s comment is supposed to say, “AYE YOU NEXT WITH YOUR BROKE ACLS” LMAO!

The Girls Went to see Sammy J

Posted April 27, 2016 by Rowena in Miscellaneous | 0 Comments

I have been dying to see Sammy J in concert ever since I found out that he was coming to California way back in January. At the time, I was pretty obsessed with his song Waiting and with his voice as well. I remember sitting in the stands at Brenna’s game one night, singing along to the song playing on my phone when I started googling his tour dates. I found out that he was going to be in town in April and immediately asked my friends to go with me. I got responses immediately from most of them and they were all a go…and this is one of the things we planned on that we actually followed through on. Mulu and I didn’t make it out to Vegas for the Rugby tournament but I wasn’t going to miss out on Sammy J too. I had a blast. We missed the first opening act, The Late Ones (haha, we were the late ones that night) which was a bummer because I actually know those kids. I know their parents and I remember them as little kids but my kids kept me from getting to the venue earlier to catch their performance. Still, the concert was fantastic. We caught Tenelle’s performance and while she sang a lot of covers, she did rock the hell out of them and had Meghan and I scream singing our asses off to the two songs of hers that I knew. Haha. She was great. The crowd was jamming hard when Tenelle was on stage but the minute that Sammy J came out, the crowd somehow got bigger and they just erupted. It was complete madness and that guy from New Zealand rocked the hell out of that crowd. It was one of the funnest things that I’ve done in a while. I didn’t get a lot of videos of the concert cause I was too busy scream singing my way through the show but here are some that I took. Please excuse Meghan’s big ass head in front of me. Haha.
Sammy J singing Waiting (my song!) Sammy J and Tenelle singing Say That You Love Me (my other song!)
Also? Please excuse the shakiness of the video too. My arms got tired. LMAO! Freaking Meghan wouldn’t get her damn hand and phone out of my way either. Ehh. Still, all in all the concert was great. I had a good time with Sammy J (haha), with my girls and I only felt a little bad that Brenna and Makenna (who wanted to go to the concert) stayed behind to babysit Hanah’s kids so that Hanah can go. Here are some pictures from our night out with Sammy J! Sammy J 1 Sammy J 2 Hanah and I are trying to figure out what our next adventure will be so I’ll update when we figure that out. So much fun!

Friday Five (2)

Posted December 4, 2015 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

Friday Five I took last week off from the blog because I spent it with the family for Thanksgiving so this week’s Friday Five will be a random catch up session.

Meg 112415
[1] The Comeback Kid is Back!

Meghan is back in action on the basketball court and she’s in season. She’s playing at El Camino College and she’s got, I think it’s 3 college season games under her belt and she’s lighting up the stat sheets. It’s been really great to see her playing again. She looks strong, she’s playing well and she’s made the Daily Breeze (our local newspaper) Blog consistently so I’m happy for her. She’s got plans and she’s got goals and the exposure is a great way to accomplish those goals and plans. Go Meg!
Wilson Gang Thanksgiving 2015
[2] Team Wilson Gang Thanksgiving 2015.

Thanksgiving this year was at Blanche’s house and we had a good turn out. Ingrid, Chloe, Markus and Chach came in from out of town and we had a good Thanksgiving. We had too much food, leftovers for days and loads of laughing. Chach had an interesting weekend while she was in town and as a family, we laughed a lot at her because that’s what we do. Haha. We also spent some time at the cemetery with Mom and Seko. All in all, it was a good holiday for us and I can’t wait to do it all again at Christmas.

[3] Brenna’s Got a Concussion.

Last week at practice, Brenna got elbowed so hard she saw stars. Literally. She was playing defense against one of her teammates and like Smokey from Friday said, “Got knocked the f*&%ck out!” Haha. So she’s not playing right now. She got cleared to play from the doctor so hopefully she’ll be back on the court soon…cause her team needs her.

Basketball
[4] Basketball Season Has Started.

Basketball is my favorite sport, I like the way they dribble up and down the court…haha. Redondo’s Battle of the Beach tournament kicked off this week and all of the games from here on out count! As of right now, both of my high school teams are 1-1. North lost to Troy on Monday and Redondo lost to Winward on Wednesday. North battles it out with Long Beach Poly today at 3:30 and Redondo plays Harvard Westlake at 6:30. Go Lady Saxons and Seahawks!

[5] Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake’s CMA performance.

This song, actually this performance has been getting a lot of play time at work. I can’t stop listening to it. I’m obsessed. Justin Timberlake is the man! Apparently, so is Chris Stapleton. Mulu, Chris has written a lot of our old country jams. He wrote Your Man by Josh Turner!
