The Weekly Recap (149)

Posted August 10, 2020 by Rowena in Features | 2 Comments

I’m really late with this update but it’s been a pretty weird last week so it couldn’t be helped. But better late, than never right? I hope everyone is okay and that you guys are enjoying your weeks. I’m still not reading but I’m powering through these k dramas. I think I have a problem guys. I don’t actually see it as a problem since I’m really loving the heck out of all of these dramas. So let’s get to the last couple of weeks in what I’ve been watching.

What I’m Currently Watching

Dr. Romantic

Starring: Han Suk Kyu, Yoo Yeon Seok, Seo Hyun Jin, Kim Min Jae, Jin Kyung, Im Won Hee, Kim Hong Fa, Jang Hyuk Jin, Lee Young E, Byun Woo Min, Yang Se Jong, Choi Jin Ho, Kim Jung Young
Year Released: 2016
Genre: Medical Drama, Romance

As an emotionally charged, uplifting medical drama, “Dr. Romantic” probes into seemingly cliched values regarding what makes a meaningful life. The story centers around a once-famous surgeon at the top of his field who suddenly retired to a secluded, countryside hospital. Those who cross his path learn about the values of life and comforts of love.

So recently, I watched Abyss on Netflix and came across Ahn Yeo Seop. I really liked his character, Cha Min, and thought he did a great job portraying him. So while I was browsing for a new show to watch, I came across Dr. Romantic 2, which he stars in. I’m interested in watching that show but first, I thought I’d get to know the world that Dr. Romantic 2 is about so I started this one. I ain’t gonna lie, I wanted to beat the shit out of the two main leads (Kang Dong Joo and Yoon Seo Joeng) in the early days of the show but they’re coming around. I’m really, really liking their character growth and I’m really enjoying the main character, Boo Young Joo. He’s the best doctor ever!

The Weekly Recap (148)

Posted July 27, 2020 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

This week has been one heck of a week. Exactly one week from finding out that my cousin’s husband died from COVID-19 and that my cousin herself was recovering from COVID-19, we found out that my best friend’s uncle died from COVID-19 too. That’s three cases that are near and dear to me. This shit is real, no matter how much the naysayers say it isn’t. It’s really frustrating to me to see all of these Facebook posts about COVID-19 being a hoax and we shouldn’t be forced to wear masks out in public because when the hell did all of these guys become doctors and nurses? Where did they get their medical degree from? Wear a damn mask or stay your ass home. Pick one.

My nephew Chase turned 18 on Saturday and poor thing, nobody was here to celebrate his becoming an adult with him. Just all of us old folks. So his birthday green wall were with his family but none of his buddies in his family were here. They’re all in Colorado and Utah. He’s trying real hard to get himself to Utah but unfortunately for him, it looks like he won’t be going up until we all leave for our family vacation in two weeks. Still, happiest of birthdays to Chase. He’s one of the good ones and he finished his Eagle Scout project so he’s officially an Eagle Scout. All of the blankets were finished and delivered and his Scout book is complete so he can move to Utah for school with the knowledge that he wrapped everything up here in California.

That’s about it on the personal front so let’s get into what I’ve gotten into this week…

What I’m Currently Watching

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay
Abyss

I was a bit busier this weekend than I normally am, so I still haven’t watched this weeks episodes of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay though I will be taking care of that today. I’m probably watching it when this post goes live and after last week’s episodes, I’m super anxious to get them watched. This show is so stinkin’ good.

I will also be starting Abyss today too. My girl Strong Woman Do Bong Soon is in this show and I’m low key interested because I’ve been seeing such great reviews of this show so I’m going to start it after I finish this week’s eps of It’s Okay to Be Okay. Wish me luck.

What I Watched

Suits | 4.5 out of 5
Be With You | 4.25 out of 5
W | 4.5 out of 5
Touch Your Heart | 3.5 out of 5

My favorite watch of the week goes to Suits. Even though I watched the American Suits from beginning to end and the Korean Suits was a remake of it, I still really enjoyed the slight differences that the Korean Suits made. I liked the American Harvey and Donna but Korean Mike Ross was the bomb. He absolutely made this show so much better than I was expecting. His Rachel was pretty awesome too. What surprised me with Korean Suits was how much more invested I was in the everyday business of the show. The romances were pretty much background noise to everything else going on but the main romance that we got was super sweet and though it ended on a hopeful note, I still appreciated having it included in the show. Korean Mike and Rachel were a great couple!

My least favorite watch of the week is one that I enjoyed but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the others that I watched. It was a bit on the cheesy side and the female lead was super extra and ditzy and I rolled my eyes so many different times throughout the entire season. That show is Touch Your Heart. I watched this show because I really enjoyed both of the main leads secondary romance in Goblin so I was happy to see them in their own show, front and center. Like I said, this was good just not as good as the others.

The Weekly Recap (147)

Posted July 20, 2020 by Rowena in Features | 6 Comments

The Weekly Recap is a weekly feature on the blog where I recap my week in books, in movies, and in TV Shows. If you’re ever curious about what I’ve been up to, these are the posts for you.

It’s been a pretty quiet week for me since Brenna’s been in Colorado for the summer and I don’t have anyone annoying me at every turn. It’s been nice. LOL. I also had some time to catch up with my siblings on Friday with my sister from Vegas in town. We received some bad news about my cousin’s husband, who died from covid-19 this week so that was a bummer. It’s amazing to me that people are pissed about having to wear masks in public here in California. SMH.

Anyway, I didn’t do much but watch Korean Dramas this week but it was still a good week.

Crazy Rich Asians meets Gossip Girl by way of Jenny Han in this knock-out debut about a Korean American teen who is thrust into the competitive, technicolor world of K-pop, from Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of one of the most influential K-pop girl groups of all time, Girls Generation.
What would you give for a chance to live your dreams?

For seventeen-year-old Korean American Rachel Kim, the answer is almost everything. Six years ago, she was recruited by DB Entertainment—one of Seoul’s largest K-pop labels, known for churning out some of the world’s most popular stars. The rules are simple: Train 24/7. Be perfect. Don’t date. Easy right?

Not so much. As the dark scandals of an industry bent on controlling and commodifying beautiful girls begin to bubble up, Rachel wonders if she’s strong enough to be a winner, or if she’ll end up crushed… Especially when she begins to develop feelings for K-pop star and DB golden boy Jason Lee. It’s not just that he’s charming, sexy, and ridiculously talented. He’s also the first person who really understands how badly she wants her star to rise.

Get ready as Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of Korea’s most famous girl group, Girls Generation, takes us inside the luxe, hyper-color world of K-pop, where the stakes are high, but for one girl, the cost of success—and love—might be even higher. It’s time for the world to see: this is what it takes to SHINE.

I didn’t get any reading done this week. A couple of pages at most but I’m liking what I’m reading so far in Shine by Jessica Jung. Those K Pop stars are no joke and their schedules and training are intense. I’m really interested in seeing where this story takes us. I just need to make time to read.

Rent a Boyfriend by Gloria Chao

What I’m Currently Watching

It’s Okay to Not be Okay (2020)
Suits (2018)

This week’s episodes of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay were emotionally packed and I ugly cried through both of them. I am really, really loving this show and both Seo Ye Ji and Kim Soo Hyun did such an amazing job engaging my emotions with their acting skills that I am so here for the both of them. I cannot wait to see where the rest of the season takes us but if the first part of the season is any indication, it’s going to be a crazy ride that I am fully on board with.

I started the Korean version of Suits last night and I am super duper excited about it. I adored the American version of this show and the Korean version stars my #3 boo thang, Park Hyun Sik. I completely adored him in Strong Woman, Do Bong Soon and Juror 8 so when I saw that he was on the Korean version of Suits, I knew that I had to find the show and watch it wherever I could. I’m so glad that it’s on Netflix. I’m on episode 5 and so far, I’m really enjoying it. It’s very familiar to the American version but with its own Korean charm and I love me some Park Hyun Sik so I’m all in.

What I Watched

It’s Okay to Not be Okay (2020)
Cheese in the Trap (2016) | 2.5 out of 5
My First First Love (2019) | 4.25 out of 5
My First First Love 2 (2019) | 4.5 out of 5

This week was a good week in K Dramas for me….with the exception of Cheese in the Trap. That show started off so well for me and then it went downhill and kept right on going downhill until it ended and I was like WTF? Wasn’t a big fan of that of that one.

I did really enjoy My First First Love and My First First Love 2. I need to watch more shows and movies with Ji Soo in it. He’s such a delight.

The Weekly Recap (146)

Posted July 13, 2020 by Rowena in Features | 13 Comments

Hey everyone! Long time, no chat. I’m sorry I up and disappeared and that I seem to keep doing that on the regular. You’d think that since I ain’t going nowhere thanks to this ‘Rona that I’d have all the time in the world to blog and to read and to do all of the things but I’ve sunk into the hole of Korean Dramas and that’s about all I’ve been doing. I’m watching a lot more than I’m reading right now but I’m working on trying to find a balance so that I can, you know, do all of the things.

Things might look a little different around here but I thought a little makeover was long overdue. I also thought that changing the look up might motivate me to start writing again and…it worked! With this new look and a little change of direction, I’m pumped to start blogging again. Now, I know that you guys are here for the book content but I’m thinking of going back to a more personal blog so that I can write about more than just what I’m reading.

So, Welcome Back! Pull up a seat, grab a beer, and let’s catch up, shall we? I missed y’all!

The Weekly Recap (146)Magic Binds

Series: Kate Daniels #9
Published by Penguin, Ace on September 20, 2016
Genres: Urban Fantasy
Point of View:First Person
Pages: 333
Format: eBook
Source: Purchased
Add It: Goodreads

The new, “heart-stopping”* novel in the New York Times bestselling series that “defines urban fantasy.”

Mercenary Kate Daniels knows all too well that magic in post-shift Atlanta is a dangerous business. But nothing she’s faced could have prepared her for this…
Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of their walk to the altar…

Kate’s father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in his never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.

The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…

After taking almost two months off from reading, I’m back at it again and I’m about a third of the way into this book. I need to finish this series before I jump into any other new to me books because I tried to read a few contemporaries before this one and I couldn’t finish any of them. You know its bad when I tried reading a Lauren Layne book and my attention was all over the place. I couldn’t buckle down long enough to finish the book so I gave up not too far into the story. I blame Kate Daniels. I just need to see where my friends end up after the last book and hopefully, it’s somewhere nice and tidy. So far, this one is good so I’m glad to be back with all of my homies…especially Curran and Kate. So I’m looking forward to finishing this one.

What I Read

Blind Date with a Book Boyfriend by Lucy Eden | 4 out of 5

I finally read a book, y’all! I haven’t read anything since the end of May and though I’ve been trying, nothing has been holding my attention but after chatting on Zoom with my book girlfriends, I picked this one up (at their recommendation) and I’m super glad that I did. It was too cute and super short so just what I needed to kick my ass in gear and start reading again. Thanks Ames and Holly!

What I Got

Blind Date with a Book Boyfriend by Lucy Eden
The Bridge Kingdom (The Bridge Kingdom #1) by Danielle L. Jensen
My Truth by Don Benjamin
The One by John Marrs

What I’m Currently Watching

It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (2020)
Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth (2016)

I debated with myself on if I wanted to start Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth right now because I’m running out of Park Seo Joon shows and movies to watch. He is my number one boo thang right now and I want to savor everything of his that I still have left.

What I Watched

Strong Woman, Do Bong Soon (2017) | 4.5 out of 5
Weightlifting Fairy, Kim Bok Joo (2016) | 4.5 out of 5
Juror 8 (2019) | 4 out of 5
It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (2020) | 4 out of 5
The K2 (2016) | 3.5 out of 5

My favorite watch of the week is a tie between Strong Woman, Do Bong Soon and Weightlifting Fairy, Kim Bok Joo. Both dramas were kind of similar in the sense that both heroines were physically strong and the love triangle is different in Weightlifting Fairy but I hella loved both of these shows. I enjoyed the romance, the stories, and just everything about both of them. I’ve already made a list of shows and movies that my favorite actors/actresses from both shows are in because I want to see more of them.

My least favorite show from this week goes to The K2. I was looking for a different speed than the other shows I watched and I’ve been hearing such great things about this show so I started it up. It’s on Netflix, the main male lead is FOINE so I thought, why not? While it was interesting and I did like it overall, the beginning was a bit slow and I struggled to connect with both of the main leads for a bit. Still, not bad just not my favorite.
