Week in Review (77)

Posted February 5, 2018 by Rowena in Books, Features | 0 Comments

This week was a pretty eventful week for me. I was busy at work and catching up on my shows but I also watched a lot of basketball (are you guys surprised? Ha!). Basketball started with Bren and Ken, who won both of their games this week (first against Harbor College and then Cerritos). Next up was Luke, who scored his first basket of the season on Saturday and his team finally won a game (they’re young…and not that good, haha) and then to close out the week, Meghan and her team beat Arizona Christian at home. That was Vanguard’s best defensive game all season, IMO. They were engaged from the jump and they never let up even though we were down 11 in the first quarter. Lots and lots of fun basketball. Meghan came home with us on Saturday so Sunday morning was for cheap movie time so we went to see Forever My Girl and I enjoyed it. Not as much as the girls did but it was good. We also tried Blaze Pizza for the first time and that was great. We watched The Super Bowl, too and had French Tip Sandwiches and Pasta Salad so I was a happy camper. You can never go wrong with those two things for dinner. Aside from that, I didn’t do much else but enjoy my time with the fam.

What I’m Currently Reading

Week in Review (77)So Over You
by Kate Meader
Series: Chicago Rebels #2
Published by Simon & Schuster, Pocket Star on December 4th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, Romance
Pages: 400
Format: eBook
Source: Purchased
Add It: Goodreads

Three estranged sisters struggle to sustain their late father’s failing hockey franchise in Kate Meader’s sizzling Chicago Rebels series. In this second entry, middle sister Isobel is at a crossroads in her personal and professional lives. But both are about to get a significant boost with the addition of a domineering Russian powerhouse to the Rebels....

Isobel Chase knows hockey. She played NCAA, won Olympic silver, and made it thirty-seven minutes into the new National Women’s Hockey League before an injury sidelined her dreams. Those who can’t, coach, and a position as a skating consultant to her late father’s hockey franchise, the Chicago Rebels, seems like a perfect fit. Until she’s assigned her first job: the man who skated into her heart as a teen and relieved her of her pesky virginity. These days, left-winger Vadim Petrov is known as the Czar of Pleasure, a magnet for puck bunnies and the tabloids alike. But back then... let’s just say his inability to sink the puck left Isobel frustratingly scoreless.

Vadim has a first name that means “ruler,” and it doesn’t stop at his birth certificate. He dominates on the ice, the practice rink, and in the backseat of a limo. But a knee injury has produced a bad year, and bad years in the NHL don’t go unrewarded. His penance? To be traded to a troubled team where his personal coach is Isobel Chase, the woman who drove him wild years ago when they were hormonal teens. But apparently the feeling was not entirely mutual.

That Vadim might have failed to give Isobel the pleasure that was her right is intolerable, and he plans to make it up to her—one bone-melting orgasm at a time. After all, no player can perfect his game without a helluva lot of practice...

This series is shaping up to be such an enjoyable reading adventure for me. I didn’t really love the novella that started everything off but I did enjoy the first book and started this one just as soon as I finished the last book. I’m enjoying these characters, the humor and the romances. I’m looking forward to getting to know Isobel and Vadim a lot better. I knew there was some history between them in Irresistible You so I’m looking forward to digging into their story. I hope to see more of Violet because she’s my favorite. Her and Bren. *sigh*

Week in Review (77)

Posted January 29, 2018 by Rowena in Books, Features | 0 Comments

This week was pretty relaxing but instead of reading a lot of books, I watched a lot of shows. I also drove out to Santa Barbara with my sisters to watch my niece and her team take on a good friend of ours from our club basketball days and her team. Meghan’s team got smashed and Lauren had a great game. Poor Vanguard. Poor Meghan. At least, she got a home cooked meal delivered to her dorm room the next day. Better luck next time, Meg! Now, onto the books…

Week in Review (77)Shot on Gold
by Jaci Burton
Series: Play by Play #14
Published by Penguin, Berkley on February 13th 2018
Genres: Contemporary, Romance
Format: eARC
Source: NetGalley, Publisher

In the new Play-by-Play novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Final Score, opposites attract when a figure skater and hockey player lace up their skates--and go for the gold...

Will "Mad Dog" Madigan is making his second trip to the Winter Games, and he couldn't be happier. Hockey is his life and playing for the U.S. team is a privilege. Then he meets U.S. figure skater Amber Sloane. She's beautiful, ambitious and driven--everything Will desires in a woman. He would love to show Amber how hot life off the ice can be.

Amber has skated her entire life, sacrificing everything in the hopes of one day winning gold. Now she's competing for the third and final time. She intends to win, and nothing's going to get in her way--until she meets Will. He's an irresistible charmer, and before long Amber is wondering if this sexy hockey player is the perfect guy to show her some moves outside the rink.

But after all the medals have been awarded, Will and Amber will have to decide if what they have together is just a fling or a real shot at true love.

I’m looking forward to digging into this book and continuing this series. I hope it’s as good as the last couple of books that I enjoyed from this series. Fingers crossed.

What I Read

Man Hands (Man Hands #1) by Sarina Bowen & Tanya Tby | DNF Brooklynaire (Brooklyn Bruisers #4) by Sarina Bowen | 4.75 out of 5
My favorite read of the week goes to Brooklynaire because that was a damn good romance. It was everything that I hoped it would be and Nate was the hero that I wanted him to be just as Becca was as great as I expected. I love the hell out of this series and this book held up that love. I hope that there will be more books for this series. I never want it to end. On the other hand, I tried to get into Man Hands without much success. I couldn’t get into it so after about a third of the book in, I called it quits. I wasn’t a fan of…anything really. The heroine cried too much, the other characters were just meh and I wasn’t all that interested in continuing so I quit. Can’t win them all, I guess.

Week in Review (76)

Posted January 23, 2018 by Rowena in Books, Features | 0 Comments

It’s been a pretty hectic past couple of weeks for me so the blog has taken a back seat (are you guys surprised)? I haven’t really been able to get into a rhythm on my blog hops, commenting and just out and out blogging. I’m trying but I’m not as successful as I hoped I would be. I’m working on it though, I promise. As for what I’ve been up to lately, basketball. Luke’s basketball season has started so on top of both Meghan and then Brenna and Kenna’s basketball schedules, I’ve added Luke’s to that too. So my weekends are weeknights are spent at the gym watching my kids play basketball. So far, everyone is playing well. Meghan couldn’t hit the side of a barn last week but she contributes in other ways when her shot isn’t falling. Brenna has found her shot and is shooting a lot more confidently these days and I’m glad for her. Makenna is just good. Like Meghan, she contributes in different ways every game and she’s always fun to watch but my favorite so far is Luke. Luke is in his third season of basketball right now and he’s got so much confidence going into this season. He handles the ball well and he’s shooting a lot more and he’s going up for boards too. You can tell he’s going to have the very best parts of both of his sister’s game and I just know that he’s going to be fun to watch for many, many years to come. I can’t wait! Too bad his team sucks and they’re 0-2. First week, Luke’s team didn’t score any buckets so the score was like 25-0 and then last week, the final score was 2-15. We’re getting better and better every week. Yay. Now…on to the books.

BRYNN

At thirty-four, I’m reeling from a divorce. I don’t want to party or try to move on. I just want to stay home and post a new recipe on my blog: Brynn’s Dips and Balls.

But my friends aren’t having it. Get out there again, they say. It will be fun, they say. I’m still taking a hard pass.

Free designer cocktails, they say. And that’s a game-changer.

Too bad my ex shows up with his new arm candy. That’s when I lose my mind. But when my besties dare me to leap on the first single man I see, they don't expect me to actually go through with it.

TOM

All I need right now is some peace and quiet while my home renovation TV show is on hiatus. But when a curvy woman in a red wrap dress charges me like she’s a gymnast about to mount my high bar, all I can do is brace myself and catch her. What follows is the hottest experience of my adult life.

I want a repeat, but my flying Cinderella disappears immediately afterward. She doesn’t leave a glass slipper, either—just a pair of panties with chocolate bunnies printed on them.

But I will find her.

This book has been on my kindle for a couple of months now and I kept meaning to read it but never got around to it. I’m so glad to finally be jumping in. I’ll be starting this today on my lunch break and I’m stoked.

What I Read

Lee | 2 out of 5 The Trouble with True Love (Dear Lady Truelove #2) by Laura Lee Guhrke | 4.25 out of 5
My favorite reads of the last couple of weeks are Beyond Scandal & Desire by Lorraine Heath, Breaking the Ice by Julie Cross and The Trouble with True Love by Laura Lee Guhrke. All of those books are such enjoyable reads with fantastic characters and stories that you won’t be able to help yourself from falling in love with. So much goodness between those three books. My least favorite read is Love Between Enemies by Molly E. Lee. The female protagonist in that book pissed me off from beginning to end and I wanted to strangle her for what she thought was okay and all of the shit that she pulled in this book. From accepting a scholarship that she didn’t need in the first place to her revenge plan. Ugh. Just freaking ugh.

Week in Review (75)

Posted January 8, 2018 by Rowena in Books, Features | 2 Comments

First week of the new year is done and as I look forward to the second one, I’ve got loads on my mind. My family, reflecting on my life and everything and everyone in it. Am I doing all that I can to live my best life? Nope. Can I do more for the people in my life? Yep. I’ve been feeling anxious ever since my Dad had his heart attack and was in the hospital. I need to dig myself out of this mood that I’ve been in so that I’m not taking so many L’s so early in the year. We’ll see if reading can put me in a better frame of mind to tackle this week. Wish me luck. Chloe and Baby Caiden left us on Saturday and that made me so sad but look at a cute picture of Caiden that I stole off of Chloe’s Snapchat. I miss him. 🙁

Week in Review (74)

Posted January 2, 2018 by Rowena in Books, Features | 6 Comments

Wow, it’s been a crazy last couple of weeks for me, personally. My Dad was in the hospital, had emergency heart surgery and got out Christmas afternoon so we were home in time to have Christmas dinner with the family. It’s been a whirlwind of activity since then with family in town for my Dad and the holidays but I’m back at work and am catching up on everything that I missed while I was away. I didn’t read a lot since my mind couldn’t settle down enough for me to process what was happening in books so I didn’t even bother. I did watch some Hallmark movies and start some shows but I can’t remember what I watched. I also still decorated my planner so there was that.

Weekly Planner Spread

What I’m Currently Reading

Man Candy (Real Love #3) by Jessica Lemmon Also in this Series: Eye Candy, Man Candy Publisher: Random House, Loveswept Genres: Contemporary, Romance Pages: 213 Format: eARC Source: NetGalley Release Date: January 9th, 2018
Dax: After spending the summer buried up to my eyeballs in my family’s affairs, I’m ready for a break. The kind of break where I can spend two solid weeks camping and fishing in the company of absolutely no one. Then I find myself directly in the path of a drop-dead gorgeous tornado by the name of Becca Stone. Who can resist a night with a damsel in distress? Especially when she happens to be a leggy blonde? The last thing I expect is for Becca to show up on my cabin doorstep the next night, shivering in the rain and ready for seconds. Becca: One minute I’m admiring the rock-hard jaw of the Magic Mike lookalike who walks into my bar, and the next I’m getting fired by my own brother. Loudly. In front of everyone. Luckily Dax Vaughn is a gentleman who aims his white-hot smile at me. Oh, it’s on. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am. Then a torrential storm washes out the main road and causes a massive power outage, giving us two whole weeks to enjoy each other’s company. At which point Dax will go back home, leaving “us” in the rearview mirror. That’s the plan. Or it was . . . until I started falling for him.
My first read of 2018 is Man Candy by Jessica Lemmon and so far, I’m really digging it. Dax and Becca have crazy chemistry and I can feel it my damn self. Kudos on that, Jessica Lemmon. I can’t wait to dig into this book some more. Lunch break, here I come.

What I Read

Complicated by Kristen Ashley | 4 out of 5
I only read one book last week because of the reasons I mentioned above but I did enjoy Complicated. Hix and Greta were great characters with complicated lives but their support of one another and their loved ones made for a sweet romance that I ate right up…though in true Kristen Ashley form, it was still long as hell.
