Top Ten Tuesday: Changes in My Reading

Posted November 19, 2019 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday started over at The Broke and the Bookish back in 2010 but has moved over to That Artsy Girl. Each week, a topic is chosen and participants share their top ten lists on their blogs or if you don’t have a blog, you can leave your lists in the comment section of your favorite book blogs.

This week’s topic is:

Changes In My Reading Life (Maybe you like different genres or topics, maybe you read faster than you used to, maybe you only like standalones now)

So this week’s topic is the topic mentioned above but that was too hard. I couldn’t think of 10 things that changed for me over the years, in my reading life. So I changed the topic to meet my needs. Ha. Instead of sharing 10 things that have changed over the years for me, I’m going to list 10 books that I never would have read back in the day. When I first started reading romance, I read a lot of historicals. I’d say that for the first year or so, all I read were historicals and the contemporaries that Judith McNaught had released back then. I read everything by Julie Garwood, Judith McNaught, Johanna Lindsey. It wasn’t until the next couple of years that I started to really get into contemporary romances. Once I started reading and enjoying contemporary romances, for me, I never went back. Contemporary romance remains my favorite genre of romance to read. But back then? I wouldn’t have touched a paranormal romance. Urban Fantasy? Yeah right, that would have never happened. Steampunk? Hahaha, yeah..no. It took Holly years to get me to read most of the books on this list but that is the biggest change in my reading life…I now read a lot more paranormal and urban fantasy books. I enjoy them and don’t see that changing any time soon.

Here are the books that made my top ten this week. Check it out:

Even so, none of that would have gotten me into trouble if, a few months ago, I hadn’t stood upon a bridge and taken responsibility for the safety of the citizens who lived in our territory. It seemed like the thing to do at the time. It should have only involved hunting down killer goblins, zombie goats, and an occasional troll. Instead, our home was viewed as neutral ground, a place where humans would feel safe to come and treat with the fae.

The reality is that nothing and no one is safe. As generals and politicians face off with the Gray Lords of the fae, a storm is coming and her name is Death.

But we are pack, and we have given our word.

A Madness of Sunshine by Nalini Singh
Releases on December 3, 2019
Publisher: Penguin, Berkley
Genres: Mystery, Suspense, Thriller
Pages: 352
Format: eARC
Source: Netgalley

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh pivots in a new direction with her first mainstream thriller that will be sure to keep readers on their toes.

Anahera Rawiri left New Zealand at twenty-one, fleeing small-town poverty and the ghosts of her childhood with no plans to look back. But eight years later, she returns, seeking familiarity as respite from the shattered remains of her new life. And despite the changes brought on by a bump in tourism–the shiny new welcome sign at the town line and a decidedly less shiny new police presence–Golden Cove appears much as it ever was: a small settlement on the savage West Coast of the South Island, populated by all the remembered faces and set against a backdrop of lush greenery, jagged cliffs, and crashing waves.

Detective Will Gallagher knows all about ghosts; his own chased him out of a promising career in Christchurch, landing him as the sole cop in a quaint town where his most pressing concerns are petty theft and the occasional drunk. When Golden Cove resident Miri Hinewai goes out for a run and fails to return, Will finds himself heading up a missing person’s search that rapidly escalates into an official investigation after this case is connected with similar ones from the past. As an outsider, Will begins to rely on Anahera’s knowledge of the area and its residents to help him delve into Golden Cove’s secrets, and to determine whether it shelters something far more dangerous than just an unforgiving landscape.

Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings #1) by Nalini Singh

Format: eBook

Nalini Singh dives into a world torn apart by a powerful race with phenomenal powers of the mind-and none of the heart.

In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation” – the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was…

Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion – and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities – or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Still Need to Read

Posted November 12, 2019 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday started over at The Broke and the Bookish back in 2010 but has moved over to That Artsy Girl. Each week, a topic is chosen and participants share their top ten lists on their blogs or if you don’t have a blog, you can leave your lists in the comment section of your favorite book blogs.

This week’s topic is:

Books By My Favorite Authors That I Still Need to Read

I’m going off-topic this week because the real topic is something that I don’t use, ever. I’m a digital reader so I don’t use bookmarks and I don’t have any favorite bookmarks to share so instead of doing that topic, today I’ll be listing the top ten books that I still haven’t read…by my favorite authors. It’s weird, right? I always thought that I would read every single book that my favorite authors have written and while that’s true for some of my favorite authors, it’s not true for all of them. This post is dedicated to those authors. I’m putting myself on blast and I’m okay with that.

Here are the books that made my top ten this week. Check it out:

When the major Chicago daily where she works insists she writes an expose about her roguish father, Sophie refuses, quits her job, and goes to work at a small newspaper. Far from her onetime high-powered crime beat, she now covers local personalities such as the quirky winner of several area 5K runs whose trademark is goofy red socks.

That red socks-with Sophie’s business card neatly tucked inside-are practically all that’s found after runner William Harrington is killed near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, seemingly the victim of a brutal death by a polar bear. The Alaska cops want to know why Harrington carried Sophie’s card. With an unerring nose for a good story, she heads north.

What Sophie doesn’t realize is that on her journey from Chicago to Prudhoe Bay, danger follows in her wake. After one attempt on her life, she’s been assigned brash but sexy Jack MacAlister as a bodyguard by the cautious FBI. Amid great peril and deadly intrigue in the unforgiving Alaskan terrain, she and Jack form an uneasy alliance sparked with sensual attraction. But they will soon be fighting more than their growing passion for each other. To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life: a quaint house on an island off Seattle’s coast, a thriving dog-training school, and a challenging volunteer job performing canine search and rescue. Not to mention her three intensely loyal Labs. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare.

Several years ago, she was the only survivor of a serial killer — a madman who stalked and abducted young women, strangled them, and left them buried with a red scarf on their bodies. As authorities were closing in on the Red Scarf Killer, he shot and killed Fiona’s cop fiancé and his K-9 partner.

On Orcas Island, Fiona has found the peace and solitude she needed to rebuild her life. Yet all that changes on the day Simon Doyle barrels up her drive, desperate for her help. He’s the reluctant owner of an out-of-control puppy, foisted upon him by his mother. Jaws has eaten through Simon’s house, and he’s at his wit’s end.

To Fiona, Jaws is nothing she can’t handle. Simon is another matter. A newcomer to Orcas, he’s a rugged and intensely private artist, known for creating exquisite furniture. Simon never wanted a puppy, and he most definitely doesn’t want a woman. Besides, the lanky redhead is not his type. But tell that to the laws of attraction.

As Fiona embarks on training Jaws and as Simon begins to appreciate both dog and trainer, the past tears back into Fiona’s life. A copycat killer has emerged out of the shadows, a man whose bloodlust has been channeled by a master with one motive: to reclaim the woman who slipped out of his hands.

And even at ten, Miranda knew she would love him forever.

But the years that followed were as cruel to Turner as they were kind to Miranda. She is as intriguing as the viscount boldly predicted on that memorable day—while he is a lonely, bitter man, crushed by a devastating loss.
