The Monthly Recap: February 2019

Posted March 12, 2019 by Rowena in Books, Features | 2 Comments

It’s been a long couple of weeks for me. Lots of family stuff, on top of some work stuff going on that just has kept me busy and that is the reason why this post is coming to you guys so late. I’ve also been in a bit of a blog slump as well. This month’s recap is mostly going to be a bookish one, I think I’m going to move this post to a more bookish one and leave the personal recap to another post. These posts are really long with just the book stuff so I’m going to separate these for the time being. Now, let’s get to the bookish goodness, shall we?

My favorite read of the month goes to Huge Deal (21 Wall Street #3) by Lauren Layne because Kennedy and Kate were the bomb and I couldn’t get enough of their story. My least favorite read goes to Bad Reputation (Bad Bachelors #2) by Stefanie London. Honestly, that whole series left a bad taste in my mouth but the romance in the first book saved the entire book for me, whereas this book just pissed me off left and right and that continued on in the third book before I just closed that book for good and never went back to it. Gah.

The Monthly Recap: January 2019

Posted February 5, 2019 by Rowena in Books, Features | 8 Comments

I can’t remember doing much of anything outside of Brenna’s basketball, book club and a spontaneous girls dinner with my friends. I also remember my car being in the shop and having to pay much more than I anticipated spending to fix that but all is well, my bills are all up to date and I survived so I can’t complain too much. Here’s what my month looked like in books…

My favorite read from January goes to It Takes Two by Jenny Holiday. Wendy and Noah were such a great couple and their story had me laughing and then crying. I just adored seeing them come together and couldn’t wait to jump into the next book in that series. Jenny Holiday is doing contemporary romance right. Love her stuff. My least favorite read of the month goes to The Wrong Game by Kandi Steiner. I was expecting something a lot lighter than what we got in this book and the heroine’s immature game really tainted my enjoyment, so much so that in the end, I just felt a whole lot of meh for the book.

The Monthly Recap: December 2018

Posted January 8, 2019 by Rowena in Features | 8 Comments

What I Did
December was for Christmas and then New Year’s Eve. This year, Bren, my Dad and I were on our own for Christmas so we really just lazed around and enjoyed having the house to ourselves. No cleaning up after a million people. No waiting around for everyone to leave so that you can crash. Just the three of us arguing over what we’re going to eat and binge-watching Hart of Dixie and golf. On the Sunday before Christmas, my sister Delene and I, along with our kids went to Church to watch my Dad sing in the Ward Choir and…
The choir is sitting up on stage, facing the congregation so if you’re sitting up there, the congregation can see everything you’re doing. My Dad and my friend’s Dad are probably worse than little Primary kids. They were messing around all throughout Sacrament, laughing it up, making faces and all I could do was shake my head. That freaking old man. They were making faces at the back of the speakers back and heavy sighing during the prayers and just making everyone laugh. After Sacrament, I tell him that he needs to be more reverent during Sacrament and he told me to shut up. LOL. Caiden came down for another visit to his California home and it was nice to have him around for a little bit. He only stayed for almost a week but hey, I’ll take what I can get. It’ll probably be April before we see him again and we’ll be in Utah instead of him coming to California and I am A-Okay with that. For New Year’s Eve, I stayed in and binge watched the heck out of Game of Thrones. I’m going to re-watch the entire series before it comes back on with new episodes in April. I’m back to hating Joffrey but surprisingly, I don’t hate Sansa with this viewing. I’ve hated her throughout all of my other viewings but not this one. I still don’t want her to Jon though.

The Monthly Recap: November 2018

Posted December 4, 2018 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

November was a pretty busy month for me and my family. Birthdays, holidays and a missionary farewell that we had to prepare for but man did I have a great November. Lots of family around and even though I got into it with one of my doctors, I still had a great ass November.
What I Did
The month of November is a very popular birthday month in my family. We celebrated many birthdays this month, mine included. I’m a year older guys and I feel every single one of those years. LOL. This month was also for celebrating Cheridan as she prepared to leave the fam for a year and a half to serve her mission in San Jose. The week leading up to when she left for the MTC was spent as a family, doing whatever she wanted. We saw Ralph Breaks the Internet (pictured above), we rode bikes on the beach, did karaoke as a family, got our roll bounce on at the skating rink and we ate all of her favorite things. So, as you can see, we had a really good time doing what we always do together, laugh and clown each other. Thanksgiving for the family was here in L.A. since everyone was in town for Cheridan’s farewell. We had lots of food, lots of people, and a big ass mess when all was said and done. Thank goodness there’s a million of us to clean up. Haha, we had fun though. Cheridan is at the MTC in Mexico City right now, learning how to speak Spanish so that when she gets to San Jose in January, she’ll know how to speak Spanish like a pro (haha, or well, you know what I mean). She gave a great farewell talk on the day of her farewell and it was well attended by family far and near, as you can tell from the picture above. That picture was taken right after Sacrament meeting and we’re missing Chloe and Markus who had to rush home to check on the palusami that Markus and the boys made for our Sunday dinner. Team Wilson Gang rolls deep.
What I Read
1. Sleepover by Serena Bell (eARC) | 4 out of 5 2. Highlander Most Wanted (Montgomery’s & Armstrongs #2) by Maya Banks (Audiobook) | 4.25 out of 5 3. Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson #5) by Patricia Briggs (eBook) | 4.25 out of 5 4. Wait for It by Mariana Zapata (eBook) | 4.5 out of 5 5. Archangel’s Blade (Guild Hunter #4) by Nalini Singh (Audiobook) | 3.25 out of 5 6. Mornings on Main by Jodi Thomas (eBook) | 3 out of 5 7. Fall (VIP #3) by Kristen Callihan (eBook) | 4.25 out of 5 8. My Best Friend’s Ex (Beta Brothers #1) by Hazel Kelly (eBook) | 3.5 out of 5 9. Friends with Benefits (Beta Brothers #2) by Hazel Kelly (eBook) | 4 out of 5 10. Save the Date by Carrie Aarons (eBook) | 2 out of 5 11. My Favorite Half Night Stand by Christina Lauren (eARC) | 4 out of 5 12. Ache for You (Slow Burn #3) by J.T. Geissinger (Audiobook) | 1 out of 5
My favorite read of the month goes to Wait for It by Mariana Zapata because I adored the romance, the characters and the author’s writing style. She hasn’t disappointed me yet and I’m looking forward to reading more of her books in the new year. My least favorite book is the last book that I read last month. Ache for You by J.T. Geissinger. The heroine ruined this book for me because she was a whiny little asshole who jumped to every conclusion under the sun. It was annoying as hell and even in the end, she wouldn’t give the hero the benefit of the doubt and I wanted to smack the shit out of her.

The Monthly Recap: October 2018

Posted November 6, 2018 by Rowena in Features | 2 Comments

November is here guys, can you believe it? It’s my birthday month and Thanksgiving month and a time to be grateful to be alive. I hope November treats you all well but before I move on to a new month, let’s take a look back at what October brought for me.
What I Did
October was a relatively quiet month for me. Well, Caiden was here for a week and that was a lot of fun but for the most part, I stayed close to home and relaxed. I did go to a Dodgers game against the Atlanta Braves (we won!) and it was Kershaw Day so Clayton Kershaw pitched for 8 full innings before Kenley Jansen came out to close the game and ice the win. It was a lot of fun with a lot of die-hard Dodgers fans enjoying a ballgame together. There were lots of high fives, excited cheers and booing for the opponent going on and I loved it all. We sat in the All-You-Can-Eat Pavillion and had all the Dodger dogs we could eat (we only had 1). Grandal hit a home run in our section but it was a few rows in front of us so we didn’t catch it or anything. October was also for the Primary Program. It’s one of my favorite Church days of the year. The Primary kids put on a program each year in October and the kids get up to recite their parts and sing songs and it never fails to make me cry. We had two kids participating in the Primary Program and it was their first time being in it but both Ahbrey and Brooke did so well on their parts. They recited it in Samoan and they were so scared but they did it!! We celebrated with brunch afterward and that’s always a good time. Halloween was the same as every year. We had chili and lots of food, the kids went trick or treating with the men while the ladies cooked and watched the Lakers game. It was a fun and relaxing month and I read some books!
What I Read
1. Rebel Hard (Hard Play #2) by Nalini Singh (eARC) | 4 out of 5 2. Fight or Flight by Samantha Young (eARC) | 4 out of 5 3. Archangel’s Consort (Guild Hunter #3) by Nalini Singh (Audiobook) | 4 out of 5 4. Shadow and Ice (War of Gods #1) by Gena Showalter (eARC) | 2.5 out of 5 5. Phoenix Unbound (Fallen Empire #1) by Grace Draven (eBook) | 4 out of 5 6. Fireworks (True North #6) by Sarina Bowen (eARC) | 4.25 out of5 7. Never Seduce a Scot (The Montgomery’s & Armstrongs #1) by Maya Banks (Audiobook) | 4.75 out of 5 8. The Other Miss Bridgerton (Rokesbys #3) by Julia Quinn (eARC) | 4.25 out of 5 9. Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson #3) by Patricia Briggs (eBook) | 4.5 out of 5 10. Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson #4) by Patricia Briggs (eBook) | 4 out of 5
My favorite read of the month goes to Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks. It’s the first book in the Montgomery’s & Armstrongs series and holy cow it hit me with every single feel in my body. I loved the story, the romance and I came to love both families so much. It was hard to see it in the beginning but I came around. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. My least favorite read of the month goes to Shadow & Ice by Gena Showalter. It was slow going and I didn’t connect with the characters as much as I hoped I would. I probably won’t continue the series. *shrugs*
