The Monthly Recap: October 2022

Posted November 1, 2022 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

The Monthly Recap posts are a way for me to take a look back and reflect on my previous month in Korean dramas. I always lose track of what I want to watch and I need these posts to keep me honest with my damn self because I be forgetting shit. So let’s start this recap, shall we?

I can’t believe that we’re already entering into the last two months of the year and that a month has passed since my last Monthly Recap. Time is moving way too fast and I’m not sure I’m ready for the new year. I have loads of plans and shit to do but am I ready to tackle all of it? Not really. The show must go on though so I’ll be moving forward with this post, at the very least.

October was a lot busier than I thought it would, especially with how busy September was. I traveled to Utah and then on to California for different things. I had a lot of fun but was more than ready for a break from the hustle and bustle that is my family life. I did manage to get some k-drama watching in so that’s a good thing. Let’s take a look back on what I watched, what worked, and what didn’t work for me. Shall we?

Monthly Stats

Dramas Watched: 9 | Dramas Dropped: 1 | Dramas Still Watching: 6
Dramas Reviewed: 4 | Boyfriend of the Month: Choi Do Il from Little Women
Favorite Drama: Little Women | Least Favorite Drama: The Cursed

Dramas I Completed

Little Women | 4 out of 5
Young Actor’s Retreat | 5 out of 5
The Law Cafe | 4 out of 5

This was a solid month in my k-drama watching. Out of the three shows that I completed, my favorite of the bunch was definitely Little Women. My least favorite is the one drama that I couldn’t even finish.

Dramas I Dropped

The Cursed | 1.5 out of 5

Therese and I tried to get into this show but it was too confusing, the story was just meh and it was hard to connect with the characters so we got to episode 5 and called it quits. I was surprised that we only got to episode 5 because I thought we were watching for days and were a lot farther into the show but nope…it was that boring for the both of us. Oh well.

Dramas I’m Still Watching

Blind
Love in Contract
Bad Prosecutor

Gaus Electronics
Love is for Suckers
May I Help You?

Dramas I Reviewed

The Sound of Magic | 3.5 out of 5
My Liberation Notes | 4.5 out of 5
Military Prosecutor Doberman | 3.5 out of 5
Our Blues | 4.5 out of 5

Actors that Stood Out

Jung Eun Ji in Blind

I’m really enjoying this drama and I’m sad that it’s wrapping up next week BUT as much as I’m enjoying the main three leads, I’m enjoying Jung Eun Ji’s character the most. She’s always looking on the bright side of things and always doing her best to do what’s right. I like her acting so I’m looking forward to checking her out in whatever else she’s got going on.

Kwak Dong Yeon from Gaus Electronics

I love me some Kwak Dong Yeon but I especially love him in this drama. I didn’t think that I could love one of his characters more than I loved Jerry from Big Mouth but I hella love Lee Sang Sik. I love how unlucky he is and how optimistic he is even when things are stacked against him. He treats everyday as a day to do better than yesterday and I just love him sincerity so he stayed with me throughout the month.

Go Kyung Pyo in Love in Contract

I’ve seen Go Kyung Pyo in a lot of different things and I’ve enjoyed him in everything he’s been in but it wasn’t until this show and this character that I’ve really paid attention to him. I really like him as Jung Ji Ho and seeing him bring this character to life every week has been a delight. I’m buying everything he’s selling and seeing his character learn to fall in love and be in love has been great. He’s been great.

The Monthly Recap: September 2021

Posted October 5, 2021 by Rowena in Features | 2 Comments

The Monthly Recap posts are a way for me to take a look back and reflect on my previous month in books, movies, and Korean dramas. From what I read, what I watched, what I got, and the books, shows, and movies that I need to get to. I always lose track of what I have, what I need to read, what I want to watch and I need these posts to keep me honest with my damn self because I be forgetting shit.

I came home from a trip to Colorado for my nephew’s birthday on September 1st. I was wrapping up my time with my family and though it was a pretty crazy week away from work, I still had a really good time seeing and catching up with the family.

Monthly Stats

Dramas Watched: 12 | Dramas Completed: 4
Dramas DNF’d: 1 | K-Drama Boyfriend of the Month: Hong Du Sik
Favorite Drama: Squid Games | Least Favorite Drama: Uncontrollaby Fond

Ongoing Dramas I Watched

Police University
The Great Shaman Ga Doo Shim
Hometown Cha Cha
Lovers of the Red Sky
Lost
Yumi’s Cells
Dali and the Cocky Prince

September was the month that I started watching a lot of new K-dramas. I’ve never watched so many k-dramas at one time. I thought I’d be a lot more confused but I’m not having any trouble at all keeping stories and characters straight from each drama so needless to say, I’m enjoying each drama that I’m watching. My favorite of the bunch is probably Lovers of the Red Sky, followed closely by Hometown Cha Cha, but Yumi’s Cells ain’t no slouch either. There’s a lot of good stuff here and I’m sad that some of them will be ending in the next couple of weeks.

Dramas I Completed

Uncontrollably Fond | 2.75 out of 5
D.P. | 4.25 out of 5
Tomorrow with You | 3 out of 5
Squid Games | 4.25 out of 5

Of the dramas that I did finish, my favorite leans just a smidge toward Squid Games since I watched that so quickly because I couldn’t stop. It’s not #1 in every single country that streams Netflix for nothing. That show was good and though there were things that I rolled my eyes at, I still really enjoyed it. Same with D.P. I ended up liking that show a lot more than I thought I would. The stories, the characters, all of them made my heart hurt and I always love seeing Jung Hae In acting in anything. I love that guy!

Dramas I DNF’d

Search

I thought that I was in the mood for something suspenseful so I loaded this bad boy right up but about two episodes in, I turned it off. I’m not sure what my issue was but as it turns out, I wasn’t in the mood to slog through something as deep and dark as this show turned out to be so for now, I’m DNF-ing it.

What Movies I Watched

Twenty | 5 out of 5

I saw that Kim Woobin and Kang Haneul was in this one so I had to watch it. I’m SO glad that I did because I laughed my ass off from beginning to end. I’m not sure which friend ended up being my favorite of the trio because I loved them all. This movie is my Midnight Runners from last year. Five stars all the way, it was such an enjoyable movie.

The Monthly Recap: May 2021

Posted June 8, 2021 by Rowena in Features | 12 Comments

The Monthly Recap posts are a way for me to take a look back and reflect on my previous month in books, movies, and Korean dramas. From what I read, what I watched, what I got, and the books, shows, and movies that I need to get to. I always lose track of what I have, what I need to read, what I want to watch and I need these posts to keep me honest with my damn self because I be forgetting shit.

My sister in Colorado came out to Vegas for a week in May for her son’s volleyball tournament so I was able to hang with her and attend my nephew’s volleyball games. Games that I normally would have watched on Facebook Watch so it was good to see Kainoa in action. He played well and even though he got beaned in the face so hard that it knocked him off his feet, he survived and is alive to tell the tale so alls well on that end. Helen came with her daughter, Genna and I spent most of that week with Genna. Helen stayed at the hotel and attended team dinners and what not but not Genna. Genna stayed with me the entire time that she was here. She’s almost 12 years old and we fought like sisters and made up like only sisters could but the best thing about us being together for that entire week was Genna is hella Army now.

So Kainoa had three games each day of the tournament. To keep Genna busy (she gets bored easily and didn’t really want to go to the games), we listened to music on my phone. We switched off picking the songs that we listened to so she would listen to a song and I would listen to a song. Every single song that I chose was a BTS song. On Friday, all of Genna’s songs were by Olivia Rodrigo, Shawn Mendes, and Ariana Grande. By Sunday, all of her songs were BTS songs. She spent a lot of time over the weekend, watching the easy lyrics videos to learn the songs herself. Her favorite songs are Save Me, Anpanman, and Butter. She was here when Butter debuted and we had a successful comeback weekend. I knew I raised my little Army right because, by the end of the weekend, she knew how to stream Butter correctly to make sure that her streams counted toward the chart numbers. I was so proud. LOL.

She fell completely down the BTS rabbit hole too. Not only was she listening to BTS music, but she was also watching BTS music videos, Run BTS episodes, the funny compilation videos on YouTube, and she chose a bias as well. It was funny because she woke up one morning and came to my room, turned on the Butter video on my TV and said, “Aunty Wena, I found my bias. It’s JK. I just really like him.” I was so happy that I sent her home with some BTS posters, a promise to help her build up her own BTS merch shelf and everything. Seriously, I was so proud.

Here’s what my month in May looked like…
