Monthly Recap: April 2017

Posted May 9, 2017 by Rowena in Features | 2 Comments

April was a really bad month, blogging wise for me. I just couldn’t drum up any enthusiasm to write anything or read anything for that matter. I’m hopeful that May will be better.

What I Did

  • Book Binge Turned 10! My book blog, Book Binge turned 10 last month and I’m still trying to wrap my brain around the fact that I’ve been blogging for 10 freaking years.
  • I went to San Jose for Brenna’s last Ninja Tournament. Brenna is wrapping up all high school tournaments and April was for her last Asian League tournament ever. I’m not mad about that but I wasn’t supposed to go on this trip. It was a spur of the moment trip that I’m glad I took. It was a relaxing weekend of basketball and I enjoyed myself.
  • Relay for Life. This year was the fifth year that my family participated in our local Relay for Life walk. We walk in remembrance of loved ones that have lost their lives to cancer and we walk in support of my nephew RJ who is a cancer survivor. It was another busy weekend but it was also a very fulfilling weekend. We walked for 24 hours and I walked a lot more this year than any other year and that made me happy.
  • We met Baby Caiden. Chloe and Markus came down for the walk and to introduce their bundle of joy to the California family. I love this little boy so very much. He’s adorable.
  • Jarred’s having a boy! My nephew Jarred and his girlfriend are having a baby boy! His little boy is going to be the cutest little hockey fan ever!

Monthly Recap: March 2017

Posted April 4, 2017 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

The month of March came and went before I knew what was what. It brought about death and new life and lots and lots of great friends. All in all, it was a mostly good month though my heart goes out to my friend.

What I Did

A picture from my hike in Palos Verdes, CA

Started going on hikes: I started walking with my sisters after dinner each night and hiking with my co workers this month and I’m really liking both. I want to keep up with that even though things are probably going to get a lot busier for me in the coming months with all of Brenna’s senior activity and then graduation coming up. I’m going to be busy making a lot of candy leis too. Gah. Still, walking has become a daily part of my life and I want to keep that up.

Brenna Turned 18: We had a small birthday celebration for my kid turning 18 last month and that was fun. My brother bought dinner, I made a cake and a whole lot of kids showed up so I had to make another cake and we all ate, drank and were merry. In few short months, she will graduate from high school and I’m low key not ready for all of that.

Basketball Ended: The one thing that I was ready for was the end of basketball. I couldn’t stand Bren’s coach, I hated how mad I would get during games, after the games, during the week when Brenna would come home and catch me up on practices, what her coach would say to her and her coach is real brave when talking to minors who are scared of her.

My sister and her Grandson Caiden

Chloe had a baby!: Last year, my niece Chloe got married and her wedding was the most beautiful wedding that I’ve ever been to. My family still gets compliments about her wedding and all of the hard work that we put into it. Well, home girl works fast because she got knocked up not too long after her wedding and she had a beautiful and healthy baby boy named Caiden.

My first Strip Club Outing: I hung out with some old friends that I haven’t seen in a long ass time. The two friends that I used to get in trouble with all the time my freshman year in high school so it was not a surprise to anyone else that they took me to my first strip club. It sure was memorable. My stripper was a black young woman named Mulan and she spun real fast around the pole while completely trashed. That takes some serious skill.

What I Watched on TV

Taken: I glommed the first four episodes of this show and am definitely hooked. I need more episodes of this show pronto. Rollo (from Vikings) has won me over completely in this show.

Big Little Lies: Ames and Greg were talking about this show and they’re really the ones that brought this show to my attention. I watched the first two episodes with Ames and was drawn into the world of crazy Kindergarten parents and just everything. I’m definitely going to be watching more. Reese Witherspoon is the best!

Chicago Justice: I’m a huge fan of all of the Chicago shows and it’s no different with this show. I’m really enjoying the cases and getting to know the characters. I already love the hell out of Peter Stone. I can’t wait for more from these guys.

What I Bought/Was Gifted

What I Got for Review

What I Loved

Seeing and hanging out with old friends. At my friend Foti’s Dad’s funeral, I ran into so many of my childhood friends and we hung out, laughed the night away and reminisced about the good ol’ days. From ditching Sunday School and walking to 7-11 to having a ditching party at my sister’s house our freshman year in high school (and getting her to buy us pizza without knowing that so many people were going to come over after she went back to work, ha!) and just being little bad ass kids, we had the best childhood. We’re planning to stay in touch and I sincerely hope that we do because I have the best memories with these guys.

There you have it…the month that was March in my life. How was your month of March? Read anything good? Bad? Share with the class!

Monthly Recap: February 2017

Posted March 1, 2017 by Rowena in Features | 13 Comments

How are we already in the month of March in the new year? Time needs to slow down. Sheesh.

What I Did

Basketball, basketball, basketball. Basketball overtook our lives this past month with League games then Playoff games and then disappointing ends to everyone’s seasons. Best game of the season was when my Brenna’s Lady Saxons took on my Kenna’s Lady Seahawks. They both played their hearts out and while Kenna’s team smashed on Brenna’s, Brenna played exceptionally well and not even her Coach can take that away from her. I was a proud Mom and Aunt that day.

What I Watched

Riverdale. I’m completely addicted to this show. I’m loving the darker version of the Archie comics and though this is a typical CW (beautiful people, loads of drama) show, I’m all about it. I’m loving Betty, Archie, Veronica, Jughead, everyone. Even Cheryl Blossom and her bitchy ass. Betty’s crazy ass Mom and just all of the drama? I’m so freaking here for it all. If you’re not watching this show, you should be.

Hawaii 5-0. I’m binge watching this show right now. I stopped watching it about mid-season 6 and have been meaning to catch up and then never did. I’m all caught up now and I’m still loving McGarrett’s crazy ass, Danny’s whiny ass and the rest of the team as well. I’m still low key shipping McGarrett and Kono and I don’t even care that Adam is the bomb, too. Haha. Such a good show. There’s a really good Polynesian representation on this show and I love that.

Suits. I’m watching this show faithfully but I’m not really sure why. This season is low key boring but I love Harvey, Mike, Donna and the rest of the gang so even though I’m not all that into this season, I’m still watching every single episode, every single week.

I also watched the following movies:

1. Patriots Day (2016) | Good
2. John Wick (2014) | Very Good
3. John Wick 2 (2017) | Very Good
4. Accidentally Engaged (2016) | Cheesy, but Cute

My favorite movies of the month go to the John Wick movies. Why in the world did I wait so long to watch those? Those movies were the bomb. Thanks to my brother Pete for bringing them to my attention.

What I Listened To

Bruno Mars. Yeah, I’m still listening to this album and yes, I’m still loving the hell out it. Say somethin’…haha.

Say You Won’t Let Go by James Arthur. Brenna brought this song to my attention. She loves this song and because she played it over and over last month, it grew on me until I loved it myself.

What I Read

1. Act Like It by Lucy Parker | 4 out of 5
2. Pretty Face by Lucy Parker | 4.25 out of 5
3. Good Boy by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy | 4.25 out of 5
4. Faking It by Jennifer Crusie (re-read) | DNF
5. Silver Silence by Nalini Singh | 4.25 out of 5
6. Archangels Kiss by Nalini Singh | 4 out of 5

February was a slow reading month for me. I didn’t read much but I’m happy with the books that I read outside of the DNF. My favorite reads of the month go to Silver Silence, Pretty Face and Good Boy. All were fabulous reads.

What I Loved

One of the local malls in my town got renovated and it’s fancy as hell. The food court is more upscale, too. There’s no McDonalds, Taco Bell, not even a Chick Fil-A. The new and improved food court serves Pinks hot dogs, Chipotle, Panda Express, sushi, Korean food, Blaze Pizza and bunch of other stuff. My sisters, my friends, my kids and I have spent some serious time at this food court, having lunch and trying out the new spots. We love them all.

How was your February? Did you do anything fun? See or read anything good?

Monthly Recap: January 2017

Posted February 1, 2017 by Rowena in Features | 6 Comments

January was a pretty busy month. Brenna started talking to a new boy. Chach left for her mission. Chloe came for a visit. Cheridan got hurt. Me? I did all of the things. I’m hopeful that February will be better. In the world and in my life. I’m sitting over here with my fingers crossed because…it needs to get better.

What I Did

Tried two new to me restaurants. Hakata and Burger City Grill. Both local joints that are pretty popular.

Hakata is one of Brenna’s best friend’s family restaurants. They serve ramen noodles and with all of the rain that we got in So Cal in the last month, Hakata was the perfect recipe for cold nights. Since we first went, we’ve gone back twice and I have plans to go back this weekend. Seriously good stuff!

The other restaurant that we tried out is a burger joint that opened up in our neighborhood. The burger joint is owned by one of my good friend’s cousins. Their family specializes in burgers so we weren’t surprised that we enjoyed our food so much. Burger City Grill got two thumbs way up from everyone in our family and it’s become our go-to hangout spot for after the girl’s basketball games. The Santa Monica burger is probably my favorite.

What I Watched

Riverdale: I watched the first episode of this series and I’m intrigued. I like the darker tone to the Archie comics and I also like that in this version of the comic, Veronica and Betty are friends. Close friends. In the grand scheme of things though…at least in this version of Archie – I’m Team Betty. Ha! Sorry Veronica. I can’t wait for more Jughead, too. We didn’t get nearly enough of him in the pilot. They’ve got a storyline going on right now that I hate, hate, hate but I’m hopeful that it won’t last for very much longer since the woman is only in 4 episodes, according to IMDB. *fingers crossed*

Teen Wolf: My loyalty to my ship is finally paying off because…STYDIA IS HAPPENING!! The kiss changed everything guys and I knew in my heart of hearts that was true when it happened, seasons and seasons ago. So every single time that Lydia’s gaze strayed to Stiles in the last two seasons, she was in love with him. Yippy skippy. Gah. I love this teenage drama.

Suits: Another one of my ships that I’m going to keep right on shipping hasn’t happened on this one but dude…Harvey ships Darvey just as much as I do. That guy is still dreaming of my girl Donna. I love it. Now they just need to get together already!

What I Loved

Basketball season is under way for us and this past week was rivalry week. Redondo played Costa and North played West. We won!

A few years ago, Meghan played basketball for Redondo and when she played against Costa (I think it was her junior year), they booed her and they taunted her at every turn during the game and my hatred for that school was cemented. I hate that school and their stupid gym. Anyway, it’s a few years later and Meg and I went to watch Kenna and her Lady Seahawks take on that stupid ass school at their house. There were green foam fingers all over the place. Meghan picked one up and sat on it to cushion her seat and as we were leaving the gym (the Redondo boys were spanking the Costa boys), Meghan picked up her foam finger and threw it in the trash. I don’t know why it made my night, but it did. Take that, stupid Costa. LOL.

How was your month in books? In movies? In life?

Monthly Recap: November 2016

Posted December 1, 2016 by Rowena in Features | 10 Comments

Guys! We’re almost done with 2016. In a matter of months, my daughter will be a high school graduate. I just can’t even deal right now.

What I Did

team-wilson-gang-basketball-2016-2017

1. Lady Saxons Kick Off Potluck: Basketball season is under way and November kicked it all off. Every year, our North High Lady Saxons basketball program kicks their basketball season with a team potluck where the official rosters for all levels of basketball are introduced, meeting and greeting the newbies and being social with the oldies takes place and this year, between Brenna and Cheridan, we brought like 20 people with us. It was a good time and I’m excited for our season.
2. Lady Seahawks Kick Off Luau: Makenna’s annual fundraising luau was on the same day as our Lady Saxons Kick Off Potluck so our day started at Redondo. Makenna’s a senior this year so she did the senior siva Samoa and she did a great job. I wasn’t even mad that I had to make up a dance for her to do in less than a week. We pulled it out and she did great.
3. I turned 36: November 13th was my birthday and I turned 36. My bestie made me dinner and we hung out, laughed it up with my girls Bren and Ken. It was a low key event and I was glad. I’m a homebody so low key is how I roll. It was a good birthday so yay for another year!
4. Weendizzle turned 1: November was also my blog anniversary. I started this blog last year and have kept it up for the most part of a year. It’s grown and went through some face lifts but I’m happy with what I’m doing here (it’s more personal than anything else I’m doing right now) and I plan to keep it up in the new year.

What I Watched

Moana: My review for Moana is here and I really enjoyed it. From beginning to end, it was cute!

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life: I’ve been looking forward to this ever since I found out we were getting it and while I enjoyed it as a whole, I was disappointed too. I’ll be writing up a review of it that will go up next week so be on the look out for that. 🙂

Teen Wolf: It’s the last season for my favorite TV werewolves and supernatural friends and they’re really packing a punch with everything going on. I’m probably loving the hell out of everything because my ship is finally sailing loud and proud!! I have been in Stydia heaven for three weeks now. Ha!

gif set credits

Started from the bottom, now we here. 🙂

This is me right now:

I’m Beyonce, of course. Ha! I’ve waited 6 seasons for Lydia Martin to stop messing around and get her man. Looks like it’s our turn. Yay!!

What I Listened To

Moana Soundtrack: I’ve been listening to this one mostly because of my 7 year old nephew Luke (who I’ve been spending a lot of time with lately) and Brenna. Luke came to work with me last week and wanted to listen to it for 3 hours and we did. He sang his bootleg version (wrong lyrics) of every song at the top of his lungs…AT MY OFFICE! He’s lucky everyone thought he was cute. Ha!

Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic Album: This album dropped a couple of weeks ago and I haven’t listened to much else since. I’m loving every song, the feel good vibe and just Bruno Mars in general. Luke has also been heard singing the following lyrics from Versace of the Floor, “Let’s just kiss til we’re naked, baby” Ummm…yikes. Ha!

What I Got

What I Loved

sticker-stash

Planner Stickers. The entire month of November was filled with me trying to find my happy place again with all things Happy Planner. Toward the end of the month, I started getting into the bullet journal videos. I am completely inspired for next year. Since I’m now much of an artist (I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler), I’m drawn to the sticker sets that are just too cute for words. I’ve browsed Etsy more in the last month than anything else, except probably YouTube and I’ve bought so many stickers and stickers sets that I’m going to starve since I’m spending all of my lunch money but I can’t help it. I love this crap.

There you have it, folks. The month that was November 2016 for me. How was your month? What are you watching, listening and loving these days?
