The Wednesday Five: Dramas Featuring Lawyers

Posted July 6, 2022 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

I’m a list person. I have a list for every single thing in my life from a to-do list, a list of books that I want to read, a running shopping list, and in the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing different k-entertainment lists that I’ve been keeping track of. You’ll be seeing my top 5 lists of stuff like my current celebrity crushes, my favorite k-drama female protagonists, my favorite k-drama male protagonists, my to-be-watched k-dramas, and you know, stuff like that.

This week’s Wednesday Five will feature Dramas that Feature Lawyers. I’m a sucker for a good lawyer drama. I love watching court scenes, seeing cases from beginning to end, and piecing everything together right alongside the lawyers in the show. Whether it’s one case throughout an entire season or a different case every episode, I’m here for it all. Here’s a list of my favorite dramas that feature lawyers.

1. Suits

My Drama List | Netflix
Starring: Jang Dong Gun, Park Hyung Shik, Jin Hee Kyung

I was a huge fan of the American Suits so I enthusiastically jumped into the Korean one. The Korean Suits didn’t let me down either. It was non-stop legal action with characters that I came to love so much. I love me some Park Hyung Shik so seeing him in another drama (there aren’t that many of them right now) and seeing him play the Korean Mike Ross was just *chefs kiss*. He played the part well and gah, this show was so damn good.

2. Juvenile Justice

My Drama List | Netflix
Starring: Kim Hye Soo, Kim My Yeol, Lee Sung Min

This drama was action-packed and kept me at the edge of my seat with each episode. I binge-watched in a couple of days. The cases were interesting, at the same time that they were hard to get through because some of these kids were pretty wild. I liked Eun Seok and her team was a compelling bunch that I was rooting for from beginning to end. It was hard to read Eun Seok at times but I knew that whatever she went through was something pretty heavy and every decision she made, she didn’t make lightly. She was tough and she was a hard worker and she made this show a fantastic ride.

3. Law School

My Drama List | Netflix
Starring: Kim Myung Min, Kim Bum, Ryu Hye Young

I really liked this show. I saw some folks online say that it dragged and was slow in places but not for me. I loved the class of law school kids and I loved how they were each super different but fleshed-out characters that brought the story they were telling in this show to life. I really came to love them and wanted to be part of their squad as well. My favorite character was Ye Seul and man was her character put through the wringer. She was brave and she was strong and her character and her story stayed with me long after I finished the drama. This was a solid drama that I highly recommend.

4. Suspicious Partner

My Drama List | Viki
Starring: Ji Chang Wook, Nam Ji Hyun, Choi Tae Joon

It’s been a while since I watched this drama but oh man do I remember how much I loved it. When I first started watching Korean dramas back in 2020, I was a stickler for watching the 16-episode dramas that were plentiful. Watching a drama with more than that didn’t happen until this show. This show has 40 episodes and I watched every single one gleefully. I loved the romance in this one and I loved seeing Ji Wook and Bong Hee in action. They were well matched and made this lawyer show such a good one.

5. Extraordinary Attorney Woo

My Drama List | Netflix
Starring: Park Eun Bin, Kang Tae Oh, Kang Ki Young

This is a new show that is still releasing episodes every week. There are only two episodes out so far but oh man, those episodes are good ones. This lawyer, Woo Young Woo, is on the autistic spectrum and she’s smart and she’s interesting and I am absolutely thrilled to be watching this show for the first time. I’m enjoying it a lot and can’t wait for more.

What are some of your favorite dramas that feature lawyers?

Eye Candy Friday: Go Yeon Woo

Posted August 21, 2020 by Rowena in Features | 2 Comments

Eye Candy Friday is something that I’ve been doing since I first started my personal blog way back in 2003. That first personal blog is long gone but I’ve never really grown out of the eye candy phase. I’m always up for some eye candy. Whether it’s a character from a book (male or female, I don’t discriminate), a character from a movie or TV Show, if I loved them and want to gush about how much I loved them, you’ll find them here. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

This week, I’m featuring Park Hyung Sik as Go Yeon Woo from the Korean Drama, Suits. I was an avid watcher of the American Suits so when I found out that Park Hyung Sik, who I am extremely fond of, plays the Mike Ross character for the Korean Drama, I was sold. I had to find it and I had to watch it and boy am I oh so glad that I did. I completely adored the American Mike Ross. His character was pretty damn awesome and I just really, really loved him but my love for American Mike Ross doesn’t hold a candle to my love for Korean Mike Ross. Sure, I love them both but I think I love Korean Mike Ross a smidge more because I don’t remember ugly crying in the American Suits as much as I did in the Korean one. And Park Hyung Sik’s portrayal of the character was a huge reason. He was just…the best and that is why he is this week’s Eye Candy Friday.

You’re welcome. Until next week, enjoy.

The Weekly Recap (148)

Posted July 27, 2020 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

This week has been one heck of a week. Exactly one week from finding out that my cousin’s husband died from COVID-19 and that my cousin herself was recovering from COVID-19, we found out that my best friend’s uncle died from COVID-19 too. That’s three cases that are near and dear to me. This shit is real, no matter how much the naysayers say it isn’t. It’s really frustrating to me to see all of these Facebook posts about COVID-19 being a hoax and we shouldn’t be forced to wear masks out in public because when the hell did all of these guys become doctors and nurses? Where did they get their medical degree from? Wear a damn mask or stay your ass home. Pick one.

My nephew Chase turned 18 on Saturday and poor thing, nobody was here to celebrate his becoming an adult with him. Just all of us old folks. So his birthday green wall were with his family but none of his buddies in his family were here. They’re all in Colorado and Utah. He’s trying real hard to get himself to Utah but unfortunately for him, it looks like he won’t be going up until we all leave for our family vacation in two weeks. Still, happiest of birthdays to Chase. He’s one of the good ones and he finished his Eagle Scout project so he’s officially an Eagle Scout. All of the blankets were finished and delivered and his Scout book is complete so he can move to Utah for school with the knowledge that he wrapped everything up here in California.

That’s about it on the personal front so let’s get into what I’ve gotten into this week…

What I’m Currently Watching

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay
Abyss

I was a bit busier this weekend than I normally am, so I still haven’t watched this weeks episodes of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay though I will be taking care of that today. I’m probably watching it when this post goes live and after last week’s episodes, I’m super anxious to get them watched. This show is so stinkin’ good.

I will also be starting Abyss today too. My girl Strong Woman Do Bong Soon is in this show and I’m low key interested because I’ve been seeing such great reviews of this show so I’m going to start it after I finish this week’s eps of It’s Okay to Be Okay. Wish me luck.

What I Watched

Suits | 4.5 out of 5
Be With You | 4.25 out of 5
W | 4.5 out of 5
Touch Your Heart | 3.5 out of 5

My favorite watch of the week goes to Suits. Even though I watched the American Suits from beginning to end and the Korean Suits was a remake of it, I still really enjoyed the slight differences that the Korean Suits made. I liked the American Harvey and Donna but Korean Mike Ross was the bomb. He absolutely made this show so much better than I was expecting. His Rachel was pretty awesome too. What surprised me with Korean Suits was how much more invested I was in the everyday business of the show. The romances were pretty much background noise to everything else going on but the main romance that we got was super sweet and though it ended on a hopeful note, I still appreciated having it included in the show. Korean Mike and Rachel were a great couple!

My least favorite watch of the week is one that I enjoyed but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the others that I watched. It was a bit on the cheesy side and the female lead was super extra and ditzy and I rolled my eyes so many different times throughout the entire season. That show is Touch Your Heart. I watched this show because I really enjoyed both of the main leads secondary romance in Goblin so I was happy to see them in their own show, front and center. Like I said, this was good just not as good as the others.

The Weekly Recap (147)

Posted July 20, 2020 by Rowena in Features | 6 Comments

The Weekly Recap is a weekly feature on the blog where I recap my week in books, in movies, and in TV Shows. If you’re ever curious about what I’ve been up to, these are the posts for you.

It’s been a pretty quiet week for me since Brenna’s been in Colorado for the summer and I don’t have anyone annoying me at every turn. It’s been nice. LOL. I also had some time to catch up with my siblings on Friday with my sister from Vegas in town. We received some bad news about my cousin’s husband, who died from covid-19 this week so that was a bummer. It’s amazing to me that people are pissed about having to wear masks in public here in California. SMH.

Anyway, I didn’t do much but watch Korean Dramas this week but it was still a good week.

Crazy Rich Asians meets Gossip Girl by way of Jenny Han in this knock-out debut about a Korean American teen who is thrust into the competitive, technicolor world of K-pop, from Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of one of the most influential K-pop girl groups of all time, Girls Generation.
What would you give for a chance to live your dreams?

For seventeen-year-old Korean American Rachel Kim, the answer is almost everything. Six years ago, she was recruited by DB Entertainment—one of Seoul’s largest K-pop labels, known for churning out some of the world’s most popular stars. The rules are simple: Train 24/7. Be perfect. Don’t date. Easy right?

Not so much. As the dark scandals of an industry bent on controlling and commodifying beautiful girls begin to bubble up, Rachel wonders if she’s strong enough to be a winner, or if she’ll end up crushed… Especially when she begins to develop feelings for K-pop star and DB golden boy Jason Lee. It’s not just that he’s charming, sexy, and ridiculously talented. He’s also the first person who really understands how badly she wants her star to rise.

Get ready as Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of Korea’s most famous girl group, Girls Generation, takes us inside the luxe, hyper-color world of K-pop, where the stakes are high, but for one girl, the cost of success—and love—might be even higher. It’s time for the world to see: this is what it takes to SHINE.

I didn’t get any reading done this week. A couple of pages at most but I’m liking what I’m reading so far in Shine by Jessica Jung. Those K Pop stars are no joke and their schedules and training are intense. I’m really interested in seeing where this story takes us. I just need to make time to read.

What I’m Currently Watching

It’s Okay to Not be Okay (2020)
Suits (2018)

This week’s episodes of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay were emotionally packed and I ugly cried through both of them. I am really, really loving this show and both Seo Ye Ji and Kim Soo Hyun did such an amazing job engaging my emotions with their acting skills that I am so here for the both of them. I cannot wait to see where the rest of the season takes us but if the first part of the season is any indication, it’s going to be a crazy ride that I am fully on board with.

I started the Korean version of Suits last night and I am super duper excited about it. I adored the American version of this show and the Korean version stars my #3 boo thang, Park Hyun Sik. I completely adored him in Strong Woman, Do Bong Soon and Juror 8 so when I saw that he was on the Korean version of Suits, I knew that I had to find the show and watch it wherever I could. I’m so glad that it’s on Netflix. I’m on episode 5 and so far, I’m really enjoying it. It’s very familiar to the American version but with its own Korean charm and I love me some Park Hyun Sik so I’m all in.

What I Watched

Cheese in the Trap (2016) | 2.5 out of 5
My First First Love (2019) | 4.25 out of 5
My First First Love 2 (2019) | 4.5 out of 5

This week was a good week in K Dramas for me….with the exception of Cheese in the Trap. That show started off so well for me and then it went downhill and kept right on going downhill until it ended and I was like WTF? Wasn’t a big fan of that of that one.

I did really enjoy My First First Love and My First First Love 2. I need to watch more shows and movies with Ji Soo in it. He’s such a delight.

TV Tuesday (1)

Posted August 15, 2017 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

I watch a lot of TV. Like, a lot a lot of TV. I also have a lot of opinions about the shows that I’m watching so each week (when I remember to do them), I’ll be talking about a few of the shows that I’m watching.

What I Watched

Game of Thrones: Out of all of the shows that I watch, I think I’m most obsessed with this one. Everything that we’ve been working toward from Season 1 is finally happening and each week, it’s non-stop for me. I’m loving this season so much. I’m loving the chemistry between Jon and Daenerys, I’m loving the Stark reunions and I’m anxious for Little Finger to be offed already. There’s so much goodness going on right now that I don’t even know where to start. I loved this week’s episode too. So good!

Animal Kingdom: A couple of weeks ago, I was watching old clips of the show, Felicity. I was in my Ben and Felicity feels and Animal Kingdom came onto my radar because that’s the show that Scott Speedman is currently working on so I watched the first episode and I’ve been hooked ever since. It took me a few days to watch the entire season 1 and then catch up to where the show is now and every week since I’ve been hooked to my seat. This show is addicting and it’s bad and it reminds me of Sons of Anarchy and I love it.

I started this show because of Scott Speedman but I stayed for Ben Robson. Holy hot damn, that man is beautiful.

Younger: This show is always all of the Tumblrs that I follow so I wanted to check it out. I’ve been shipping Nico Tortorella’s character with Hilary Duff’s character since before I started watching the show. LOL. Now that I’m watching the show…I’m still shipping them and I don’t give a damn that it’s not the preferred ship. I don’t even care that Hilary Duff’s character is besties with Nico’s character’s ex-girlfriend and that her hooking up with him is considered against girl code. I’m just sitting over here, waving my Josh and Kelsey flag, waiting for them to fall in love. Ha!

gif credits

Suits: I’ve got to be honest, I love this show. I’ve been a huge supporter of this show since the first season but I have been completely underwhelmed by this season. I’m just not as amped up as I used to be with these characters. The whole Donna and Harvey thing is pissing me off because dude…Harvey and the therapist came out of freaking nowhere. You can’t tell me that he isn’t in love with Donna because he damn well is and the way that he’s been acting all season long makes me want to punch him at every turn. Mike’s character, ugh. Rachel hit it on the nose this week when she said, “What does your word even mean anymore?” Get your shit together, Mike! Then there’s Louis. Freaking Louis. He’s in a bad way and it’s painful to watch him every week lose his shit over the stupidest of things. I just need this show to get better already.

What TV Shows are you watching and loving (or hating) this week? Do you watch any of the shows that I watch? What did you think of this week’s episodes of any of the shows listed above?
