The Wednesday Five: My Favorite Second Leads

Posted September 22, 2021 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

I’m a list person. I have a list for every single thing in my life from a to-do list, a list of books that I want to read, a running shopping list, and in the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing different k-entertainment lists that I’ve been keeping track of. You’ll be seeing my top 5 lists of stuff like my current celebrity crushes, my favorite k-drama female protagonists, my favorite k-drama male protagonists, my to-be-watched k-dramas, and you know, stuff like that.

This week’s Wednesday Five will feature five of my favorite second leads.

1. Nam Seon Ho from My Country: The New Age

Watching this beautiful man act his ass off made my viewing experience of this drama, all the more pleasurable. This man is fine as hell and his character was much more interesting to me than the first lead. This was the first drama where I was actively cheering for the second lead over the first lead to get the girl. I loved the first lead and felt for him and his hardships but for me, Seon Ho won me over. It was so easy for the viewer to hate Seon Ho because of what we’re given of his character but as the show progresses my love for him grew and grew and grew. I absolutely loved this guy and that is why he’s my top favorite second lead.

2. Kim Jung Hwan from Reply 1988

Man did I adore this guy. I loved his character and how he quietly took care of his loved ones. He wasn’t always easy to understand but he was absolutely always easy to adore. Even though I didn’t cheer for him to get the girl, that didn’t take away from how much I loved him. I loved him, his family, and I loved seeing him care for those around him. His personality was fantastic and though I felt bad for him in the end, I still loved the hell out of him.

3. Han Seo Jun from True Beauty

Han Seo Jun was my introduction to Hwang In Yeop. Even though his character annoyed me in the beginning, he did his very best to turn things around and absolutely did. I loved the hell out of him and my heart for him when things didn’t work for him with the girl. I think he knew that it wasn’t going to end the way that he wanted though. He had so many sweet moments throughout this show and I just loved the hell out of him.

4. Baek In Ho from Cheese in the Trap

This guy was the second second lead that I actively cheered for to get the girl. He deserved her so much but in the end, I didn’t think that she deserved him. He was too good for her and I wanted to punch the girl in the vagina for not seeing the gem that was right in front of her. Man, I loved this guy so much but just take my word for it because the drama itself was trash.

5. Han Ji-Pyeong from The Start Up

Oh man, this was my introduction to Kim Seon Ho and I’m super grateful because holy hot damn I love this guy. He got on my nerves in the show and I wanted him to be more upfront with Dal Mi but I can’t deny that his character appealed to me because the lengths he went to keep his promise melted my heart. His relationship with Dal Mi’s Grandma was such a wholesome ass relationship and I was here for it all. I love love love this guy!

The Wednesday Five: K-Drama Girl Crushes

Posted September 15, 2021 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

I’m a list person. I have a list for every single thing in my life from a to-do list, a list of books that I want to read, a running shopping list, and in the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing different k-entertainment lists that I’ve been keeping track of. You’ll be seeing my top 5 lists of stuff like my current celebrity crushes, my favorite k-drama female protagonists, my favorite k-drama male protagonists, my to-be-watched k-dramas, and you know, stuff like that.

This week’s Wednesday Five will feature my top 5 k-drama girl crushes.

1. Lee Hyeri

Filmography: Reply 1988, My Roommate is a Gumiho, Record of Youth, My Punch Drunk Boxer, Monstrum, When Flowers Bloom I Think of the Moon

Lee Hyeri is my top girl crush right now. I’ve only seen her in two dramas and I’ve never heard her music before but holy cow, the two characters that she played made me a huge fan of her work as an actress. My favorite character of hers is hands down Deok Sun from Reply 1988 but she was fantastic as Lee Dam in My Roommate is a Gumiho as well. She’s a gorgeous woman with great chemistry with all of the actors and actresses that she’s acted with and when she popped up in Record of Youth, I thought she was gorgeous and that was what prompted me to watch Reply 1988. I’m so glad that I did because I hella loved her and Park Bo Gum in that one.

2. Park Bo Young

Filmography: Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Abyss, Oh My Ghostess, On Your Wedding, The Silenced, Doom at Your Service, Concrete Utopia

Bo Young made her way onto my radar in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. I absolutely loved that show and the chemistry between Bo Young and Park Hyung Shik was off the chains good. Because of that show, I’ve been watching her stuff and keeping track of when she’s got new things coming out. I haven’t watched all of her stuff but I do enjoy her acting and think she’s absolutely adorable. I’m a fan of hers and she’s definitely one of my girl crushes.

3. Park So Dam

Filmography: Record of Youth, Cinderella and the Four Knights, A Beautiful Mind, Parasite, Fukuoka, The Silenced

Park So Dam came onto my radar after I watched Parasite. I thought she was spectacular in that movie (she made me feel so many emotions!) and because of that, I watched Record of Youth, Cinderella and the Four Knights and then A Beautiful Mind. I enjoyed all of those shows though some of them ended on notes that made me scratch my head. I really enjoy her acting and her vibe so I’ve been crushing on her lately.

4. Moon Ga Young

Filmography: True Beauty, Recipe for Youth, Find Me in Your Memory, Tempted, Twenty Again, Eclipse

I really enjoyed Moon Ga Young in True Beauty. There were times when I thought she did a lot of stupid shit but overall, I enjoyed her acting and the chemistry she had with Cha Eun Woo. I tried watching Tempted but that was a disaster of the first few episodes so I quit it but I am looking forward to supporting Ga Young in her future projects. She’s great.

5. Kim Go Eun

Filmography: Goblin, Cheese in the Trap, The King: Eternal Monarch, Tune in For Love, Coin Locker Girl, Yumi’s Cell

I love this lady. I watched her in Goblin and thought she was fan-freaking-tastic so I just kept watching her stuff and watching her stuff and watching her stuff. She’s been pretty great in every single thing that I’ve watched her in and I am really looking forward to what else she’ll be doing in the future. I absolutely love her vibe both in her dramas, but also on her social media and photoshoots. She seems like such a sweetheart and I am a big fan of hers. Love this one!

Five K-Drama Actors that I’m Crushing On

Posted July 21, 2021 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

I’m a list person. I have a list for every single thing in my life from a to-do list, a list of books that I want to read, a running shopping list, and in the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing different k-entertainment lists that I’ve been keeping track of. You’ll be seeing my top 5 lists of stuff like my current celebrity crushes, my favorite k-drama female protagonists, my favorite k-drama male protagonists, my to-be-watched k-dramas, and you know, stuff like that.

This week’s Wednesday Five will feature my top 5 k-drama actor crushes.

My tastes in celebrity crushes sure have changed since I was younger. I’ve always had a celebrity crush that my poor best friend, Theresa, had to listen to me gush all over all the damn time. My celebrity crushes used to be like Paul Walker, Justin Timberlake, Jordan Knight from New Kids on the Block, haha and just very American guys. These days, you’ll find me crushing and watching all kinds of Korean dramas because of any one of these guys. Also, my celebrity crush lists when it comes to k-dramas change almost weekly. I discover new k-drama crushes all the time so don’t be surprised if you see another one of these posts with a completely new list of crushes.

So, here’s today’s top 5 list. Here is my list of celebrity k-drama crushes.

Check it out.

1. Park Seo Joon

Filmography: Itaewon Class, She Was Pretty, Fight My Way, What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, Midnight Runners, The Divine Fury

Park Seo Joon was my very first k-drama crush. I watched Itaewon Class in less 24 hours and then proceeded to binge-watch everything that I could get my hands on that starred this fine ass man. I’ve still got some stuff of his to watch but I either can’t find them to watch (legally, anyway) or the storyline isn’t my normal jam so I’ve gotten distracted by something else. I can’t wait for his next project, whether it’s a movie or a drama, because I hella miss watching him in stuff. After months and months of not seeing him in anything new, the little bit that he was in Record of Youth, had me acting like an excited school girl with a crush so seriously, I love this guy.

2. Gong Yoo

Filmography: Goblin, Big, Coffee Prince, Train to Busan, The Suspect, Silenced

While Park Seo Joon was my first k-drama crush, Gong Yoo was my introduction to the world of K-Entertainment. I watched his movie Train to Busan and was like, “Okay, I want more of this. I don’t mind the subtitles and plus, that guy is foine. More of that, please.” And that was that. After discovering k-movies and then after that, k-dramas, I have yet to watch a full American show from beginning to end. So yeah, this guy is responsible for my deep dive into all things Korean entertainment so of course, he’s on my celebrity crush list.

3. Park Hyung Sik

Filmography: Suits, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, The Heirs, Juror 8, Two Lights: Relumino

I’ve been crushing so hard on this guy, ever since watching and LOVING Strong Woman, Do Bong Soon. I thought he was such a great character and his performance was fantastic. I also thought he had great chemistry with Park Bo Young. He’s such a good-looking guy but he’s also a great actor. I loved him in Suits, and I really liked him in Juror 8. From what I saw of the show, he was great in Hwarang and he rocked his long hair wig a lot better than Park Seo Joon did. Haha.

4. Lee Je Hoon

Filmography: Move to Heaven, Taxi Driver, Where Stars Land, Signal, Time to Hunt, Collectors

Lee Je Hoon came onto my radar after watching Time to Hunt and what’s funny is that I hated his character for getting his friends in so much trouble. So when I was looking for a suspense drama to watch and came across Signal, I almost didn’t watch it because I was still mad at him from Time to Hunt. I’m glad that I went ahead and watched Signal because I loved him in there and that show led me to Taxi Drive and Move to Heaven. I have loved him in every single thing that I’ve watched of his and I’m looking for more to jump into. Where Stars Land and Tomorrow with You are on my list.

5. Jang Ki Yong

Filmography: My Roommate is a Gumiho, Search: WWW,My Mister, Born Again, Sweet & Sour, The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos

Jang Ki Yong is my latest k-drama crush. I just recently discovered him when I started My Roommate is Gumiho but I’ve also discovered that he’s been in some dramas that I’ve watched, I just didn’t know who he was and he didn’t play big characters. I can’t believe he was the same guy that I hated in My Mister. He plays the immortal loner role extremely well and I was all out in love with him in every single episode of My Roommate is Gumiho, even when he was being an immortal weirdo. I’m looking forward to digging into his back list as well. Damn, he’s foine as hell!

Five K-Dramas That I Quit Recently

Posted July 14, 2021 by Rowena in Features | 2 Comments

I’m a list person. I have a list for every single thing in my life from a to-do list, a list of books that I want to read, a running shopping list, and in the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing different k-entertainment lists that I’ve been keeping track of. You’ll be seeing my top 5 lists of stuff like my current celebrity crushes, my favorite k-drama female protagonists, my favorite k-drama male protagonists, my to-be-watched k-dramas, and you know, stuff like that.

This week, I’ll be sharing the latest five k-dramas that I quit recently.

I used to be the kind of person who would not DNF anything. From books to movies, and TV shows, if I started it, I would stay loyal to it no matter what. It’s why I finished Dawson’s Creek long after I stopped caring about who was on the show and who everyone ended up with.

Well, those days are long gone. Life is too short to stick it out on things that just aren’t working for you. I’ve been DNF-ing books left and right and I figured that it’s going to be the same for k-dramas. I’m not a huge fan of the beginning of anything. The beginning of books takes too long to introduce characters, plots, and all of that other stuff and it’s the same with k-dramas. I’m always super anxious to get to the middle parts even though I understand that the beginning is needed so I’ve always had a hard time stopping a series.

Let’s get into this week’s top 5 list, shall we?

Five K-Dramas I Quit Recently

1. Sky Castle

Starring: Yeon Jung Ah, Lee Tae Ran, Yoon Se Ah, Oh Na Ra, Kim Seo Hyung, Jung Joon Ho
Year Released: 2018
Where I Watched It: Viki
Will I Go Back and Watch?: Probably Not

I’m not going to lie. I started watching this show because of a Run BTS episode where J Hope, feeling betrayed at all of the lies and acting going on with the other members, says, “Wow, we should all be in Sky Castle”. Now, I’d heard of the show but it just seemed like a Dynasty type of show and that’s not normally my speed but because Jin said that he liked the show (in another Run BTS episode) and J Hope said that he liked it, I checked it out. I got about 10 episodes in before I started getting bored with the apartment politics, the main mean girl in the apartment building, and just all of the dumb drama that the main mean girl in this show kept bringing up just to stay on top. The lengths that they all went through to keep up with the Jones annoyed me so I stopped it for good and I’m probably not going to pick it back up any time soon, if ever. It’s seriously a me thing. I saw and heard that it was a pretty popular show but again, it ain’t my cup of tea so I’ve moved on.

2. Youth of May

Starring: Lee Do Hyun, Go Min Si, Lee Sang Yi, Geum Sae Rok, Oh Man Suk, Uhm Hyo Sub
Year Released: 2021
Where I Watched It: Viki
Will I Go Back and Watch?: Probably Not

I really liked these two characters in some of the other shows that I’ve watched them. I enjoyed both of their characters in Sweet Home and seeing them playing love interests in this show after playing siblings in Sweet Home made me laugh but it didn’t stop me from being excited to watch them both in something new. I’ve always wanted to see Go Min Si in something where she wasn’t playing the mean girl cousin or the selfish piece of shit that she played in Love Alarm so seeing her as the main lead in this one, with an interesting story was one of the things that I looked forward to the most.

However, this show moved really slow for me. I spent more time wanting to watch something else while I was watching this one and after about 6 episodes, I called it quits for good. I’m sure the story picks up and things come together really nicely, but I just couldn’t finish this one out and that bummed me out.

3. So I Married An Anti-Fan

Starring: Choi Tae Joon, Choi Soo Young, Hwang Chan Sung, Han Ji An, Kim Min Kyu, Kim Min Kyo
Year Released: 2021
Where I Watched It: Viki
Will I Go Back and Watch?: Probably Not

I went into this show, not knowing anything about what it was about. I wanted to watch it because I enjoyed Choi Tae Joon so much in Suspicious Partner with Ji Chang Wook and Nam Ji Hyun. He played that role exceptionally well and he’s great to look at so of course, I wanted to support him in his new show. Sucks that I couldn’t stick it out because the actual show itself, just wasn’t for me.

The story, the main female lead, and just that first episode didn’t work for me. I wasn’t a big fan of the set up and the main female girl annoyed the snot out of me so I barely finished the first episode and just…noped right out of it.

4. Encounter

Starring: Park Bo Gum, Song Hye Kyo, Jang Seung Jo, Ko Chang Seok, Shin Jung Keun, Nam Ki Ae
Year Released: 2018
Where I Watched It: Viki
Will I Go Back and Watch?: Probably

I’m a huge Park Bo Gum fan so I was bummed that I only lasted one episode of this one. I think this one suffered from the dreaded beginning info dump and I just wasn’t all that interested in what was going on. I’m pretty sure that it was a mood thing on my part so I’m probably going to go back and finish this, just not now. I want to say that this is the show that Park Bo Gum won an award for but I can’t be sure. In my head, I’m seeing him tearfully accepting his award and thanking Song Joong Ki, who was tearing up as well. Hmm. Anyway, I will say that Park Bo Gum with long hair is…yum.

That man is so good looking and I’m always happy to see him on screen. I can’t wait for him to finish his military duty and come back and make more dramas and movies. I’m ready for more content from him.

5. Reply 1994

Starring: Go Ah Ra, Jung Woo, Yoo Yeon Seok, Kim Sung Kyun, Baro, Min Do Hee
Year Released: 2013
Where I Watched It: Netflix
Will I Go Back and Watch?: Probably Not

I wanted to watch all of the Reply shows after finishing Reply 1988 and…it didn’t work out for me. I wasn’t all that interested in the 1994 after the first couple of episodes. The yelling and the fighting between the two siblings of this show drove me right up the wall. Now, it drove me up the wall in 1988 and was one of the reasons that I didn’t like Sung Bo Ra for the longest time. I felt like she always picked fights for no damn reason so getting more of that in this 1994 Reply show sealed the deal for me. Noped right the fuck out. I couldn’t go through that shit again. Plus, I just wasn’t all that interested in the characters, the boarding house deal so yeah…I probably won’t come back to this one either. There are too many other shows that I’m interested in watching.
