The Monthly Recap: October 2022

Posted November 1, 2022 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

The Monthly Recap posts are a way for me to take a look back and reflect on my previous month in Korean dramas. I always lose track of what I want to watch and I need these posts to keep me honest with my damn self because I be forgetting shit. So let’s start this recap, shall we?

I can’t believe that we’re already entering into the last two months of the year and that a month has passed since my last Monthly Recap. Time is moving way too fast and I’m not sure I’m ready for the new year. I have loads of plans and shit to do but am I ready to tackle all of it? Not really. The show must go on though so I’ll be moving forward with this post, at the very least.

October was a lot busier than I thought it would, especially with how busy September was. I traveled to Utah and then on to California for different things. I had a lot of fun but was more than ready for a break from the hustle and bustle that is my family life. I did manage to get some k-drama watching in so that’s a good thing. Let’s take a look back on what I watched, what worked, and what didn’t work for me. Shall we?

Monthly Stats

Dramas Watched: 9 | Dramas Dropped: 1 | Dramas Still Watching: 6
Dramas Reviewed: 4 | Boyfriend of the Month: Choi Do Il from Little Women
Favorite Drama: Little Women | Least Favorite Drama: The Cursed

Dramas I Completed

Little Women | 4 out of 5
Young Actor’s Retreat | 5 out of 5
The Law Cafe | 4 out of 5

This was a solid month in my k-drama watching. Out of the three shows that I completed, my favorite of the bunch was definitely Little Women. My least favorite is the one drama that I couldn’t even finish.

Dramas I Dropped

The Cursed | 1.5 out of 5

Therese and I tried to get into this show but it was too confusing, the story was just meh and it was hard to connect with the characters so we got to episode 5 and called it quits. I was surprised that we only got to episode 5 because I thought we were watching for days and were a lot farther into the show but nope…it was that boring for the both of us. Oh well.

Dramas I’m Still Watching

Blind
Love in Contract
Bad Prosecutor

Gaus Electronics
Love is for Suckers
May I Help You?

Dramas I Reviewed

The Sound of Magic | 3.5 out of 5
My Liberation Notes | 4.5 out of 5
Military Prosecutor Doberman | 3.5 out of 5
Our Blues | 4.5 out of 5

Actors that Stood Out

Jung Eun Ji in Blind

I’m really enjoying this drama and I’m sad that it’s wrapping up next week BUT as much as I’m enjoying the main three leads, I’m enjoying Jung Eun Ji’s character the most. She’s always looking on the bright side of things and always doing her best to do what’s right. I like her acting so I’m looking forward to checking her out in whatever else she’s got going on.

Kwak Dong Yeon from Gaus Electronics

I love me some Kwak Dong Yeon but I especially love him in this drama. I didn’t think that I could love one of his characters more than I loved Jerry from Big Mouth but I hella love Lee Sang Sik. I love how unlucky he is and how optimistic he is even when things are stacked against him. He treats everyday as a day to do better than yesterday and I just love him sincerity so he stayed with me throughout the month.

Go Kyung Pyo in Love in Contract

I’ve seen Go Kyung Pyo in a lot of different things and I’ve enjoyed him in everything he’s been in but it wasn’t until this show and this character that I’ve really paid attention to him. I really like him as Jung Ji Ho and seeing him bring this character to life every week has been a delight. I’m buying everything he’s selling and seeing his character learn to fall in love and be in love has been great. He’s been great.

The Monthly Recap: September 2022

Posted October 4, 2022 by Rowena in Features | 0 Comments

The Monthly Recap posts are a way for me to take a look back and reflect on my previous month in Korean dramas. I always lose track of what I want to watch and I need these posts to keep me honest with my damn self because I be forgetting shit.

September was a busy month for me. I was traveling between home and Utah and then I traveled to Hawaii for my nephew’s wedding. I spent an entire week in Hawaii and just lived my best life. I had a lot of fun with my family but was ready to go home and get back to work after a week. My heart was full being able to spend time with my Dad, my sisters, my daughter, and the rest of my family in paradise. So because of all the traveling and family time, my k-drama watching suffered though I did my best to keep up with everything because I didn’t want to be too far behind schedule after I returned home.

So let’s start this recap, shall we?

Monthly Stats

Dramas Watched: 7 | Dramas Dropped: 0
Dramas Reviewed: 2 | Dramas that Started:
Favorite Drama: Big Mouth | Least Favorite Drama: Once Upon a Smalltown

Dramas I Completed

Bulgasal: Immortal Souls | 3 out of 5
Big Mouth | 4 out of 5
Once Upon a Smalltown | 2 out of 5
If You Wish Upon Me | 4 out of 5

Of the dramas that I completed in September, my favorite of the bunch is probably Big Mouth. A lot of people didn’t like how that show ended but I wasn’t mad about it. I could see that ending coming a mile away so I guess I was prepared when it finally came about. Overall, that drama was just the bomb and I was hooked from beginning to end. My least favorite of the month goes to Once Upon a Smalltown. That show dragged for me and didn’t really pick up throughout the entirety of the show. I watched for the male lead and while I enjoyed seeing him every week, this wasn’t my favorite of his characters.

Dramas I Dropped

I didn’t drop any of the dramas that I watched in September though for a time or two, I really thought about dropping Once Upon a Smalltown.

Dramas I Reviewed

The Monthly Recap: August 2022

Posted September 6, 2022 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

The Monthly Recap posts are a way for me to take a look back and reflect on my previous month in Korean dramas. I always lose track of what I want to watch and I need these posts to keep me honest with my damn self because I be forgetting shit. So let’s start this recap, shall we?

August was the month that my best friend and I started watching k-dramas together (everyone cheer for Therese) and having someone in my IRL to obsessive over with is the best. I used to only have this blog where I would discuss all of this shit with myself but having Therese on this journey with me has been so much fun. We’ve already chosen our next k-drama buddy watch and I’m looking forward to it so much.

Monthly Stats

Dramas Watched: 8 | Dramas Dropped: 1
Dramas Reviewed: 0 | Boyfriend of the Month: Jang Uk & Lee Jun Ho
Favorite Drama: Alchemy of Souls, Extraordinary Attorney Woo | Least Favorite Drama: Today’s Webtoon

Dramas I Started (and are On Going)

Big Mouth
Bulgasal: Immortal Souls

I started these dramas last month and I’ll be finishing them up this month. I’m really enjoying both shows. Lots of thrilling and suspenseful stuff going on in both of them and the episodes of Big Mouth can’t release fast enough for me. I’m watching Bulgasal: Immortal Souls with my best friend and we’re savoring that show so we’re watching like 3 episodes a night so we’ll be finishing that one up soon. So much goodness!

Dramas I Completed

In the Soop: Friendcation | 5 out of 5
Extraordinary Attorney Woo | 4.5 out 5
Hotel Del Luna | 4.5 out of 5
Alchemy of Souls | 4.5 out of 5
Doctor Lawyer | 4 out of 5

These are the shows that I completed last month and there was a whole lot of quality dramas in the bunch. I enjoyed everything that I watched so it’s hard to choose a favorite. Ratings wise, my favorite would be In the Soop: Friendcation but that was only 4 episodes of us following Wooga Squad around while they did different activities. Of the dramas that I watched, even though these three got the same rating, my favorite of the three goes as follows: Alchemy of Souls, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and then Hotel Del Luna. All quality dramas but everything about Alchemy of Souls is still with me and the show has been over for a week. I’m still not over everything and I’m on pins and needles waiting for December to come so that we can finish this story up.

I wouldn’t say that Doctor Lawyer is my least favorite show of the month since I really enjoyed it and So Ji Sub is too damn fine. I just enjoyed the other dramas a smidge more.

Dramas I Dropped

Today’s Webtoon

I’m not sure what it was about this show but I just couldn’t connect with the story, the characters, and I’m not sure if it was too light for the mood that I was in last month but for whatever reason, I quit this show about 5 episodes in. That’s a bummer since I was really looking forward to this one. Oh well.

Actors that Stood Out

Each month, different dramas will introduce new to me actors and these are the three actors that jumped to the very top of my radar. I’ll be checking out more of their stuff and will definitely be supporting their acting projects from here on out.

Lee Jae Wook from Alchemy of Souls

Therese and I fell head over heels in love with Jang Uk from Alchemy of Souls and we could not sing enough praises for Lee Jae Wook’s portrayal of him. We spent quite a bit of time being all googly eyed over him and discussing every minute detail of his drama, his character, and simping over him in general. He made August a very fun month in dramas for us.

Kang Tae Oh from Extraordinary Attorney Woo

Kang Tae Oh was another August highlight for me in my drama watching. I absolutely adored him as Lee Jun Ho in Extraordinary Attorney Woo and was a puddle of swoon for him each and every single week. I’m kind of bummed that he hasn’t been in that many projects as the lead actor but I still made a list of all of his older stuff and will be watching them for sure. I’m also bummed that he enlists for the military this month so he’ll be out of action for the next year or two. Gah, I just discovered him! *sad girl*

Lee Jin Wook from Bulgasal: Immortal Souls

I lost count of how many times my eyes fell on the floor and I exclaimed, “Gawddamn, he’s fine” while watching him in Bulsagal. Therese is probably tired of my lustful commentary while we’re trying to figure out who the hell else are monsters and cringing at all the gore and blood. I’m very invested in this drama and I’m starting to wonder if he’s the biggest reason why. Haha. He’s got a big back list so I’ll definitely be checking out more of his stuff. Him and his fine ass.

All in all, August was a solid month of dramas for me. I enjoyed all but one of the dramas that I watched and September is shaping up to be a solid month is new releases so I’m already looking forward to so many releases. I’ve got my fingers crossed that I’ll enjoy all of the new dramas that I’m planning on watching. Wish me luck!

The Monthly Recap: September 2021

Posted October 5, 2021 by Rowena in Features | 2 Comments

The Monthly Recap posts are a way for me to take a look back and reflect on my previous month in books, movies, and Korean dramas. From what I read, what I watched, what I got, and the books, shows, and movies that I need to get to. I always lose track of what I have, what I need to read, what I want to watch and I need these posts to keep me honest with my damn self because I be forgetting shit.

I came home from a trip to Colorado for my nephew’s birthday on September 1st. I was wrapping up my time with my family and though it was a pretty crazy week away from work, I still had a really good time seeing and catching up with the family.

Ongoing Dramas I Watched

Police University
The Great Shaman Ga Doo Shim
Hometown Cha Cha
Lovers of the Red Sky
Lost
Yumi’s Cells
Dali and the Cocky Prince

September was the month that I started watching a lot of new K-dramas. I’ve never watched so many k-dramas at one time. I thought I’d be a lot more confused but I’m not having any trouble at all keeping stories and characters straight from each drama so needless to say, I’m enjoying each drama that I’m watching. My favorite of the bunch is probably Lovers of the Red Sky, followed closely by Hometown Cha Cha, but Yumi’s Cells ain’t no slouch either. There’s a lot of good stuff here and I’m sad that some of them will be ending in the next couple of weeks.

Dramas I Completed

Uncontrollably Fond | 2.75 out of 5
D.P. | 4.25 out of 5
Tomorrow with You | 3 out of 5
Squid Games | 4.25 out of 5

Of the dramas that I did finish, my favorite leans just a smidge toward Squid Games since I watched that so quickly because I couldn’t stop. It’s not #1 in every single country that streams Netflix for nothing. That show was good and though there were things that I rolled my eyes at, I still really enjoyed it. Same with D.P. I ended up liking that show a lot more than I thought I would. The stories, the characters, all of them made my heart hurt and I always love seeing Jung Hae In acting in anything. I love that guy!

Dramas I DNF’d

Search

I thought that I was in the mood for something suspenseful so I loaded this bad boy right up but about two episodes in, I turned it off. I’m not sure what my issue was but as it turns out, I wasn’t in the mood to slog through something as deep and dark as this show turned out to be so for now, I’m DNF-ing it.

What Movies I Watched

Twenty | 5 out of 5

I saw that Kim Woobin and Kang Haneul was in this one so I had to watch it. I’m SO glad that I did because I laughed my ass off from beginning to end. I’m not sure which friend ended up being my favorite of the trio because I loved them all. This movie is my Midnight Runners from last year. Five stars all the way, it was such an enjoyable movie.

The Monthly Recap: June 2021

Posted July 6, 2021 by Rowena in Features | 4 Comments

The Monthly Recap posts are a way for me to take a look back and reflect on my previous month in books, movies, and Korean dramas. From what I read, what I watched, what I got, and the books, shows, and movies that I need to get to. I always lose track of what I have, what I need to read, what I want to watch and I need these posts to keep me honest with my damn self because I be forgetting shit.

June was a busy month, as seems to be the norm for me these days. Brenna quit her job, interviewed to work with me at my job, and got the job so I’ve been training her since her first day. We made a long weekend trip to L.A. to see my Dad and hang out with my siblings for Father’s Day and Bren’s been here in Las Vegas with me for the last three weeks. My niece graduated from high school as well but I wasn’t able to make it out for her graduation and that bummed me out a little bit but I was able to see her and hang with her while I was in L.A. so that made me feel a little better.

I also found out that my sister is selling her house and downsizing since all of her kids have moved out so when I went out to L.A. I got to see all of the upgrades she’s done to her house and the house looks great. It’s going to be weird going to L.A. and not going to my sister’s house since that was the house that everyone congregated to. I’m sure we’ll all fill up the new place once she moves so the future is changing. Still, I’m happy for her.

I did manage to consume loads of things though so here’s a look at the month that was June, for me.

My favorite read of the month goes to Devil in Disguise by Lisa Kleypas. It was pretty much everything that I hoped it would be and I really enjoyed diving back into the The Ravenels series. It was also good to see some familiar faces from The Wallflowers series. Lots of fun. My least favorite read of the month goes to To Sir, with Love by Lauren Layne. Not because I didn’t enjoy it, I just didn’t enjoy it as much as the other books that I read.

What Movies I Watched

The Conjuring (2013) | 4 out of 5
Annabelle (2014) | 3 out of 5
The Nun (2018) | 3.25 out of 5

The Conjuring 2 (2016) | 4 out of 5
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) | 3.25 out of 5

Last month, I watched The Conjuring series with my best friend, Theresa. We made a weekend of it and though she didn’t finish (or did you, Tita?), I did. My favorite movie of the bunch would have to be The Curse of La Llorona. Sure, the characters drove me crazy but I liked the story behind everything and the characters in this movie didn’t drive me nearly as crazy as the characters in the other movies. My least favorite of the bunch goes straight to Annabelle. The movie was just okay. Sure, I jumped from time to time but for the most part, I just wasn’t that interested in what was going on. Meh.

What Dramas I Watched

Law School (2021) | 4 out of 5
Doom at Your Service (2021) | 3.5 out of 5
Nevertheless (2021) | DNF

I didn’t finish a bunch of dramas last month and that was mostly because I’m watching a bunch of shows as they’re airing instead of watching shows that have already finished. Of the shows that I finished, my favorite was Law School and my least favorite goes to the show that I didn’t even finish the second episode for, Nevertheless. I wasn’t in the mood for that so I think I’m going to skip it for now.
