The Monthly Recap: October 2018

Posted November 6, 2018 by Rowena in Features | 2 Comments

November is here guys, can you believe it? It’s my birthday month and Thanksgiving month and a time to be grateful to be alive. I hope November treats you all well but before I move on to a new month, let’s take a look back at what October brought for me.

What I Did

October was a relatively quiet month for me. Well, Caiden was here for a week and that was a lot of fun but for the most part, I stayed close to home and relaxed. I did go to a Dodgers game against the Atlanta Braves (we won!) and it was Kershaw Day so Clayton Kershaw pitched for 8 full innings before Kenley Jansen came out to close the game and ice the win. It was a lot of fun with a lot of die-hard Dodgers fans enjoying a ballgame together. There were lots of high fives, excited cheers and booing for the opponent going on and I loved it all. We sat in the All-You-Can-Eat Pavillion and had all the Dodger dogs we could eat (we only had 1). Grandal hit a home run in our section but it was a few rows in front of us so we didn’t catch it or anything.

October was also for the Primary Program. It’s one of my favorite Church days of the year. The Primary kids put on a program each year in October and the kids get up to recite their parts and sing songs and it never fails to make me cry. We had two kids participating in the Primary Program and it was their first time being in it but both Ahbrey and Brooke did so well on their parts. They recited it in Samoan and they were so scared but they did it!! We celebrated with brunch afterward and that’s always a good time.

Halloween was the same as every year. We had chili and lots of food, the kids went trick or treating with the men while the ladies cooked and watched the Lakers game. It was a fun and relaxing month and I read some books!

What I Read

10. Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson #4) by Patricia Briggs (eBook) | 4 out of 5

My favorite read of the month goes to Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks. It’s the first book in the Montgomery’s & Armstrongs series and holy cow it hit me with every single feel in my body. I loved the story, the romance and I came to love both families so much. It was hard to see it in the beginning but I came around. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

My least favorite read of the month goes to Shadow & Ice by Gena Showalter. It was slow going and I didn’t connect with the characters as much as I hoped I would. I probably won’t continue the series. *shrugs*

The Monthly Recap: September 2018

Posted October 16, 2018 by Rowena in Features | 6 Comments

September came and went a lot faster than I was anticipating. Lots of stuff happened but the most important thing that happened was our celebrating baby Jax’s first birthday. Jax is my older brother’s first grandchild and he is the apple of his papa’s eye. My brother is such a great grandfather and Jax loves him so. Jax is such a little cutie and an adorably good little boy and our family adore him. His first birthday was a lot of fun.

Brenna and Makenna’s pre-season for basketball has also started in September and they played in their first basketball tournament of the season, it was about an hour away and I didn’t make it out to the tournament but my brother Pete went and said that though the team isn’t as good as they were last year, Brenna and Makenna didn’t play nearly as well as they should have so it was hard to get a good feel on how they’ll do this year. I guess we’ll just wait and see.

Dodgers are playing in the National League Championship Series and I’m rooting them on from wherever I am when the games start. At home or at work.

My best friend had surgery to remove her thyroid and I was able to hang out with her and her Mom to make sure that all was well and to drive them around wherever they needed since Therese was in a lot of pain and her Mom was scared to drive around town. I was happy to be there for them both because Therese’s Mom is one of my favorite people in the world.

September was a good month for me personally but it was also good for me in books. Let’s move on to the books…

What I Read

1. For the Dukes Eyes Only (School for Dukes #2) by Lenora Bell (eARC) | 4.25 out of 5
2. Untamed (MacKinnon’s Rangers #2) by Pamela Clare (eBook) | 4 out of 5
3. Beyond the Night (The Heros of New Vegas #1) by Colleen Gleason (eBook) | 4 out of 5
4. Say You’ll Stay by Corinne Michaels (Audiobook) | 1 out of 5
5. The Lion’s Lady (Crown’s Spies #1) by Julie Garwood (re-read) (eBook) | 4.25 out of 5
6. Guardian Angel (Crown’s Spies #2) by Julie Garwood (re-read) (eBook) | 4.25 out of 5
7. Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe by Jenny Colgan (Audiobook) | 2.75 out of 5
8. Long Shot (Hoops #1) by Kennedy Ryan (eBook) | 4.75 out of 5
9. Block Shot (Hoops #2) by Kennedy Ryan (eBook) | 4 out of 5
10. Seduction of a Highland Lass (McCabe Trilogy #2) by Maya Banks (Audiobook) | 4.75 out of 5
11. The Duke Buys a Bride (The Rogue Files #3) by Sophie Jordan (eBook) | 3 out of 5
12. The Gift (Crown’s Spies #4) by Julie Garwood (eBook) | 4 out of 5
13. Dead Heat (Alpha & Omega #4) by Patricia Briggs (eBook) | 5 out of 5
14. Hot Dad by Whitley Cox (eBook) | 1 out of 5
15. Finding Dandelion (Dearest #2) by Lex Martin (Audiobook) | 3.75 out of 5
16. Burn Bright (Alpha & Omega #5) by Patricia Briggs | 4 out of 5
17. America’s Sweetheart (Real Love #5) by Jessica Lemmon (eARC) | 4 out of 5
18. Never Love a Highlander (McCabe Trilogy #3) by Maya Banks (Audiobook) | 4.75 out of 5
19. Kissing Madeleine (Dearest #3) by Lex Martin (Audiobook) | 4 out of 5

My favorite read of the month goes to Dead Heat by Patricia Briggs but also Seduction of a Highland Lass by Maya Banks. Both books were so good. I cried buckets when listening to Seduction of a Highland Lass. I couldn’t get over how freaking good it was. Alaric and Keeley’s story hit me hard in every feel in my body. With Dead Heat, it was so good to be in Charles and Anna’s world again. I freaking love them both and I loved seeing them work together to figure out who was trying to harm their own. So, so freaking good.

I have two least favorite reads of the month as well. Those books are Hot Dad by Whitley Cox and Say You’ll Stay by Corinne Michaels. Both books pissed me off so I was glad to be done with them once I finished them.

The Monthly Recap: August 2018

Posted September 4, 2018 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

What I Did

August was for hanging out with my best friend Theresa and exercising and we went to our very first City of Los Angeles event and had a blast doing what we do best…eat. We went to the Los Angeles Taco Festival near Downtown L.A. and even though I only ate one taco, it was a damn good taco and I’ve been craving more of it ever since. Now if only we can find where that taco place is. Ha. I also joined a new online book club that I’m enjoying the heck out of so big ups to Nick and Renee for brainstorming that to life. 🙂

22. Getting Schooled by Emma Chase (audiobook)
23. Hot Winter Nights (Heartbreaker Bay #6) by Jill Shalvis (eARC) | 3.75 out of 5

I read 23 books in the entire month of July. That includes audiobooks, re-reads and books that I’ve been meaning to read but never got around to. I think this is the most that I’ve read in a month EVER and man, that makes me happy. I’m shooting for more of the same in September so wish me luck! 🙂

My most anticipated book was a book that doesn’t come out until November but I got it for review now and couldn’t stop myself from reading immediately and that was Diamond Fire by Ilona Andrews. It was a fabulous read and introduction into Catalina as a narrator and I cannot wait for more from her.

My favorite book of the month probably goes to Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren, The Governess Game by Tessa Dare, and When a Duke Loves a Woman by Lorraine Heath. All books were review books and I loved them all.

My least favorite book of the month is the book that I DNF’d. Mr. Grumpy Fake Boyfriend by Jackie Lau. I didn’t connect with anything or anyone so I let it go. It wasn’t for me.

What I Watched on TV

Sharp Objects is a show that I wanted to watch as soon as I found out that Chris Messina was in it. Too bad the show was too weird for me to get past the third episode so I quit it. I’m still watching Suits and surprised at how much I’m enjoying it. I’m even loving the new additions to the show. Good stuff. I’m also watching Take Two and enjoying that still even though it’s pretty cheesy. I really like Rachel Bilson so I’m mainly watching it for her.

What I Listened To

What I Loved

Just like July, what I loved the most in August was having this guy around…
